Let's give him some love. Gene Mingo was a 6'2" hoss of a black man, also a RB and kick returner, scored 13 TDs in the league, threw 2 TD passes, is still alive, played his last two years for the Steelers.

I have nothing but respect for people who played back then.
Well, I know a couple of guys from that era I have something other than respect for, but I'm not quite sure what I would call it. I'm sure there is a measure of respect of some sort woven in there.

Well there is that thing where they played through broken legs and appendicitis attacks without an ounce of drama, glory, self-promotion, etc. One guy had open heart surgery at half time and threw the game winning TD in the 4th Quarters: Billy Kilmer.

A late friend of mine got his fingers stuck in Cookie Gilchrist's facemask when he broke a run. He swore he was negotiating with him as Gilchrist ran down the field to just fall down. Gilchrist refused all his offers and just kept running while my friend had to run along to try to keep up with him. LOL!
eta: may have been his shoulder pads rather than his facemask. I was laughing so hard and drinking so much that I couldn't swear to either.
