Codenames for Suckers

Anyone (preferably who hasn't played in ages/ever and sucks at it like myself) fancy a game of Codenames?

Or regulars if

Ace - out because of one - 0
Bermuda - island nation, Marianas trench? Don't think it's here and not capitalised
Crusader - War + Crusader would be battle or some other much more obvious connection than trench
Penny - out because of one - 0
Pin - don't see a connection. Grenade links pin and war very well.
Pocket - same sort of shape as a trench.
Root - underground like a trench
Seal - don't think so. Navy would probably link Seal and War.
Sherlock - was there some Holmes story with the word trench prominent? I wouldn't know but if I had fo guess I'd say no.
Stethoscope - don't see it. MASH would be the link to War and Stethoscope i think.

I think we're down to pocket and root.

I'm not sure which one I like best.

I think I like the link of pocket and trench better, but I just don't think trench is the best connector of war and pocket. Fatigues or knife would maybe be better.

Root and War, I don't see an obvious connection, but I think the link of trench and root is weaker.

I'm coming around to your idea that war/pocket has better options.

I'm fine with the root idea if you want to fire it.

nice job

Was trying to get you guys to think of a trench coat. Couldn’t figure out another clue for war/sherlock/pocket. Data was for lab/server/sherlock. I don’t know what cap has to do with data. The zero clue to clear ace was to set up an intelligence clue (war/sherlock/octopus/delta), but since you guys had already put octopus and delta next on the list, I went for the win with trench. Seal was also in the way with intelligence, even though it’d been clued with mason.

When I clue zero, it’s almost always to get rid of a word rather than to clue toward anything. I had largely expected it to be pentagon and move on, didn’t consider the number connections you all made for other words on the board.

Oh well, almost got there. gg

Data cap is a thing - eg, your internet service might have a data cap on it

was a tough board with lots of blockers

delta and octopus were both blocked by seal
march/crusader/fighter blocked war/delta
etc.

I didn't see an easy way to dance around the blockers, so I just went ahead with boxer even though it would unblock some stuff for them, as their list would still be tough enough

ya'll did what I thought you'd do with boxer, with hook being neutral so no big deal
I did say boxer, not boxing, so Ray could be higher on your list, but didn't matter since you had the words + hook

mason was for brick/seal/crusader; masons feature heavily in da vinci code, national treasure, etc. as the ones behind the holy crusade treasures; and the mason seal; thought about masonic instead of mason to lean more into that, but didn't want you to think that I was avoiding brick

didn't think of ladder for mason, but luckily we had enough blockers they couldn't get it done so it was fine

Will look at this in more detail soon, but I will say that God is the father son and holy ghost. Perhaps ghost should be bumped up the list.

In Christianity, sure. Moving it up to the top three works for me. He didn’t capitalize god, but maybe that was to make sure we didn’t think we were being clued off of Rome/Saturn or something.

He probably didn't capitalise it because he didn't want us thinking of some piece of media with God in the title. Like if beach was there and we were meant to think God only Knows Beach Boys or something.

I think Rome is very much on the list, but you can bump it down if you want.

I've not heard of a golden calf, but I'll take your word for it (cows are also sacred in Hinduism).

I'm happy with your list and backups. The order is debatable, but I don't feel strongly enough to debate it with you on turn 1.

After the exodus, while Moses was on Mt. Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the Israelites made a golden calf to worship. And yes, cows and bulls have been worshipped in various religions for several millennia.
