2024 MLB Season Thread
Nobody wants these games to start more than Mannfred.
Shohei just spoke to the media for the first time. In a prepared statement, he said:
-He never bet on baseball, or any other sport,
-He didn't know that Ippei lied to him, and that Ippei took the money from Shohei's account to pay his gambling debts
-He'll continue to cooperate with the investigation, and play as the investigation plays out.
If all that's true, then this is probably the best possible outcome for his reputation going forward. He's a naive star athlete who trusted the wrong person. It happens.
In any event, these games are about start! Last year, just like we all predicted, "Someone Else" came on strong in the playoffs, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks for the World Series. Can that happen again?
T-Mobile is giving away a free MLB.tv subscription ($149 value) to T-Mobile subscribers starting TOMORROW (Tuesday 3/26 - April 1). Don't miss out.
So speaking of gambling, here are the current best odds for the World Series you can find, from Vegas insider!
It's absolutely worth it. Those extra outs he makes are worth way more than any imaginary plate appearance he might have later. As played, he can't even advance on the next ball Bregman hits up the middle that any normal runner advances on. That would have put them into the 1st/2nd scenario where he's a sitting duck, and it's not a "maybe" scenario: he cannot be on the field there. Roughly one third of the balls in play will be grounders that are fielded. In that case, he makes a ton of extra ou
what on this planet are you talking about. on an outfield single he goes to third and on an infield ground ball he doesn't try to advance. simple. there is no extra out he makes. you talk about meanignless advancement on the bases as though it means something.
as for the hypothetical at bat- if they tie/win the game it's almost certain he bats again. but yea take him out bc he can't advance to third on a infield ground ball lmao when if 3 runs score that means he scores anyway .lmao.
anyway good riddance Astros.
striking out with the bases loaded and one out on a pitch that hits you in the hand doesn't seem optimal.
As a casual all these pitching changes piss me off. I can't believe LOOGYs were ever allowed to exist
No surprise with Astros. They were never good.
I'm gonna pissed if there are 4 sweeps again like last year.
Tigazzzzzzzz
I'm talking baseball 101. The next ball in play was a grounder behind the pinch runner who, of course, advanced to 3B easily. Alvarez would have been tied to 2B, setting up forces at every bag. The next hit was a weak single that easily scored the runner from 3B. Alvarez would have only reached 3B, setting up a force everywhere. If you can't understand why a hobbled runner makes more outs in those spots then I can't help you. He's one of the worst base runners in MLB when healthy, but now he's out there with a crippling knee injury. His base running below average would be much more negative than usual which is saying a lot.

They score exactly three runs about 7% of the time, so Alvarez bats again even less often than that. Let's say 5%. That's nothing. His WPA over a pinch hitter is going to be fractions of a percent. The difference in base running equity dwarfs it.
if 3 runs score that means he scores anyway
Huh? It doesn't mean that at all. First and second no outs. Next play could have been a force at third (Alvarez out) followed by a three-run HR. There are tons of permutations that falsify this but one will suffice. Running for Alvarez was by far the right move and it's not close. Using Hader in G1 was more interesting.

the base running doesn't dwarf it. it's negligible at best. you get the single on the infield where he stays on second which almost never happens. and even then he's on third instead of home which means nothing unless you get the rare squibber near the plate where he'd be out but someone fast wouldn't be. the only time it makes a difference is when the only plate is at home. they're never throwing home otherwise. so basically you need 2 extremely unlikely plays to happen for it to ever matter even a little bit.
And yes I'm away it's unlikely the Astros win or even tie it down 3-0 in the 9th either way. I don't think it was some call that turned Houston from winners to losers. Baseball 101 is you don't pinch run for runs that don't matter especially for your best hitter.
Lol none of that is real but feel free to keep making stuff up. I don't have time to recreate all of this basic **** that anyone can look up on free saber sites.
Thanks Mets now there's baseball tomorrow!
No thread for Rose. The amount of monumental playoff moments in his career is sort of lost in his "Hit King" and scandal identity. Looking back, it's very dramatic, he barely made it. His second year in the bigs he sucked, didn't hit for average, had no power or speed ... and it was very shaky. Benched and job in jeopardy. Year three he started the 200 hits per year average over 18 seasons or so. He made it. He was a hyper competitor who lifted every team he played for. Yeah he was obnoxious at times. So? And he was obnoxious in his denials about gambling. So?
Game 7 of the '72 World Series. I was there. Reds trail I think 3-1, bottom of the 8th. Rose leads it off with a single. Morgan rips one down the line that has Rose diving to avoid it, the first baseman diving to catch it. No idea where the ball was. (Second epic play in the game we couldn't see the ball.) Suddenly it's in the right field corner. Rose can't score because of the dive. IBB to Bench. Loaded. Perez sac fly to right. 3-2.
Bottom of the 9th Rose makes the last out with a lash to the warning track in left, Rudi playing deep to protect against doubles. Ouch. Anyway, Rose's career was epic in so many ways. Not just the hits. Dramatic story. Hall worthy if you took away 1000 hits, 1500 hits, maybe 2000 hits.
Thanks a lot, Chris Sale.

I think it's more the age of most posters on here than anything. Most of us didn't see him play or at least didn't see him play in his prime.
The recent HBO series on him was really good.
With the Braves out, now I don’t know who to root for.
Obviously can’t root for the Mets or Phillies. Don’t really want to root for the Dodgers, despite the singular brilliance of Shohei. I guess that leaves the Padres? Eh.
I can root for the Tigazzzz or Royals in the AL.
Same boat since Rangers didn't even make the post season.
I've got a futures bet on the Phillies to win it all that pays me $680, but I can't stand them. It was simply a business decision.
My two favorite teams, Royals and Orioles, squared off so left with Royals there. Bobby Witt Jr is a pleasure to watch. Bit of a soft spot for the Brewers as well. Always like it when a small market team makes some noise in the playoffs.
With that said, and I've wished nothing but failure for these two teams my whole life... But, for the health of baseball, I wouldn't mind a Yankees/Dodgers WS. Judge vs Ohtani would be epic. As much as it pains me to post that, I'd definitely be locked in.
OMG or BUST tonight for the Mets.
It's gonna be Royals over Dodgers. There will be much crying.
Then next year they'll change the playoffs so the best regular season record gets a bye all the way to the World Series, and gets an automatic win for every five regular season wins more than their World Series opponent.
Also any hitter who also pitches starts their batting count at 1-0 and pitching count at 0-1.
It's only fair.
