That’s disappointing to hear. I was anxious to visit Laughlin and play poker. I guess it’s not a great retirement destination if my plan is to play poker everyday.

maybe 20 years ago it was... marginal.
today, it is depressing.

I played in Laughlin (Riverside) on T-Day last, it was fine. Trends older, for sure. I would not retire to Laughlin or the Az side (Parker? Bullhead City?) just for proximity to Laughlin. I'm hoping Reno is a viable solution, myself, for the retirement thing.

If you like Limit and NL Hold em The Riverside has what you want. I live in Laughlin but spend the hot months in NY so not sure how much it slows down from June to September. Research it but you can retire to Vegas as well.

Thanks. I was attracted to the lower cost of living and low crime in the Laughlin area compared to other cities/states with live poker. I live in FL now and we have plenty of poker but this area is getting way too expensive. Reno and Vegas are interesting but I think they are fairly expensive, or at least a lot more than they were years ago.

Any other suggestions for US cities/areas with live poker that have relatively cheap rentals and lower crime rates?

Reno is very expensive compared to Laughlin.

No one moves to Laughlin for poker... similarly, Reno.

On a side note, the wife and I spent this past weekend in Laughlin. Usually we'll do the occasional weekend getaway in Mesquite, but I guess because of the Final Four we couldn't get a free room out there so we used some Caesars freebies and stayed three nights at Harrah's Laughlin.

On Sunday we took the river taxi from Harrahs to the Riverside, then lazily walked the way back to Harrah's. I was shocked at just how busy Riverside was. Everything about it seemed to be jumping at 2 PM on a Sunday. The Poker room at Harrah's Laughlin never seemed to get more than 2-3 games going while we were there, and was probably one or fewer Sunday afternoon. The Riverside had maybe 8+ games going? Lots of blue chip games, which I took to be 3-6 or 4-8 limit. At least one of those was an Omaha game. But I did see at least 2 red chip games.
Note that I didn't actually walk in to the poker room there, just looked from the outside.

Overall though, I couldn't get over how much busier the Riverside was than any of the other Laughlin properties.

well... it's been that way for a long time. it is the first property into town.

u could check out Boulder City, NV. It is a detached city from Las Vegas and doesn't have the same crime problems (i.e. a lower crime rate)

it is about an hour drive to Laughlin and 30 minutes to an hour drive to the LV Strip depending on what time of day you are driving.

I've spent some time in urban Florida and the traffic is brutal. So an hour drive might not seem so bad (?)

I've never played at the Riverside but I've walked by, including recently, and their poker room is always crowded. Harrah's not so much. FWIW Harrah's looks like a modern poker room and Riverside looks like a 1970s relic (which it is).

Anyways, maybe it is worth a trip here to check out if you have the means and are serious.

Do any roads/highways in Nevada have tolls? When renting a car there, is it best to buy the ez pass toll payer thingie from the rental car agency or just bring coins and dollar bills for tolls?

Most of the rental car companies are pretty reasonable with the tolls now. Don't pay extra for the ezpass. You can just drive through toll scanners and they will send you a bill and the car company will tack on ~$5 a day.

Edit: Damn, that's nice there's no toll roads in NV or AZ. Every damned road they're building in Texas now is a toll road and most of them are the variable rate, so they really gouge you during congested times.

Yeah, that's pretty common nowdays. Though I haven't seen anything as exorbitant as mark's example.

I don't get it. Get your **** together, and leave five minutes earlier. Or take public transit. Or, even better, don't be in such a hurry when you're going to work.

seattle area has horrendous traffic because they turn the hov lanes into fee based during high traffic

so during lowest traffic it's a 3 lane highway with lanes open to all
during non peak it's 2 lane highway with a completely unused hov lane because nobody has 2+ in their car
during peak it's a congested 2 lane highway with a very empty hov lane because even if you have 2+ in your car it now comes with an additional fee which is pretty outlandish

so it just constricts and nukes any chance of efficient driving where what is normally a 20 minute drive is regularly 1 hour or longer unless of course you are willing to spend $15 a day in tolls, then you are fine

Maybe you are a poker player who only makes $7.62 an hour and yes then it isn’t worth the $15 for you- please keep sitting in the traffic. This way the $15 lane is nice and open for those providing value to society- ya know the people who’s time is actually worth something
