Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis

I woke up in the middle of choking to death again; though to be accurate, it was towards the end of the process--woke up right away in a white hot panic with black spots of permanent unconsciousness swooping in across both sides of my vision.

Calm yourself, was the first important step. My lungs were soaked, steeped in the things that belonged only in my stomach, and locked up tight. My air passage was blocked and burning with bile and hydrochloric acid. No, I don't have asthma. I have a drinking problem.

Spoiler
Show

Though, now that I think about it, is that inhaler thing any good? Maybe I'll try a hit sometime, just to see.

This was last Friday, just a few hours after I'd quit my office job of twelve years to take a shot at playing poker for a living out West in Nevada. This will not be my first shot at gambling for a living; although I have only tried something like this once before, many years ago.

Around the turn of the century I quit college most of the way through my senior year and I moved out to Las Vegas for 8 years. My experiences were somewhat of interest: rampant drunkenness, a stolen lab animal, solid card counting, North Korean meth, time spent with Mormons, advantage slot grinding, a cowardly pass on an FBI Most Wanted bounty, facing contempt of court charges, and dressing up as Albus Dumbledore. You can find that in my BBV thread.

https://forumserver.twoplustwo.c... .

That thread held up pretty well in BBV, which is not nothing.

Starting meditative relaxation can be problematic when you're dying from choking on your own puke. I sat up straight, blind from the black splotches that had slapped away the weak light of the kitchen stove. I dropped my shoulders, relaxed my chest and upper arms, and then, projecting calm with all my might, I tried my throat. I pictured my lungs and throat opening up just a tiny passage, for just a little air to go by--something to get me started. And they did, untethering just the smallest little rivulet of air, and it made the most terrifying sound as it went through. It always does.

Whatever you've heard from actors pretending to gasp after being choked, the reality is worse. At least no one was with me this time. When that's been the case, the other person has invariably freaked the **** out when they've heard my gasping and choking routine, which only adds the burden of myself having to reassure them through nodding and non-frantic gestures, so that they won't call 911, as I hate the idea of calling the cops.

April 13th of this year was 14 months without me having a drink. During that long stretch I had honestly forgotten why I'd quit. That's right, I had completely purged from my recall the years of nighttime memories of myself almost choking to death, this happening once or twice every couple of weeks on average. Now, the terrifying night wakeups didn't happen even once during the 14 dry months. But 3 weeks back into drinking--oh yeah--there was that thing, wasn't there?.

Now, there was something else I'd forgotten about. And that's the Double Tap. The Double Tap happens when I don't force my drunk and tired and traumatized self to remain awake for a good two or three hours after a choking incident. If I fall back asleep before then, I wake up choking to death all over again. And sure enough, that happened last Friday, and I had to save myself again.

So on Saturday I jumped back on the waggy, and Cinco de Mayo is now my new anniversary date, and that's really enough about drinking. I'm not here to write about that business. I should have been done with it; and now I am.

My flight leaves for Reno in a few hours, and I'll be out there for the next 3 weeks scouting out the live poker games in the city. If I like it, that's where I'm moving to.

I think he lived there for a while, but with all his traveling, I'm not sure it's still the case.

That being said, I think he wrote many times that he was born and raised in Quebec.

SJ have you heard about the MGM properties at least in Vegas area have sent out notifications pushing back on advantage slot players. Any rumblings at Springfield?

This is coming from multiple sources.

You've got to visit Europe first! 😡

I've been to Hanover, Germany for a machine tool show. I don't believe it to be the most exciting city in Europe, seemed like the equivalent of the US's Cincinnati or Cleveland. But we did go to Berlin twice, and that was fun. Quaffing one-liter flagons of fresh Paulaner Oktoberfest beer and eating hot pretzels and wiener schnitzel was the schizznet.

But yeah, the rest of Europe beckons. If I ever hit the Big Score, a casino tour of Europe will happen.

I haven't received any nastygrams via email yet, and they're still sending me promo stuff and I'm accumulating tier points.

I'm sure they'll catch up to me sooner rather than later; but you know, I don't actually wrack up that many slot tier points, so losing them wouldn't be a huge disaster.

Year to date so far, I've only accumulated $87 worth of slot points. A whale could ring that up in 2-3 hours. My card is only at Pearl Tier, which is second to lowest out of 5 levels, and I may not even make Pearl Tier again this year. I only made it last year thanks to that one huge high-limit Treasure Box play where I was one spin away from losing my $1500 nut, and also from misplaying Wheel of Fortune High Roller a few times and losing heaps on that, and now the WoFHR machines are all gone from the MGM, so I can't even make correct plays on that.

Aside from those two titles, most advantage slot plays, and all advantage VP plays are over and done within a few spins or hands. The EV is either collected quickly or it goes away quickly. At MGM Springfield, the only remaining exceptions where long plays are sometimes necessary are Hexbreak3r, Rich Little Piggies, and Buffalo Ascension, and the Asian syndicate has all of those machines so locked down that I almost never find plays on them. On top of all that, video poker play yields a paltry number of tier points. The casinos know that many VP regs are serious addicts, and that they'd still play on to the bitter end even if they got zero tier points out of it.

Yesterday was another test of my mettle.

I sat down and lost $200 in the first orbit, in 3 bad hands. Then I lost more. Then this hand came up.

$400 effective stacks. I open T9 from EP for $10. MP and BTN call.

Pot ($33) - 3 players

Flop: AKQ

Good flop for my EP opening range, flush draw and gutshot draw, and I partially block the JT straight. I make it $20. MP calls, BTN folds.

Pot ($73) - heads up

Turn: 6

Blank. Time for another barrel, and hopefully I'll improve. I bet $45 and MP calls.

Pot ($163) - heads up

River: 6 brick city. Ouchies. I can't beat anything aside from a low flush draw.

If he had something really good, I would have heard from him by the turn. A straight or set would have been afraid of the flush draw and raised the flop or turn. Two pair would have probably raised the flop with the third player still left to act.

I have to bluff if I want to win. I bet $75 and he tank calls with KJ, a very pretty hand on the flop and turn, but just second pair medium kicker calling 3 chunky barrels from an EP opener on the river. I may not have made it chunky enough. I now believe that a hundo on the river might have done the trick. But that might be results-oriented. If the $75 had worked, I would have been a shark.

I picked up and left, down $400+. One hour is all I played. Was I lucky to not see a third spade on that board and possibly lose my entire stack? Yes. Did I appreciate that in the moment? Not in the least.

My security guard conscience yammered at me the entire way home. Sure, I could come back and finish the session on Friday (i.e. today), but that would mean having to work Fri., Sat., Sun. and Mon. all in a row.

I decompressed, had dinner, and I drove back for the evening and Thursday night Football. Once again, I whiffed on the promo, but I did claw back some of the loss.

At the very end of the evening, I did one more slot sweep, and found myself down $50 for the day on the slots. Ah well, can't win every time on them machines.

I got down to one machine left: a high-limit VP rig, and on it I found a couple of extremely rare plays. Someone had left multiplier hands on the $2, 5-play denomination of Double Double Bonus, the one that costs $50 per play. I made a couple of modest hands on that, and just like that, I was just about even for the night.

MGM Springfield $1/$2 poker: 5 hours
(-$249.00)
MGM Springfield Slots: 3 hours
+$248.73

Running Poker Total from Sept. 2024: 77 hours, +$107.00.00
Running Slot Total from Sept. 2024: 33 hours, +$2180.63

Total from Sept. 2024: 110 hours, +$2287.63

I'm off to work again. I started working on the Helen/Providence TR, but it's far from done. I have Tuesday and Wednesday off, so we'll see.

SJ and Helen's Day Out: Part I

Helen came from her native Taiwan to the USA last week to visit a trade show in Chicago, and then to visit with me here in Massachusetts. For the Massachusetts leg of the trip, she chose a hotel in Foxborough, a town 90 minutes away from me that provides nothing interesting to tourists who are not rabid New England Patriots fans, which Helen is not.

Her hotel in Foxborough was 45 minutes away from both Boston, MA and Providence, RI. Out of those two cities, Helen chose Providence to be the one she wanted to visit.

I was going to suggest that we go to Boston, but then I realized that I have lived most of my life within 50 miles (80 km) of Providence, but I've never once visited it.

If you do your homework, you'll find that every city has at least a few areas of interest within it. Helen sent me an itinerary with these items.

(1) Rhode Island State House
(2) Providence Athenaeum
(3) Brown University
(4) Wrentham Village Premium Outlets

The Rhode Island State House? Really?

I searched through Reddit threads for things to do in Providence, and the Athenaeum was mentioned as being a very old, continuously active library, so that was a possibility. Near to that, but not on her list, is the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, which is highly regarded in the Reddit threads, so I decided on those two as a starting point.

Just before I left on the 90 minute drive to pick up Helen, I texted her this:

All right, Helen. I'm heading your way now. I'll be driving so I won't be able to use my phone until I arrive. See you soon!

I wanted to avoid another spot like the one a few days ago where Helen called me and texted me more than a dozen times while I was in the shower.

Halfway through the drive, my phone started going off, then the text alerts began, then the phone and text alerts alternated. I stopped at a rest area an confirmed that my previous text had been ignored.

Here is where I wanted to quote to you a certain text from Helen, but she has deleted it. The gist of it was that her Uber driver was talking on his phone in a foreign language (i.e. not English) and that that scared her, and that she didn't like to take Ubers because the drivers were all Black men or foreigners. The irony of her being scared of foreigners was apparently lost on her.

I fought with myself for a good three minutes about whether or not to just turn around and go home and ghost her forever after, but I've been working very hard on breaking my habit of ragequitting from challenging scenarios, so I drove on.

Look, some form of bigotry and/or racism is alive and well in every country on Earth. We spent our first 96,000 or so years as a species living in isolated, fearful tribes, where people who didn't look or speak like us were legitimately dangerous. It's hard to get that deeply embedded instinctual fear out of our systems in only 4000 years or so.

But we can at least make a ****ing effort.

One of he things with Helen—I found this out soon afterwards to my dismay—is that for the past year or so she's been faithfully watching American right-wing cable news channels, and their ideas have captured her imagination.

I don't want to talk politics here. That always enshittifies any non-political thread. Let's just say that I later found it tiresome having to respond to Helen's occasional canned right-wing talking points disguised as questions about the USA.

When I got to the hotel, Helen was at the check-in desk, arguing about a $20 refundable deposit on the room. I tried to give her a friendly hug, but she grabbed my arms and blocked me.

Publicly rejected by someone I wasn't interested in. Check. Taiwanese are not huggers; I should have remembered that, except that I've gotten drunk with a few who were.

Off we went on the 45 minute drive to lovely Providence, RI. I had researched and found the highest-rated parking garage downtown, where it's only $10 all day long, right near the Rhode Island School of Design (henceforth RISD).

I got us parked, and Helen realized that she had left her purse at the hotel. She wanted me to drive back to the hotel to get it.

Spoiler
Show

The RISD campus is very pleasantly laid out, like many city colleges, and I enjoyed the walk through it. Helen asked me why there were so many beautiful American women around. I deadpanned that I hadn't noticed, but that the non-scholarship students at RISD have the means to ensure good health, good cosmetics, elective surgical alterations, top-notch dental work, and fine clothes.

She didn't buy that. I don't know why she didn't, exactly, because I can only understand about one third of what she says. Helen's knowledge of English is excellent; she has a master's degree in teaching English, but her accent is tough, and she speaks very softly, and she won't speak louder, even when prompted several times.

We walked to the Athenaeum library and I paid the $10 suggested donation for the two of us to go in. It was hot, no AC, and there were just books and faux-marble busts of literary figures; which is good enough for me, but Helen wanted to leave within literally one minute. I was fine with that; I don't mind throwing a little money at libraries.

All right. I have to head to work. I'll have to make this a Part 1 of 2 and finish it eventually.

Part 1 of 2? I was hoping for 5 parts. Oh well. Popcorn gets stuck in my teeth anyway.

Yeah, well, I'm no George Clooney, either. The point is that we're not compatible, and it's nobody's fault. The tragedy is that the person who is smitten is unable to see it that way.

It's a pretty common spot, but it's never easy to deal with.

Speaking of workout Suited, do you exercise outside of the aforementioned walks you take??? My recommendation : even something as little as 20 minutes of exercise before you head out to the casino, does absolute wonders for energy levels/concentration throughout your 8-10h sessions. Disclaimer :

That's good advice, Dubnjoy000; however, I don't really enjoy exercise, and as I've mentioned before, I only have one security guard to get me in the habit of doing things that I don't like to do. For the next few months, he'll be working on getting me to work 40 hours a week. After that rut is filled in, then it will be time to look at breaking the inactivity habit.

I am not a lucky man; never have been, but on Monday I got to the point where my shoulders were drooping every time I flopped a set (note to self: possible tell to address later), which was 3 times during that session. I lost heaps on all 3 sets.

I will not post the running tally again until my poker results swing back into the positive. Who knows how long that will be? The only way to get back to that point is to return to the tables.

I'll be back at it again tomorrow.

When I enter run-bad hell, I tell myself that I can't try to win, I can only try to play correctly. But three dead sets may mean you need to discuss your life with a theologian.

most taiwanese i know are pretty indifferent about re-unification with the mainland, in fact, a lot of polling indicates that while the majority prefer maintaining the status quo - if given the choice between unification or not (assuming it happened without any hitches which is a big assumption hence why they prefer the status quo) they are pretty evenly split between rejoining china or declaring they are not china - fun fact, taiwan is not the actual name, just what we call it to avoid confusion, the actual name is "republic of china"

they are also pretty wealthy and as shown by her vacationing in the usa she's obviously not busto so there's none of that hunger green card incentive

so i'm guessing the most likely factor is she's too old for a local to consider for marriage and too picky to marry a local for whom she's not too old - hence why she's going after you

you may want to read this - my guess is this is the real reason but it's easier for her to tell you about the chinese sword of damocles instead of "i'm too old for someone from taiwan to consider marrying me"

Taiwan is an interesting place, but England's claims to reunification with Ireland are much much stronger than China's claims on Formosa.
