Best Drug for improving at Poker?
Hi all and Merry Christmas,
hopefully the topic of drugs and poker doesn't violate any of 2+2's rules, if it does, please
Hey, don't be an ass. At worst I am ignorant, which is hardly the worst crime in the world. Don't make assumptions about people being trolling, or whatever you're trying to imply with 'obtuse', just because you struggle to imagine things outside of your imagination.Funnily enough, re low blood sugar, I know what hypo means. I was picking you up on your words: 'there's just no t
I apologize. I guess being very different can be very shocking for both.
I've heard Dan Cates say that a common Poker error is to assume opponents think like us, and that it's also a common error in life generally.
I'm at 1500 in chess.com a tad more in lichess.
Of course dose and resistance play a big role, I never got to consuming daily and adapting, but I know people that smoked it every day and they manage to develop adaptations and processes to function well in society.
It's very likely that since I was not a regular user, I did not have resistance and I did not know how to dose, so even something as small like half a small joint absolutely destroyed me.
I didn't quit cold turkey but gradually reduced dosage, I was surprised to see that even going down to half a spliff I was having trouble with thinking and social interactions, it's kinda like dropping from NL200 to NL2 and realize I'm still a losing player, I'm like man, not only was I faded/losing, but I was several layers deep of faded/losing.
Regarding autism, I am open to the idea of the distribution of IQ deltas across the population being different, and sometimes positive on some dosages and mind configurations. But I will say that the baseline/EV is clearly negative, so whatever advantage you can get is small and can be achieved by other means, cost of opportunity.
It might take some adaptation if you haven't been sober in a while, or if you get distracted easily. Experimental use of Ritalin (with a prescription) might be useful to isolate the concentration component.
Might be worth some experiments with chess. What I did was have 2 different accounts, one high and 1 sober. So that I had different Elos. If you are systematic about it, it's a fun introspective experiment.

We can further take into account neurotypes by observing that some people naturally handle drugs differently. Some alcoholics report a feeling whereby the first time they take a sip of alcohol, at age ~7 or something, that the entire world suddenly looked brighter, better, more tolerable. We understand that predilection to certain addictions varies, often genetically. So it makes sense that different drugs hit different people differently. It's not just about tolerance - it's also about the natural variation in the balance of neurotransmitters in our brains. I've always been very take it or leave it with alcohol and other drugs. Alcohol absolutely makes me stupider, in an instantly noticeable way. About the only dumb thing I've ever done on weed, was while walking home, I noticed I had a nosebleed, and my mind instantly said 'oh, I must have AIDS', and then about 0.2 seconds later I laughed at myself for it.
We also desperately need to discuss the idea that IQ is not a reliable measure of intelligence, that intelligence is far from easily definable, that there is a meaningful sense in which even ants or plants display intelligence, that our human-centred attitudes to intelligence is.... silly, and that if my IQ did drop a few points while high, that is little more than a weak indicator of a very specific and specialised type of intelligence.
I'd also like to add that I do a lot of killer sudoku (don't bring my phone with me into the bathroom) and I can reliably use that as an indicator of how well I'm functioning at any one time. Sometimes my brain is just on fire and I see the numbers, matrix-style, and my error rate is close to 0. At other times, I feel brain fog and it's like walking through sticky treacle. I have never struggled with a killer sudoku while high, but instead can identify other factors to do with energy levels / sleep and mood as having an impact on my abilities.
I understand of course that this is all anecdotal, but that's okay - a case study saying 'X doesn't always happen' serves as a refutation to a claim 'X always happens'.
The chess experiment sounds fun. I'm wazzbot on lichess, hmu
(thanks for apology, accepted)
There’s lots of good drugs. What about the best drug cocktails? I’ll start.
Crack + pcp + weed
Bath salts + ayahuasca + DMT
Weed + kush + reefer
Having to calculate pot odds when you’re stoned just seems like a waste of weed.
Not sure I understand what you’re trying to get at, go watch any hand analysis and I’m sure you hear the words “I’m getting _:1 on a call”, “getting a good price” or something similar during the video
Maybe it’s all that weed you’ve been smoking and you’ve been too stoned to notice but everyone I know that plays poker well uses pot odds frequently.

I was being a little facetious, I know not everyone's brain works like mine. I've been calculating pot odds for so long and do mental arithmetic essentially instinctively and instantly at this point when it's just 3x+y and can instantly see how many nut and non-nut outs I have. I wouldn't describe it as matrix-like, I just don't need to worry about carrying the 1 mistakes.

Still a waste of weed.
