Immigration in the west over the last decade have been
Just wanted to start a poll and get people's opinions on immigration over the last decade. This includes both legal and illegal.
This seems like a pretty controversial topic but I think it would be interesting to see the actual arguments and perception behind people's feelings. I know the forum doesn't police empty posts with no content or arguments but maybe we could do it in this thread. For example don't call me a ******, make the argument for why that's the case
As a Canadian I feel like we were the gold standard for successful immigration. Someone's race or color didn't also indicate their economic status. Positive integration, acceptance, growth.
I think things have changed for the worse over the last decade both here and abroad.
I think most of the people upset about immigration aren't actually negatively affected by it.
I certainly don't have a problem with it and generally prefer non-Americans to Americans as they tend to be more interesting.
Is it worse or worst? I should have googled and pretend I knew
Seems like Uke is the only educated Canadian out there....the rest is a bunch of babbling brownshirts like Hole and Lazy Lozen.
I have yet to see any statistics that point to any immigration being bad
I've seen lots of statistics that point to any immigration being really good
(In the USofA)
Those numbers are seemingly made up but sure, whatever you say
Find me an official source that isn't CIS and I'll humor the conversation
There should be an option above great, maybe lifesaving.
These immigrants...they breed. The West...they are a bunch of incels and women putting off having children until one of a handful of prince charmings come along, in other words not having children. This is not going to change. The only way the West will survive is via immigration, the only thing that can prevent total societal demographic collapse.
Why would you think this is remotely true. You donβt thinks the USA could remain a superpower with a population declining to 300 million or 275 million I. The next twenty years?
We certainly can't maintain GDP growth and dollar dominance dropping to 300 million or 275 million in the next 20 years

The U.S. would remain a superpower because of its starting point, but to Deuces's point, a declining population and the accompanying demographic shift (referring to age) would be highly unwelcome from an economic perspective.
P.S.--Now that a I look at it, a 19% population decline (which is what 275 million would be) in just 20 years probably would be catastrophic.
I don't feel remotely qualified to answer this question on a country by country basis for the entire Western world, but I have always been generally pro-immigration re the U.S.

It's the age structure inside that decline which will topple us if you we don't get in a lot more immigrants, like continuously, specifically the ones Americans don't want because those are the ones who can maintain a decent age distribution. I'm not saying like 10 years, but in 50 to 100 years the entire West is going to crumble and it is too late to fix it with birth rates. It will simply have to import more people from Africa and Latin America.

This is exactly the demographic shift to which I was referring. It's a very serious issue in places like Japan and Russia. Japan historically has been very restrictive about immigration. They opened up somewhat in 2019, and likely will have to open up even more in the future for purely economic reasons.
it depends what you want. a high gdp per capita or a high gdp. The state wants a high gdp but people currently already living there should want a high gdp per capita

the former sure but why the later? Population is not something holding the united states back. There are many country with more people. a 5% decrease won't matter that much and after a decade of population decline imigration will become popular and it will balance out .
That being said the united states does not have an immigration problem at all and they probably want more. Just a quality of imigration/ illegal immigration problem.
Canada tho...
I don't think many people except the extreme are against quality legal migration of people with skills. The problem people have is immigrants unwilling to integrate and turn Canadian citys into India and parts of minnesota into Somolia. We have also become left leaning atheist states and its weird when you invite enclaves of muslim fanatics. If you want to come here leave your shitty religious extremism behind
GDP growth is closely tied with stock market growth which drives international investment which is settled in dollars
If people can't get their safe oversized returns here they will seek them elsewhere
We drive a lot of international trade too
I don't think it makes much sense to talk about "immigration in the west". Western countries are not demographically and geographically similar enough for that to be a useful topic.
Nor do comment much on the immigration policies of other countries, that is their business. I will say that there are nations out there which are unjustly burdened during crises (often poor ones at that) in their region and some that get away with doing almost nothing, even though they are more than rich enough to do so.
In own country I think the immigration debate is mainly dictated by two sides in media: One which consistently ignores problems and challenges that immigration poses and one that is largely based on bigotry and hatred of foreign people. This makes nuance and fact-based discussion difficult.
As for my views, let us just say I make few friends in either camp.

What you describe is fairly close to the media dynamic in the U.S. also.
Starting point matters for superpower longevity but they can decline very fast. British Empire was in all it's glory at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the high points of peace and prosperity. Friends with our mortal enemy in 1905 etc
Maybe it was beyond even chezlaw level idiocy to say 'erm hang on a mo ... '
critically imo there was someone ready and waiting to take over from the british. Same thing now. Also a bit then and far more now, was the new tech changing everything.

Although bigotry certainly plays a part, you failed to mention that the other side of ignoring problems is people addressing the problems

This is where I thought we'd go and where it would get contentious
It's hard to tell how much of the left is just blank slaters that don't realize that people for other parts of the world are not the same. Like you don't just land on the magical soil of a 1st world country and start morphing into a well adjusted member of society. The segment of the seems to believe that we are privileged and it's our duty to support, rescue, etc those from the 3rd world. It's hard to tell how much is from each camp
But we all know the type of person I'm talking about
I feel like immigration can be broken down in to a lot of segments
- we can talk about who. And In canada and parts of Europe it's an obvious and highly sensitive subject. Anyone living in reality should recognize that accepting record levels of immigration from different countries/regions will have very different results
-Amount. This is a problem in Canada regardless of who
-legal vs illegal
-Age and demographics. Japan has a serious issue
-legal vs illegal
So funny to see a diehard supporter of a child raping Nazi talking about "well adjusted members of society"

Something an American wouldn't understand is my distaste of religious immigration.
America is a super religious country so its kind of bigoted to not allow say a Muslim because most of your country is Christian already.
However Americans should understand they are not the norm in modern day religion they are something 4x more religious then other western states.
"A 2002 study showed 65% of Americans considered religion important, versus only 16.5% in Sweden, making the U.S. about four times more religious on this measure."
Why this matters? Its actually more reasonable to bring in religious people if your already religious even if its a different Abraham religion. In non religious country's like Canada and sweden this just leaves to massive enclaves of immigrants bringing their own values to the country and not integrating because god does not allow it and god will always trump the state to them.
A good example is Quebec it used to be super catholic but it has a huge push for secularism and it is just super anti religion now which is why you hear things about them like they ban hijabs in schools. To them that's normal and not racist.. If your not willing to leave your hijab at home they don't want you because they did the same thing to local Catholics over the last few decades. Why should their immigrants have the rights their own local Catholics don't?
Another thing is Christians are easy to convert to secularism and lets be honest no one follows these religions seriously anymore. SO yes I would prefer a Christian immigrant over a Muslim immigrant for that reason. No that does not make me racist. Buddhists are pretty chill tho they integrate well. Not all religions are equal in integration. and yes we want integration and that's ok it does not make you a racist or a bad person its a reasonable request .
The united states president always has to be Christian no none religious president has ever been elected. (except maybe trump lol but he faked it) No one ever asks the religion of the candidates running in sweden canada france etc. No one cares
Just trying to give my American friends a non American perspective about religious immigration. I don't think Americans realize how religious their own country is compared to others. The numbers are quite staggering. The rest of the western world is pretty much non religious compared to you. But we still mass immigrate religious people which to me is not ideal.
