I think people like him have been attacked often. Attacking himself is a way to beat his detractors to the punch. It's a way to soften the blow. "You didn't hurt me because I agree with you".
Even more cringe is his inauthentic praise of people who probably don't like him. Perhaps saying nice things about the MODs is similar to being extra nice to the floor person in the hopes they will rule in your favor in the future.

Blitz is ******* miserable. I've always hated the concept of losing on time in chess. I understand the need to have a clock so someone doesn't sit there until Yellowstone explodes, but the very idea of losing a game of chess because of a clock even though you've played better strategically/tactically is an absolute abomination to me. Completely undermines the game.
It's true that what you describe sucks.
But using up all your time and having like 15 seconds to their minute and then just taking advantage of your better position or material advantage while auto-moving and relying on increment and still winning can be glorious.
Usually I just time out but the times I don't is a lot of fun

I don't begrudge others for enjoying fast chess. I just don't. I've always liked staring at a position for 30+ minutes and diving as deeply into it as I can. I have won OTB tournament games moving only on the delay (not even increment) and while it was gratifying to win, it is the type of adrenaline rush I don't enjoy.
I'm pretty firmly retired from chess nowadays, though.

Lots of games have been lost on time at classical time limits. If someone loses on time in a better position regardless of time limits they deserve to lose because they only achieved a superior position by using more time than their opponent.

Thanks to old age* and being on psych meds for over 25 years**, my rating is now at my floor of 1800.
