So his "spreading hate" comments are probably directed towards the gay/trans issue and stopping him from doing that was the objective. But for someone with his background, the root cause isn't so much Kirk as much as the chruch's position on the gay/trans issue. So if all that holds, this was a religiously motived killing for the most part.
