Seems the opposite. You can't commit violence against a building or statute; obviously looting isn't a violent crime. Of course people could commit a violent crime in doing any of that but my general sense of things over the last several years is that wasn't so much 'our' political left as much as what the current administration has began calling NVE (Nihilist Violent Extremist), ie, people who commit violence without allegiance to any clear political ideology.

There is no situation involving traveling to visit a riot with an assault rifle in which I think self-defense is a valid claim.
Of course it could be valid if your home is broken into or you're randomly assaulted on the street. In fact I cheer when those things happen.
