*** Chess Low Content Thread ***
Hey guys,
The Chess BBV thread is for beats and variance and brags, this one is for low content stuff which is like not i
There are an enormous number of chess books for kids. I know some coaches who swear by the Chess Steps books. There are also a ton of videos on youtube, as well as instructional material on the playing sites. What site is he playing the bots on?
chess.com
Maybe try some puzzle rush, might be fun for him. I'd start with survival unless he's comfortable solving with the clock ticking.
FWIW if you just want him to have fun , opening books are fine .
Anything else, find other area like tactic solving , etc .
Study end games and tactics before the openings.
Kids typically love tactics. Give him very simple rook and pawn endgames that need to memorized and just play thru them until he can do it without thinking.
There's also the like 800 page "Mate in X" book from the Polgar family, maybe under the Dad's name? If I could do it over again I'd do that book and avoid openings books.
There's always the old "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess". Good for learning the basics of mating combinations.
House,
Just make sure that you do chess together as much as you can.
I'm something of a lost talent and its because I did all of my activities as a youngster by myself. I learned bad habbits etc.
Plus it will be more fun for the kid.
Find out what the kid enjoys. Many kids love tactics.
Thanks all.
like Tuma said, spend time with him and also make sure the kid has fun. Let his love of the game grow naturally
the rest will take care of itself, the above advice is good of course.
Hey McLovin' - do you play chess and/or have you the last few years? IIrc you're a (imo) very strong player, FM? Curious about who on here actually plays...I'm finally getting back into chess after a 3+ year layoff. I know this subforum is almost completely dead but still interesting to know who may play and their activity level.
I'm still playing, but less actively than I used to. Maybe two dozen USCF rated games per year.
I reached a dead end after playing thousands of thoughtless blitz games a year for a few years. Me no like to play anymore.

I'm sort of in this phase right now. My kid likes chess so got me back into it. I like playing with him, but when he's away I braindead click on blitz. I feel I should try to get better rather than just mindlessly playing, but not putting in any effort.
Braindead blitz never makes me happy or enjoy chess. So I try to play Rapid. However, I really should be playing blitz, I just need to find some way to review each game right after playing. If I can make that a habit I think I'd enjoy it.
Yeah I'll play 10 min games and then review them, try really hard to avoid blitz. I also play casually untimed with a friend at the gym who is only slightly weaker than me, but much better with his knights.

I play thousands of games per year - all online
Stopped being a bullet junky and started playing rapid and am actually improving for the first time in years
I have a deeply held personal belief that any game mode that would force me to have to sacrifice move quality for time is not consistent with the spirit of the game, so I try to never play game modes like that on principle.
To me, a chess game needs to feel like a major event that I will remember for a long time, poring over the details, prodding for things I should've done and ways to ensure I don't repeat mistakes I made.
A blitz game is as meaningful as a coin flip to me and less fun. Lightning/bullet/whatever it's called now is just pure silliness to me.
Sacrificing move quality for time is every game mode that isn't correspondence. So do you only play correspondence?
I can respect that!
Me, when I play, I just play bad bullet and have fun with it. Improve a lot, but you don't get better by playing in my view, you get better by studying.
I think correspondence is great. That's where I achieved my highest rating.
I'm sure like a 30 min game would be fine, but I'd rather not spend my time waiting a few minutes while my opponent is thinking of their move.
Yes it gives me more time to think of counter strategies, but I prefer looking at a board for my move.
Not sure about that, I'm a weak/average player and in most positions, if I had 5 minutes or 1 hour, it wouldn't change my decision.
