It seems like there's a lot of conflict and unhappiness in the world these days. It gets me down. One of the few things

I would never let any dog eyeball me or my meal like that. Exert some dominance!

Those ears are laid down in pleading mode; not laid back in attack mode. Blacklab is fine.

Personally, I can tolerate pleading mode up only to a certain (and ever-changing) point before I go into attack mode myself.

I'm with nhlnut. Can't stand the begging. My mom has 2 dogs that come and sit under the table and poke your legs with their front paws while you're eating.

The view when I eat something while sitting on the couch

that is precisely the scene that plays out in my home also... and as my beloved family members completely rely of me, I would NEVER excerpt 'Dominance' when it comes to something as simple as Chow.
I love my family, and my Canines are my family... and I say this as someone that is a natural born mean mutha fuka and that lives a quite ridged and structured lifestyle.

My dog Elsa passed away a few months ago at 15. She had a long good life.

RIP Elsa
so sorry for you and the family muttiah

RIP Elsa

Godspeed Elsa... rest assured, that all dogs go to Heaven.

A eulogy for Elsa would be cool

Thanks folks. Haha a eulogy I can give it a go. We got Elsa from Amish breeders in Canada. We visited several places these people seemed like good people and farmers and it didn’t seem like a puppy mill. On the day she came home at the end fifth 45 min drive she proceeded to vomit inside our car[emoji38]

Her mom was the sweetest Australian Shepard. Dad was a goofy full size poodle. Elsa was very high energy when younger and didn’t slow down until age 8 or so. She could run like a greyhound and never saw her lose a game of chase. She was super good motivated. Once she ate a whole ball of raw pizza dough and vet needed to induce vomiting.

In 2014 we moved from Canada to the Bay Area. So Elsa got to spend the last 11 years of her life in amazing weather as she loved the outdoors. She did miss the snow though . I used to walk her on the frozen Rideau canal during Ottawa winters.

Elsa lived with my ex wife after we separated in 2020. I would still dog sit from time to time. During the last 6 months of her life my ex was going to school snd working so Elsa spend many weeks and weekends at my place.

Earlier this year she started losing weight and stopped eating. She also had respiratory issues and needed to periodically walk around at night to reduce pressure on her lungs. Vet was surprised she had lived so long and overall she was healthy and mobile. She had arthritis and her back legs were too weak to climb stairs at the end. When she stopped eating I think she was telling us she was done. Her deteriorating health was causing my ex a lot of stress and anxiety. We had the vet visit the home and she died comfortably surrounded by her family.

Elsa the day before she died. We spent the afternoon at the park and went to lunch outside with her.

Perfect... that's was lovely.
Thank you for sharing, and in doing so, I hope we can ease the burden of grief.

Thanks for suggesting it! Felt unexpectedly therapeutic when finished 😀

yes, that was beautiful mutt
my hunch is you may revisit it in the future

Glad you found this thread, muttiah. Sincerest sympathy to you. Very nice story, also glad to hear it helped in some way.

could be the same length, but that is much wider

But are you SURE your cat doesn't kill birds? Yeah. I'm sure.

When your Shepherd is about to round the corner and see her opportunity to have a chase with a deer.

Are you SURE the cat isn't giving you the 'You're interrupting my lunch look?

Great Pic

I'd still be checking feces for feathers

I built a catio for the cats quite a few years ago and have never really had an issue with birds, but 2 years ago within a span of a month my cat somehow tricked a wren, a brown thrasher, and a squirrel into coming close enough to be introduced to death. She's quite the lizard hunter too.
