Hmmm - no bourbon thread?
my body really isn't recovering as well as it used to after scotch, so I've started dipping my toe into Bourbon waters. It's very early days, but so far I've not only enjoyed my dalliances but I've woken up a lot less dusty.
So I'm after recommendations. My standard $$ range for scotch is $70-110 Aus (which in Oz terms is Glenlivet 12 up to Aberlour/Balvenie 12), so think along similar price lines.
To date, my favourite of the ones I've tried is clearly Woodford Reserve. A clear second is Buffalo Trace and a distant third was the Wild Turkey Longbranch.
where should I go next?
Another Costco purchase. Never paid more than $100 for a bottle and now skipped straight to $200 [emoji1787] I wasn’t going to pull the trigger but it was $50 cheaper than Total Wine and $40 cheaper than the liquor store that has “everything”
After trying most all bourbons on and off during the last 50 years or so, and my liver shows it, I've settled on just regular Jack Daniels now. After all, if Frank Sinatra called it 'the nectar of the Gods' who am I to argue? Plus, with my rapidly decreasing retirement fund (thanks Biden!), can't afford to become a booze snob.
I have a low bar, my wife is not a beauty queen, drive a pickup truck, dogs are mongrels, wear steel toed boots and my socks don't match.
it is bothering my OCD, so I'll pour me some nectar of the Gods.

Speaking of Irish/Bourbon crossovers, I got a bottle of this for Christmas:
Remarkably yummy. Keeps switching back and forth from tasting like a bourbon or an Irish, never really a mix of the two.

The big box liquor store by me apparently doesn’t put Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare on the shelves. You have to ask and there is a limit of 1 per customer.
I think that will change fairly soon. Buffalo Trace spent exorbitant amounts of money to essentially double their production. We are already seeing a dramatic down turn in demand, both in stores and in the secondary markets.
Green River is a good option that I personally think is better than ER or BT and is a shelfer in available markets.
The owner at my main store gave me a Sagamore 9 year Rye for Christmas and its really good. Rich and complex with the broad spectrum of sweet and spicy. Surprisingly different from the 8 year. Hes got a couple of Makers Mark Cellar Aged waiting for me but I'll probably just sell those.

Green River has a base straight bourbon and wheated bourbon at about 30-35$ a bottle. Makers is wheated and BT/ER are straight bourbons.
I think they make great old fashioned, but pretty much every bourbon that is good straight is good in an old fashion
