** World Cup 2026 - USA, Canada, Mexico Thread **
Saw no thread was active yet while it starts tomorrow so I'd gave it a go
No real time for an extensive write-up but lets
argentina
cape verde
australia
egypt (w/o salah?)
switzerland
algeria
colombia
ghana
semis is ~brazil/norway/mexico/england
how many goals does messi finish with?
The algeria celebration added extra time, which ended right when austria scored. There is some ref nuance though to when they blow that whistle but that part was just unfortunate timing.
Ultimately, Iran drew New Zealand instead of blasting the weak team in the group is why they're out but they're gonna remember that sequence for a long time.
Iran was the only team eliminated without losing a match
.
How is extra time determined? Is it rounded up to the nearest minute, rounded down, or something else?
FWIW I have never seen extra time not being in 1 minute intervals.
vibes
I cannot ****ing believe this horseshit
Iran: 3 games in America
Iran: you must train in Tijuana, you can’t bring your entire staff in, you can only come to america for the game and must leave the INSTANT the game ends
Belgium game: nitpicky offsides negates winning goal
Egypt game: holy ****ing **** negates winning goal
Every last thing that happened today
And this final insult of refusing to call the game after the Algeria goal
**** this **** this **** this
When Algeria scored, there was 1 more minute to go.
They don't just end it because the celebrations take 2 minutes. That 1 extra minute was played.
My family is from Iran (don't ban me american mods plz) so I've been naturally rooting for them and words can't describe how disgusting the full sequence of events has been in the last 48 hours
today I feel disabled
Btw, regarding the offside calls (vs Egypt and the one of Colombia vs Portugal) -
it seems like the right solution is to have technology that we call "automatic" and put a bunch of avatars instead of the real frame pictures and people will start believing it's perfect and can't be wrong when every analysis points to a margin of error of ~3-10cm
Reminds me of the Hawkeye in tennis where most people don't actually realize it can be wrong on marginal calls
There is no solution to this unsolvable equation but people should at least stop feeling that it's been "solved" because they get some sort of 3D picture on their TV generated by a methodology they don't have a clue in
funny looking back this morning at all the scoreless ALG:AUT hot takes itt
Just caught up, all I can say is wtf

Iβm still just shocked
Even just before yesterdayβs 3 things, literally every last one of these things has to happen for Iran to not be through:
South Africa beats South Korea, Bosnia beats Qatar, Paraguay draw Australia, Ecuador beats Germany, Japan either ties or loses to Sweden, and Senegal beats Iraq by 3 or more goals.
Part of me doesn't get the fascination of making the knockout stage for these sub par teams. Wow you made it congratulations, now you get to lose Argentina or France.

Are you of Iranian descent or your wife? I was cheering for them with absolutely no skin in the game because the offsides call was absolute horseshit and not why VAR exists. Fix this ****.
On another note, vuvuzela gang rise up. Let us LOL Canada for one more time this year.

You really can't see why it would mean a ton to a small country? It's the only stage that puts them in relevancy to the rest of the world. Nobody was thinking about Cape Verde before this and now its a cool story.
Gutted for Iran
Senegal & Algeria just made it and are rewarded by facing LolBelgium & LolSwitzerland

Chip and a chair brother. Imagine the scenes if Argentina somehow bricks against Cabo Verde.
Sports is so much better with fairytales like Leicester and Greece.

The entire country got a holiday here in Scotland just for our first game vs Haiti. Just making it was huge after decades of pain.
We've never made the knockout stages ever and if we had done we'd probably have got another national holiday.
Felt gutted for Iran as well. I watched their game vs Morocco in the 2018 World Cup with my brother sat next to a group of Iranians in London. Absolute scenes when the last minute goal went in that night, good memories.

During March Madness, you don't think a 15 seed should be happy to beat a 2 just because they'll likely get dicked in the next round?

They were certainly unlucky on the whole, but the goals in the Belgium and Egypt clearly both offside (it's a yes/no thing not a judgement call) and the Algeria game obviously needs to go on, those aren't (or shouldn't be) controversial decisions.
