Proving I'm profitable before moving up in stakes

I will play 50 000 hands of 10NL zoom on GGpoker and try to maintain a winrate of 10bb/100. If I can accomplish this I move to 25NL. Hoping to achieve this within 1 month starting mid-next week.

I deposited $20 2 weeks ago and ran it up pretty aggressively to $200 playing 2/5/10NL. Took a shot at 25NL with 9 buyins and doubled my account in 2 hours then halved it in the next 2. I realized this is not the way to go. Just gotta put in the work to prove I'm not a total scrub, the stakes will go up in due time. My current winrate across all stakes is roughly 10bb/100 over 21K hands.

I'm pretty sure 10bb/100 post rake & pre rb is far from reachable on nl10 rush & cash on GG, nonetheless good luck!

I think you're right, I might just be running hot. I will include the various forms of RB that you get like the daily leaderboards and random bonuses. I know I won't be playing anything else (or depositing/withdrawing) during this challenge so I can just use my account balance to keep track.

Best of luck, will be following!

10bb/100h winrate is very possible in micros even with ggpoker rake

Interesting challenge, 50k hands, i want to do the same challenge too in the future hopefully soon, gl mate

Btw GG rake is no joke so you must be a total monster to achieve 10bb winrate which i dont think you can but still looking forward to see how it goes

The real starting amount is $220.76 since I just got a C$2 bonus from yesterday's 25NL madness.

I had time to play 3 hours today, 2 tables zoom. It feels completely different to play when you are playing to play well for a challenge compared to trying to increase your bankroll super fast. I made much fewer mistakes. It was also much more enjoyable and I had a really good flow going at one point.

Marked 28 hands for review so I'll get on that. I think the main thing is to be able to fold decent hands against aggression and not talk yourself into a call. I also need to study BB defense vs opens from various positions. I really have no idea how wide I can call, I'm just shooting in the dark calling a bunch of random hands that feel good. I also need to refine my 3bet ranges, maybe start randomizing.

Breakeven session all-in EV wise.

Also yes the rake is crazy, paid 1.6 buyins in rake in this short session LOL but you do get some back through cashback and bonuses so maybe not the worst? Idk

Spent yesterday studying some spots I think I'm weak in and played a bit more confidently now.

2nd session in, ran super hot. Almost feels bad to run hot because I'm supposed to prove I'm good not just lucky. But it will even out.

I have some big leaks in my game still. I notice it when I play too. From my notes:

I think being a bad player is great because you can get so much better just fixing relatively "easy" things like preflop leaks.

Another major issue is not actively hand reading and sort of playing on autopilot. I make some really cool and fun plays when I'm very in tune with how villain is playing his range but it's so easy to zone out. Idk how to fix this. More exercise or meditation?

Sidenote, I think Hand2Note is bugged with how it calculates rake. GG has given me "fish points" for like $4 paid in rake but H2N says I paid $13.29.

Not stopping that easy, played another 881 hands. Finally ran below EV but had one insanely huge and funny hand. Biggest pot in terms of BB I have ever played, I was so sure he had KK/QQ. Does he find a fold with QQ 250bbs deep?

I am working on playing longer and longer sessions, I will consider all of tomorrow one long session and try to get 3k+ hands.

Good luck with your journey. At micros a lot of it is about getting maximum value with your strong hands so very well played in this AA hand

Played a ton today. I was about breakeven. I got some rakeback and bonuses though so since I'm counting those for the challenge I'm "up". I don't even know how to get the graph for today since I played past midnight yesterday so it's including that too...

Most important thing to take away from today is that playing without music makes me much more focused. I zone out less, go on autopilot less, hand read much better, and am more aware of my own level of tilt / focus so I know when to quit. I thought it would be boring, but it actually makes it more fun because you can focus on every detail and really think about each hand. Maybe it's just me. Second thing is don't play directly in the morning, just wait a few hours after waking up. You can instead spend that time preparing through exercise, cleaning, etc.

Goal for tomorrow is to just play as well as I can, being mindful of the leaks in my game I know I have. 3000 hand goal again.

hands played: 8561 / 50 000
PnL since start = $146.95
bonuses & rakeback received = $27.72

Horrible day. Lucky to not be down so much. Played B/C game. Got coolered a bunch of times but at least 70% of the time I should have found the fold to the river raise. I listened to Patrik Antonius talk about how being a serious sportsman helped him become successful in poker and I totally feel the effects of never playing sports seriously in my life to be honest. I have zero routine/discipline for this stuff. I have to make a checklist for tomorrow. Going the **** to bed now so I can be better prepared tomorrow.

Before playing:

  • breakfast (banana)
  • morning run
  • shower
  • coffee
  • go over my biggest leaks / general strategy reminder for 10 minutes
  • chill the **** out

hands played = 10 790 / 50 000
PnL since start = $129 ish
bonuses & rakeback = $31.72

I've been breakeven / slightly losing over the past 10k or so hands. I wondered if I am doing something different to when I was winning which is making me lose, but then I went and looked at some really successful players' graphs and a 10k stretch of breakeven is literally nothing. Winning players also regularly have 10+ BI downswings. You really have to put in a ton of volume and have tough skin to handle losing days. I'm a couple buyins below all-in EV and I got coolered so many times I lost count but it's whatever, just play more.

I tested out playing 4 tables of rush n cash on gg. Too much for me but you do grind leaderboard points insanely fast. The rake you pay on gg is crazy though, I pay over 1 BI every day in rake on avg. If it wasn't for the rakeback and bonuses I'd be down massive instead of slightly down.

I still have the same biggest leak though: not being able to lay down a decent/good/great hand postflop. Sometimes it's just a cooler when villain literally has 1 combo that beats you but sometimes they just always have me beat but I can't find the fold. It costs me both in redline and blueline, because sometimes I fold a later street but should have folded earlier, and sometimes I call to showdown and lose.

Okay so here is the perfect example of my problem: I have top pair and I call a 3barrel because I talk myself into calling. They just always flip over the nuts here. It's legit only a bluff like 10% of the time. But I only remember the times I call and I felt like a genius so I keep calling.

Here my reasoning was: "Since he raised flop he doesn't have a king because the only raise there is AK and he didn't 3bet preflop so he doesn't have that. Therefore he is bluffing with QTo, QJo, JTo."

But then I just get completely destroyed when he has the trips because of course he does because they literally always have it and I keep giving them free money! These guys don't 3barrel bluff or checkraise or overbet with draws almost ever!

If I fix this I literally add 5bb/100 to my winrate, at least. I have to start playing to make the best decision and not to feel smart once in a while when I happen to be right.

Good luck. It took me many years to understand that being a winning poker player is all about being able to make big lay downs. Winning players sometimes fold the winning hand. I remind myself that its better to be bluffed than to be beat.

But more importantly is just avoiding situations like this with weak hands, (especially out of position). Your list of leaks is laid out very clearly. Calling.... Calling is a losing game. You should only play hands that you can bet, raise, and potentially go all in with. You got unlucky with that 2nd K on the turn. But the reason he got to see that card is because you didn't have a strong enough hand to make a 4-bet back. A8os is junk. Don't play junk. If this was a tournament and you were short stacked then A8 in sb is a solid situation to go all in with against the BB. But in a cash game there is no position that I will ever play A8os.

Some cash players think you should attack the BB anytime it comes to you unopened. I don't care for that strategy. I don't want to get into any pot where I have some mediocre hand that forces you to play meek small ball poker and give opponents cheap outs. Cash games are all about position and starting hands. You need stop playing junk, and don't play out of position unless you have a premium hand.

Thanks for the advice Phil. I'll try to remind myself that it's better to be bluffed than beat, it sounds reassuring.

Played an ungodly amount of hands today, 8497. New equity high on the ggpoker account but only barely and I had to receive a ton of rakeback to get there. Easily lost at least 3 buyins through calling in spots that are obvious folds but I'm starting to recognize them better and better and towards the end I started making some pretty good folds in spots where I would previously have called even knowing I'm beat.

hands played = 19 287 / 50 000
PnL since start = $161.26
bonuses & rakeback = $84.14
current winrate including rakeback = 8.36bb / 100

I have paid more in rake this week than I have spent on food. Lol

Okay so I figured out why the rake paid on Hand2Note did not line up with what GG is saying. It turns out you do NOT get 1 "fish point" for every $0.01 in rake paid if you are a winning player. Instead it's something like 40%. So the rake paid in Hand2Note is actually correct.

I HAVE PAID OVER $200 IN RAKE TO GGPOKER PLAYING 10NL LMAO

With rake that high I really think I have to just include the rakeback into the calculation, no way I can beat this for 10bb/100 without it lol. At least the RB is decent, just got C$23 for being the 17th most active player in the 10NLz pool in the past 24 hours.

What other poker rooms are available for you? Where are you from(if not a secret)?

Hmm, I live in northern Europe. I actually did download the pokerstars and partypoker clients but it seemed that the zoom pools were a bit dry compared to gg. Do you have any ideas of other sites? I mean it does seem I'm beating the games comfortably with rakeback so it's not a disaster but paying rake in 3bet pots that don't even see the flop does really suck lol.

See? The rake is beyond the pale. I think the best metric for your ability to beat the games is the pre-rake winrate from PokerCraft. Something between 15-20bb/100 on nl10r&c should be achievable.

And yes, fold more to big aggression.

Thought I'd play some more and immediately lost 3 buyins so I'm done for the day. Ending at a new equity high of $415.07. I only slept 5 hours last night because I stayed up to play for the leaderboard. Definitely not optimal considering Saturday is probably one of the best days to play but I'll live.

hands played = 23 671 / 50 000
PnL since start = $194.3
winrate with rakeback = 8.2bb / 100
rakeback received = $107.14

Not sleeping enough is officially one of my top 5 biggest leaks now.

That's a good measure, thanks! I'm doing ok so far according to pokercraft, roughly 15bb/100.

Today I'm folding more to big aggression than ever before. Let's see how it goes

Played my C-game today. Put in a ton of low quality hours into zoom and didn't get much out of it except giving GG a ton of money. Down 3 buyins in total.

I did learn one important thing which is that regular tables are way way way softer than zoom. I started playing them towards the end of the day and even at my C-game it felt easy. A lot of people spewing like I have never seen in zoom ever. I'm quite sure I will do the rest of the challenge on regular tables. Even if the hands / hour is lower it seems the actual $EV is insanely much higher.

hands played = 30667 / 50000
PnL since start = $168ish
rakeback and bonuses = $108.14

goal for next week is to finish the challenge playing regular tables. I'd hope to at least make my goal of 10bb/100 on these tables. I can't get H2N graphs since my free trial ran out but the ggpoker graph is decent at least. 15bb/100 for today in EV before rake.

gl with the grind op. keep the mental and you're gonna do alright in micros.

reg tables are probably a bit more spewy compared to RNC because it's infested with RB/LB grinder nits. Good thing to note though, if you haven't yet, is that the rake is even higher in reg tables vs zoom.

Thanks! I had a feeling the rake was even higher lol, I beat the games for something like 25bb/100 according to the ggpoker graphs which don't include rake but my bankroll is staying mostly the same. At least GG seems to be giving me much more rakeback points for the reg tables, I suppose because they haven't yet identified me as a winning player in them lol.

I still think reg tables are easier overall because I have seen, in only a couple thousand hands, some things I have never seen in zoom. Guys just going crazy with 2nd pair paying off 2x river jam etc.

I'm taking a couple days break now, going to come back and play my A-game for the rest of the week. I also need to buy a better computer monitor to be able to play 6 tables at the same time, 1080p 24 inch is just too small I can barely see anything lol. Cheapest 27 inch 1440p will do. Last week felt really quite bad because I played my C-game and was breakeven for most of it but I still profited $160 and increased my bankroll by like 40% in the first couple days. Hoping to maybe hit $500 this week.

got C$4.5 in bonus, total rakeback and bonuses = $112.64
