Taking another shot at the WSOP and the main event
I turned 60 this year. To celebrate, my brother and I decide to give the WSOP a kick in the pants.
Heading out to vegas today to play the following:
Day 1C - mini main
600 Deepstack
800 Summer Celebration
10K Main Event - Day 1C
Anything else if out early...
I played the main 20 years ago and am hoping to outlast my 4.5 hr run last time. I know we will have some fun and meet some people and play alot of poker. What can be better than that?

A tale of two day ones
start with 60 and 30 minutes levels. I was down to 45k the first 3 levels and then had the sequence of AK 3 bet and fold. QQ raise and 3bet and I 4 bet took it downs and then very next hand 4 bet AA in highjack and get called by button. The flop comes 999. I cbet for 30 percent. The button calls. The turn is the ten. I think i made a mistake. I figured he has a high pair and it will look pretty bluffy to put him all in. So i did and he tank folds and shows JJ. probably the better play is to induce with the check. After that I lost half my stack with AK vs 8s on a K84 board. I did manage to get back to starting stack. But with blinds up i made a stand with KJ on a Kd7c10c board and he had 107 and could catch up. Fun day with nice dealers tho.

my brother ran up his stack to 500K. Cruising until 40 away from the money. Then his Q4 got all in against KQ on a Q43 board. The poker gods threw a couple of 6s out and he was counterfeited. I did pay him 20 bucks for the last longer.
Next up is the 600 deepstack!
Good luck. Following.
how exciting - super cool trip. hope it goes well
Have fun!
SUNRUN IN THE SUN - Day 1 of 600 deepstack
Start with 30k and 40 min levels. In the first 15 minutes i lose 17K in chips against super aggro lady to left of me with AK and 5 bet flop and 9 high board. Stayed patient with still 120BB with blinds at 100/100. Got some traction in level 3 with cooler AA vs KK allin. Thought that was easy and decided to do it again in level 3. WTF!. managed to double again with QQ vs AK. Every premium hit for me for the next 6 hrs. I had multiple sets that held and was even hitting sets on the turn. By dinner break i had 234K and the average was 100 maybe. After dinner break, move to new table and get it all in with AA again against 10s and Jacks. ( I really wanted 1 person to fold really, against 2 players don't feel comfortable). Coolered Them both and had aroun 500K. Probably ran it up to 540. Had some setbacks when my 10s forgot to hit a set and paid off a bit river with board JJ933. I should have folded but sometimes you know the right play in your head, but your hand is not listening to it.
Got to make some chip art

Had an interesting hand at the end of the day and would like an opinion. Min-raised with 89s in the hijack and shorty shoves on button with 29k. the BB snap calls with around 270K and flips his hand over and shows AhJd. Now its back on me. What is the best play here? I called and thought shoving would be ok but i dont know if he decides to go with it. Its a meta game baby!. I lost to the diamond flush on the turn because an 8 was on flop montone diamons and he called after i bet.
Locked up min-cash.
On to day 2 with about 340K and 5/10K bb!

oh and my brother crashed and burned with one rebuy. Aces cracked to end tourney early.
Last longers now a wash? Nice bag!
you don't mention exact blinds etc on the 89 hand & I get the attraction if you've seen his AJ but given it's 3 way, I would probably fold.
the blinds were 4/8k i raised to 16, short stack all in for 29 and BB calls with AhJd and i well cover both with BB at 270 and I have 450K.
Great tournament so far! Running good is nice. Running good is fun.
I'm folding the 89 hand despite being quite live against the AJ. No real need to take the worst of it in a big gamble for a relatively small amount of dead money, but being greedy can pay off sometimes too.
Nice bag and interesting the opinions on the 89s hand when villain exposed his hand. I would have done the same as you and called.
I actually misread the situation and thought the AJ player jammed. If he just called then yea, you need to call with 89 for just a little more.
Jamming would be a fun play there too, but given the weird dynamics, I think AJ finds the call a lot of the time, and then we're in a bad spot.
Call and try to hit seems best, as the price is great.
Trying to run deep in the night -Day 2 of the 600 deepstack
Started a a good table. 2nd in chips with slightly bigger stack on my right at around 400K. the posers are gone. (except me). I start the first level horrible trying to bluff off 6s on k high board and similar situation against big blind. Blinds are at 5K 10K and im down to 200K. Only play there for about an 30 min and get moved to new table. I am now a shorty and having stacks to my left and right. Finally double when short stack shoves and i wake up with Kings.
About 30 minutes later find some aces that no one wanted and raise in middle position to 25K. (blinds are 6/12 K). the big blind is aggressive and more than covers. He reraises to 60K. Come to mama! I think a pro or reg thinks a 4 bet would be small to keep in worse hands. And i also believe with no statistical proof that a pro looks at me and think this guys plays scared so larger raises are protecting weaker ranges. I don't know if anyone else thinks this but i think this can be exploitable. (let me know in comments ur thoughts). I reraise to 195. He tanks for a few minutes. I am willing the call in my brain. I was totally wrong!
He jams with QQ and I stack him. At 865 high!
I have a birdseye view of kabriel. He is running between 2 tournies this time in the same room. He is currently playing online final table today also.

I get moved to new table and was chip leader of old table. My sun run is going to end soon though. I don't think i had many interesting hands but was card dead for the next 3 or so hours. I did play AQ on button. SB had QQ and ran me out. I also hand 3rd pair against BB with TT on scary board. Whittling down. Blinds are now 15/30 and I have about 11 bigs. Finally get AQo and jam in middle possible Big Stack SB laughs and snaps with JJ. Classic flip i lose.
143 out of 5000. Cash for about 800.
On to Day 1 of the 800 Summer Celebration
P.S. - Brother update. My brother got the pleasure of playing the weekly 250 Seniors event. I think it had around 777 runners. He managed to bubble out at 117 place. Waah Waah.
Not celebrating at the 800 celebration event
Since I have bought in to $1600 in events and won $2400 i think its perfect to play the 800 event. You start with 30K in chips and 30 min levels. I have two reg young pros to my right.
I am holding my own am about even at start of level 1, 2
Level 3 get into hand with pro to my right. The first prod minraises UTG to 800 and the second pro one calls and I have KTo in the BB. I call also. Flop comes KQX rainbow. Second pro continues for 2K and the first pro folds and I call. The turn is an A. I check and he checks. I assume i'm beat badly now and he is trying to set me up with a big bet on the river. The river binks the J and Im good. Not sure if I should check tho. (opinions). I instead bet small for 1800 and expect him to call with any two pair. He looks super confused and goes into the tank. I eventually folds and says to me "That is an illogical bet, it makes no sense. I should have jammed. You never have a ten there". The first pro makes it worse and says he folded TT.
After that i built up to 72 at the 2nd or 3rd break. After that I lost 2 hands in a row with AJ UTG+2 and bigger one with TT. I min raise UTG with TT to 3500 and 1000/1500 blinds and the first pro min clicks it back to 7K. I call. The flop is K99. I check and he bets 6K. I never know what to do here. Calling seems so weak and he knows he can bet me off this hand but folding seems also very weak. Any opinions? I feel like im being milked but call again. The turn is a blank and I check again. He continues for somethink like 12K and i fold. Figure im beating nothing.
Now im down to 40 and in danger zone. Back to the SB. Folds to me and I have 58s. I limp with designs to reraise because first pro is going to do that all the time. He obliges and 1/2K level makes it 8K. I reraise to 20K expecting fold with so much strength. He doesn't oblige and calls. The flop is Kxx and i jam trying to represent the K. He has the K8s and snaps me off. I think i should have jammed pre-flop and he is more likely to fold. Out at level 10.
I am happy with my play except I guess i can still check/fold with 20K but other than that im ok.
Brother Update
He played the same event and ran his stack up to 170K. And then he got 70 away from the money. He has four days of deep runs and nothing to show. I had only one but have a cash. Who is playing better? Who knows? On to the Main on Sunday!!! (originally scheduled Saturday, but needed an off day with a friend in town)
The pros were to my left not right
After that i built up to 72 at the 2nd or 3rd break. Calling seems so weak and he knows he can bet me off this hand but folding see
Playing medium showdown value is probably the hardest part of NLHE. I think this is fine. Maybe we can also call turn if we think he's up to no good, but then we also have to be prepared to face a monumental decision on the river.
If we think about his value range that wants to double barrel here, it should really just be AA, AK, KK, and maybe KQ. That's not a lot of hands. Weaker Kx can occasionally 3-bet pre, especially if suited. Some of those hands might slow down on the turn, since you can also have KQ or AK. Natural bluffs could be hands like JT and QJ that flop the gutter. He can also just have basically any pre-flop semi-bluff like suited wheel hands. Hands with no showdown value may want to keep barreling to get folds from a hand like yours. Hands with medium showdown value like QQ, JJ, and 88-22 will probably slow down on the turn once you call the flop.
It's a spot where we can comfortably fold against nits and ABC players. Against wizards, we might consider doing something heroic on the turn and river.
Good luck in the Main!
Great points. I felt like he was milking me. He has a lot of bluffs but that is why it is such a good spot for him.
are you playing ME right now?
yes. report to follow.
Keeping ur cool in the blazing heat - Day 1D of the main event
WARNING! - Long post for the casual reader.
Start with 60K and 2 hour levels. Unheard of slow levels. My brother and I decided we don't have to 3 bet bluff, check raise crazy and call loose. Let the day come to us and don't get setup for failure. You can see your opponents and look them up. Phil to my direct left has 700K in winnings. (ahem). Vitor in seat 1 has 300K and Leo from Brazil in seat 3 has 400K. The rest are under 50 which i can live with.
We decide to skip level 1 and start at level 2. I think it was a wise choice to give the table time to fill in and it did. I get there with 1 30 mins left in level two. I let go of 55 early to reraise and then proceed to get JJ and AA two hands in a row that help me start the day. I was so tight on AA that i checked the turn and the SB bets 2200 on the river with a K high board with two 8s on it that on think before i call. She looked stunned with her KQ.
That helped start my day.
If i thought the 700K winnings guy was aggressive (Phil) i had it wrong. He always had it. Raise with A4s on the hijack he 3bets me. Mr. conversative today folds and he shows KK. He does the same thing in similar position and I have to fold and shows KK. He is playing tight!
Had a big and somewhat interesting hand with Phil in SB vs BB. folds to me and I have K9h. I raise to 1200 (200, 400 BB) and Phil calls. 8sTdJc flop. I check and Phil bets 2500. I call. The turn is the 5c on the turn. I check and he continues with 3K. I get my first good bluff of the day and raise to 9K. I got the straight draw have a draw to the nut straight. I expect at fold 50% of the time and i can decide on rivers. Phil completely disappoints and min-clicks it back for 18K. F*** my life! I cant put him on a hand except the nuts or club draw air. I go back to conservative and tank for 3 minutes and fold. Sigh. Phil is pretty open and we discuss the hand later and he swears he had the nuts. If so, then im drawing to 3 raggedy outs. Let me know thoughts on the reraise. That puts me down back to 65.
Bad beat at the dinner break
Made it to dinner break with 65K. As you all are aware the lines are amazing at the dinner break. I was in the horseshoe and they have the cashier area roped off in case people need to get there. I see an opening to get closer to the door and duck under the rope. My 60 year old body did not like that and I stumble and face plant on the floor. Don't worry, only hundreds of people were looking on in horror. Poker players are good people. Young guy rushes up and and offers his hand to get up. Second guy rushes up and asks if im ok. I think he probably had 911 typed in his phone ready to go. I said I'm ok and he responds with "I think you will be sore tomorrow". Nope. I'm sore today! I limp off to dinner.
I play the last two levels pretty straighforward and end bagging with 72K On to day 2 tuesday. I beat by 20 year ago record of 4.5 hrs!
Our Table was the best. Everyone having a great time and blessed to play this game even at high stakes. No one busted at our table and here is the selfie that proves how everything ended the day. I at the back there with my favorite hat!

great stuff. very happy for you to bag. hope you can run well on Tues
Thanks. Playing 2 in a few hours. One hand at a time...
If my maiden voyage into the Main Event last year qualifies me to give any advice, this would be it.
Make CERTAIN you’re getting good rest between days.
I bagged a healthy stack after Day 2, and was so amped up, I couldn’t fall asleep until 4 am. I think that directly led to playing bad, and getting knocked out on Day 3.
As the pressure intensifies each day you bag, I can only imagine the stress increases, by orders of magnitude.
Get your rest, stay frosty, and focused, and bring this to the best result you can make!!!
I appreciate it TJ. I went to bed early last night and managed it thru drugs. I have followed your thread for awhile now (not much of a poster until now) and always enjoyable.
