Question about river calls
Hi!
I'm going through my last year's stats in HM3 and found out that I'm consistently losing making river calls OOP and winning making them IP.
Does anyone have an possible hypothesis for this?
I play PLO100-200 6max.
Riv call efficiency OOP 0.98; riv call win% OOP 37.1

Sorry if I;m missing it but is this filtered for just hu by river, multiyway or both?
Could be a couple things. Your pool heavily underbluffs rivers in general and you may be overcalling in a number of spots where bluffs are very scarce.
Potentially could be a slight range reading problem from turn to river and maybe you're under estimating how much value they have in their river range?
Rivers are also a bit tougher given sample size is less than previous streets given we obv get to the river less.
Just because we disagree on solver philosophy doesn't mean I don't respect your work and would likely consider you my toughest opponent in most lineups. I value your analysis more highly than about 95% of the people who post here.
Could it be that the IP calling node is different from OOP because we don't have the need to split our range in order to arrive to river call spot?
So a losing OOP river call would mean we are taking too many strong hands to our river betting range, leaving our checking range too weak?
Isn't this just how positions work?
To make a river call OOP, you must check.
IP, your river action is uncapped when facing a bet.

The filter for first graph is HM3 "River Check-Call"
The filter for 2nd graph is HM3 "River call", which should not count the check-call nor the bet-call scenarios.
I don't have any conclusions. When I first read this, I thought I had insights, but the more I thought about it, the more complicated it got. Just so you know, I have a small database, and both of mine were negative and looked very similar to each other. It was very informative to look at the individual hands in these nodes though, at least for me, and I will comment on that below.

I started thinking about this from the land of GTO. If the solver was in this node - calling oop or calling ip on the river, what would their expected profit look like? I think it is zero. I don't believe this node is meant to be a source of profit, but it's defensive to prevent your opponents from bluffing too often against you and showing a massive profit.
So, if that is our starting point and how we view this node, then what is happening with your results? One, the results are not very informative since the sample is small. If the expectation is zero, then variance will dominate the results. Two, the asymmetry between the nodes for you speaks more towards imbalances on earlier streets than it does about the node or the river play. When I investigated my play in these nodes, I found most of my hands involved big mistakes on the turn, putting me in situations on the river I shouldn't have been facing.
For you to be making so much in position, you are arriving in this situation with MUCH too strong of a range. It's uncommon for opponents to lead out on the river after playing passively on the turn, so you are probably checking behind the turn with too many hands. It's hard to say without looking at hands, though. The huge losses out of position make me think you are building big pots on the flop and turning and then putting yourself into tricky situations on the river in big pots.
I assume there are imbalances in play here. It's hard to comment much more without specific hands or other stats, but that is my conclusion—this stat has highlighted that you are misplaying earlier streets in both situations.
I think you should post 5-10 hands from each position without any commentary - just bulk post them (numbered) in this thread.

FWIW when I filtered for these same spots over my whole current database (about 4x compared to the sample used in the OP), the graphs looked the same overall.
