Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
S.O.B. , Blake Edwards, 1980
The infamous movie where Julie Andrews goes topless! And, as Robert Preston tells her character, she's got a wonderful set of knockers.
Hadn't seen this is at least 30 years, but it's long been one of my guilty pleasures, because - while not a good movie - it is certainly a memorable one.
Richard Mulligan (SOAP) plays a movie producer whose big budget film tanks at the box office, threatening the studio (run by Robert Vaughn), and the careers of his and his movie star wife - Julie Andrews - the goody-too-shoes. star of the movie. But Mulligan has an idea - reshoot it to be the world's most expensive porno - and the audience will flock to see it!
This is an "insider Hollywood" film, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
The cast is ridiculous....besides the three mentioned above:
Larry Hagman
Shelly Winters
Loretta Switt
Stuart Margolin
Robert Loggia
Rosanna Arquette
Marissa Berenson
and many others...
But the three main stars are William Holden, Robert Preston, and Robert Webber - as Mulligan's colleagues and best friends, who try to help the producer navigate through his preposterous idea and to stop him from trying to kill himself - which he attempts 4 times.
The best part of this movie is when those 4 are together, palling around, being old men swingers who are still trying to swing and be relevant in Hollywood.
There's an extended sequence where Holden, Preston, and Webber steal a corpse out of funeral parlor that is is one of Blake Edwards' best physical comedy sequences he's ever directed. And it's actually a moving commentary on adult male friendship and love, too.
Just fantastic to see these legends playing silly like this.
That sequence is worth seeing the whole thing, even though the movie is dated, with ridiculous late 70s/early 80s wardrobe and set design.
Like I said, not a good movie...but it always puts a smile on my face.
Whatever the 80s version of USA Up All Night was, that's where that movie was played.
Massacre Mafia Style(1974)
Stuffy critics tend to bang on about how Francis Ford Coppolla's The Godfather is the greatest Mafia movie of all time. Cooler critics may opt for Marty Scorsese's Goodfellas
Clearly, they haven't seen Duke Mitchel's Massacre Mafia Style
And God I want that song for my phone.
cv, i hope you never run out of youtube clips, i thoroughly enjoy each and every one

Ditto. An inspiration to all of us.
A Coppola/Anderson Film
Love Winterbottom's movies.

Slow, meditative film about a construction worker who meets (eventually) a Japanese academic who studies moss. Both characters are on their own the first part of the film. The construction worker is about to go on a month's vacation and possibly return home for good, and the woman is shown teaching a class where students are creating imaginary plants and visiting her mother at the mother's restaurant.
When they do meet, they explore the wonders of moss. And somehow this all makes sense.
I loved it.
On Criterion.

I saw Tom Hanks/Robert Zemeckis and I was like, whaaaat.
because your descriptor was much more interesting than what 2024 Here looks like
It may not be the best, but it's magical.
Violent Panic: The Big Crash (1976)
Dir: Kinji Fukasaku, same guy who did Battle Royale and a ton of other stuff.
Cup Noodles: She made beans!
Pretty girls showing their boobs! Check!
Now the brother is after him!
Naked girl in fur coat: Lady cop with pink garter belt!
Arguably the greatest role for a 1966 Prince Skyline 1500 Deluxe until the advent of video games!
Brasil, day after tomorrow: Rob another bank!
Weird and brutally unexpected homosexual love-hotel rape scene: Check!
One of the great chaotic movie chase scenes: What if Frank Bullitt quit the S.F.P.D. and joined the Keystone Kops?! What if Buddy Hackett and Johnathan Winters flew off the road while filming It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!, and landed in the middle of an Osaka Bank Robbery?! Roving news teams, irate citizens, motorcycle gangs, cop-on-cop violence, and our rape victim in a red Trans Am!: All is lost for our heroic couple! But wait!!!
Lots of handheld camera work.
Slapstick-Noir Rom-Com: This movie made me so happy – it wasn’t what I was expecting when I first started watching. I love it when I’m eyeballing a flick and thinking, “B+,” and then the whole thing explodes and takes off. Check it out!
At poker last weekend, asked the guy on my right about his card protector. Turns out, he was a member of a group that goes around to spots where filming occurred. Kinda like geocaching, but for movie sites.
Unfortunately, I failed to note the name of the organization. Sounded fun, we briefly discussed different spots we'd visited because of movies we liked.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm kinda surprised I haven't heard of this as I'm rather partial to Japanese exploitation, who can give those crazy Italians a run for their money imho.
If you like that kinda thing, I highly recommend Zero Woman Red Handcuffs (1974) if you haven't seen yet, about a badass female cop who, along with her sexy red handcuffs, infiltrates a scuzzy gang of kidnappers, whose taste in fashion- even by early 70s standards- is often as offensive as their behaviour. In terms of content it throws in everything but the kitchen sink, while cheerfully throwing anything resembling good taste out the nearest window and quite rightly too. 😀

This one's famous, but I've never seen it. Same director, same lead actress, Miki Sugimoto. All this stuff I looked for years ago is becoming available, thx for the heads up.
I tried several times, but could not make it through "Greedy People." Every character was annoying even though the actors across the board are top notch.
"Logan Lucky" was okay, but not great, if you are looking for something to mindlessly make 2 hours pass by.
They are coming for Phat Mack. 2+2 not mentioned.
Short of yelling 'Fire' in a crowded movie theater, because no one cares if you yell 'fire' in an empty theater, there should be NO THROTTLING of subjectivity... and to do so only empowers the established power brokers.
Dissension is healthy...

there are a lot of YT channels and facebook groups that do this location geocaching...
Secrets and Lies
For some reason, I've never gotten around to this Mike Leigh film. It's terrific. A number of plots are interwoven but all come together at the end.
The chief plot element is about an adopted daughter searching for her birth mother. The daughter is black and the mother white. But the film really isn't so much about that as the secrets and lies revealed in the closing scenes.
It's a film that explores families, what constitutes a family, how they break apart, and finally how they come together.
The acting from all the main characters is superb (it's a Mike Leigh film, so you know how his actors work in collaboration with him).
I find Leigh's films deeply affecting, and Secrets and Lies is no different. You don't know how this one is going to end, but you will find it satisfying.

I’ve been in monument valley a number of times including Cane valley next to it. I did water sampling to monitor for possible contamination. A Federal Program to assure the wells used by the Navaho were not contaminated.
It was an interesting project and the sheep would follow me around. Not so much the Navaho.
