their entire reason for being designated is to preserve fragile parts of our ecosystem
playing through between frogs and newts reeds like a lily livered tadpole move to pad your handicap
please respect our planet for the other rest of us and take your penalty stroke

Very much this.

Also, I think it should be a free drop out of such areas to avoid any temptation.

perfectly fine with that also, just leave things that are not yours alone

Newts should be a free drop, frogs should be a penalty.

Monty Python once illegally played from an environmental area and got turned into a newt. :p

Gussie Fink-Nottle approves.

The last designated natural area I saw was 100% crabgrass.

Played Broadmoor East 71.9/138 from the 6600 yards tees, PCC+1 per GHIN.

Shot 47/51 for a differential of 19.7, moves GHIN to 20.9, lifetime low.

The course is playable but challenging and the greens have tons of break off the mountainside.

The US senior open will be there in a month. Preparations are already underway with grandstand installation and lots of spot maintenance going on all over the course. Grass was in pretty much immaculate condition and it seemed like they already had the rough up in preparation for next month. Greens rolled very pure but not super fast, pro shop said it was 10.5. Nevertheless had a couple 4-jacks whoops.

Got around the course fine, chipping cost some strokes, and had a mini meltdown on 12-15 where I scored quad, triple, double, bogey. Other than that was playing great!

Course is worth the $300 green fees but not on a regular basis I reckon.

Reluctantly, I've decided to track my handicap this year. What's the best app to use to track it? I started writing a program w/ AI, but decided against it. Is there a free app? If not, what's the least costly? I don't belong to a country club.

official ghin per season budget is probably around fitty cent
no need to be a playing member at any fancy place
just call up your local public course and ask how you can help support by tracking it there

I called 2 near me. One suggested using 18 birdies and the other kid didn't know what I was talking about 🤦. He transferred me to the golf pro though too leave a message.

was talking about an actual handicap, not some other app

At least in Canada you can just pay Golf Canada like $40 a year for an account and sign as a public player if you aren't a member somewhere, and track handicap there. I'd figure the USGA or some states must have something similar.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I asked them about a handicap index and neither place knew what I was talking about. Each time it was probably a kid who answered that was on their first day of their summer job. Thanks for the link.

anyone who actually cares about a handicap will only care about GHIN. 18Birdies might be the same or not, their language around this is very squishy.

Thanks all. GHIN is what I went with. 18 birdies only records the last 8, if I read it correctly so it's not quite as accurate. It looks like it will be well worth the $50. Pretty cool.

The Grint is a good tracking app, and you can set it up to report directly to USGA/GHIN for an actual verifiable index.

Yeah i used to use the Grint for a handicap, but there was a period of time 2 years ago where they only got a WHS number. Not surprised/it's great they got it sorted out.

The app is robust for GPS, stat tracking, etc too.

Finally got a hole in one a few weeks ago after playing golf for decades....and it was off a mishit and on punched greens. Because the ball came off the tee slightly above a line drive, at first I didnt even think it was going to make it to the green. But I was playing a prov1x and they just seem to stay in the air forever. It landed on the front portion of the green and then rolled about 20 feet straight into the cup. Even heard the clank of the pin from the tee. At first I wasnt sure it went in but after I got in the cart and got closer to the green and didnt see a ball, I knew it went in. Only downside was that I was playing as a single and nobody else around to celebrate.

Next hole was a par 5 that I birdied from off the green on the fringe so I'm -3 after 5. It's a fairly easy par 70 golf course so I thought that day would be the day I would shoot my lowest round. Of course as that thought came into my head I knew that wasnt going to happen. Still though a great round of golf and I can finally say I have a hole in one.

Congrats 👍

What does everyone use for practicing at home, just a swing net and mat? I have a Garmin R10 launch monitor and at the range I use that mainly to watch my swing. I guess all the other numbers are really nice to have, but the video is the main thing for me. It finally dawned on me I could do that outside at home.

Is there one swing net or mat that's better than another?

Based on the prices, there sure are. Holy smokes this can get expensive. I see advertisements for mats that have a "turf feel," but I am sure nothing like that really exists unless it'll allow you to take a divot.

Yes. The net return is popular.

For mats, the fiber built series is popular, as is the sig pro softy, the divot action, and the holy grail mats. Many people use a cheaper stance mat and a cutout hitting strip to save money.

I have a wittek Quattro mat at home and like it

congrats on the ace!
that last paragraph is what torments the most of us

Wondering if I could pick you brains a little.

By accident somehow I've become head of this Friday night roll up competition. Whilst it's not super serious I do want to make it fair and make sure everyone enjoys themselves.

How it works.

We base it over 20 weeks and the 7 best scores count towards your overall total and it's a 9 hole stableford. We started with our HC index's to get the initial HC's then depending how you do it will fluctuate.

Right now the system works as follows.

Under 18 points - Every point you're below 18 points you go up by 0.1 (Score 15 points go up by 0.30, Max you can go up by per week is 0.8)
18 points - Your handicap stays the same.
Over 18 points - Every point you're above 18 you go down by 0.5 (Score 21 points you go down by 1.5)

This is how its been done for years.

I was thinking about changing it because I feel some what the lower handicaps get punished a bit more. we have a wide range of men and women playing with all handicaps from 0 to 21 over 9 holes.

The way I was thinking about changing it was more category system.

Low Handicap = 4.5 or less
Medium Handicap = 4.6 - 7.9
High Handicap = 8 or above

Low

Every point below 18 = 0.2 increase (15 points = 0.6 increase)
18 points = 0 Movement
Every Point above 18 = 0.3 cut (21 points = 0.9 cut)

Medium

Every point below 18 = 0.1 increase (15 points = 0.3 increase)
18 points = 0 Movement
Every Point above 18 = 0.4 cut (21 points = 1.2 cut)

High
Every point below 18 = 0.1 increase (15 points = 0.3 increase)
18 points = 0 Movement
Every Point above 18 = 0.5 cut (21 points = 1.5 cut)

I'm on the lower end of the spectrum so I don't know if I'm being a little biased in helping myself here. I've asked people at the club and just get half assed answers that don't really mean anything. Interested to see if anyone has any responses to this.

Anyone have particular feelings or experience with modern wedges, on the topic of bounce and grinds?

For my skill level I have probably gamed my current wedges about 15 years too long. No, I'm not kidding -- rocking a pair of Nike SV Tour wedges, 52* gap with 10* bounce and a 56* sand wedge with 14* bounce, if I remember the numbers correctly. Anyways not super important other than these things are way past expiry, and I don't remember wedge grinds being such a "thing" until recently.

Going to treat myself to a pair of SM10 Vokeys, pretty locked into going 54* and 58* as my current AW in my iron set is a 50*, and I need better gapping. Have always had issues with club selection between the AW and 52*. Did a fitting with my coach, gaps and spin rates with new wedges look good.

Essentially my conundrum is whether to go 10* bounce, S-grind on both new wedges, or to go something different in the 58*. Option would be a 8* bounce M-grind instead on the 58.

Currently my 56 is what I use greenside and out of greenside bunkers, I do tend to open it up in the bunkers (I use PW for bump and runs). I pretty much never chip with my 52, I only hit 3/4 or full shots with it. But given I am adding loft in my bunker club, it could be argued it negates the need to open it up as much.

What I am not sure about is whether the versatility of the 58* 8M is better than having the same 10S in both wedges. I can see merits for both, or am I just splitting hairs and I'm not good enough for the different grind to matter. FWIW I play in Alberta so generally medium to firm conditions.
