Fun Player's Guide to the Galaxy
Well let's see.... I'm here, but not quite sure what I'm doing here.
I mean I don't feel drunk.
I thought 7/9 would be a fitting date to mark the start point of whatever this will be. 79 being my favorite hand and all. Yes one thing you should know about fun players is that we all have our favorite hand. Usually it ties back to some big pot you won from playing badly and running godly. For me that hand is 7♠9♠
I guess the purpose of this thread is to provide me an outlet to post random updates related to poker.
I haven't played a whole lot in recent years due to time constraints. Live poker is just so time consuming. But I have managed to fit in 1 or 2 tourneys a year and the occassional cash session once a month or so. Not much to write home about. I min cashed some $1100 event last summer and am up a fair amount in the limited cash I've played.
I also play some online, but options for Americans are pretty crappy. I mostly play 100NL 6 max on ignition and some of their tourneys once in awhile. I recently checked out Bet Online and have dabbled in 50NL 6max. The player pool is super small. There seems to be like maybe 10 regs and a handful of random weaker players. At peak hrs there are maybe 4 tables going. I play without a HUD so I'm only 1 or 2 tabling anyways.
I plan on playing the Monster Stack again next year, but will also schedule time so I can play the ME as well. It would be nice to subsidize that with my cash play. So I guess the main goal/challenge is to make $11,500 within about 150hrs of play.
And the side quest will be to make a good showing in the tourneys.
As for where my game is at: Though I've played relatively little, I've actually studied quite a bit. My thoughts on the game in both cash and tournaments has changed quite dramatically over the last few years. I feel my tournament fundamentals have become more solid, but I still find myself Selbsting off my stack near every money bubble. This is one thing I've never bothered to fix. I think it's time now to stop that and see what it does for my results.
For this month I can probably fit in one cash session and I will also be playing a $1650 at the end of the month.
For cash I typically play 2/5 and 5/10.

Pretty frustrating run the past week. Have lost almost every 80/20 70/30 and obviously all the 50/50s.
On top of every time I have a set and they have a flush draw they get there and the board never pairs and then when I'm the one w/ a flush or a straight it pairs every single time. Bad combo.

To start the session I ran AK into AA 5 times in the first 700 hands. Seems like a lot.
Of course I should have folded the turn the call is terrible, but I was tilted/frustrated by this point in the session after losing every hand all day. This was the last hand of the session and I just had to log off because clearly I was punting at this point. At least I got that right.

Not really worth it imo unless you're just practicing and aren't necessarily trying to win, are trying to grind out rewards and/or are just completely numb to the swings, because they can be gnarly. I remember GazzyB once saying that an 8bi loss at zoom is just a normal start to the day (which he may have exaggerated a bit for comedic effect but the general idea is true at least)
As I'm sure you can probably tell if you've put in a bit of volume in the 25b pool, most players there are pretty bad (even many players one might consider to be regs are breakeven at best, and even those with high spots on the beast leaderboard aren't necessarily all that good either), but there are few spewy whales. The actual fish are mostly players who understand basic stuff like rough opening and IP/SB 3bet ranges and good hands to cbet flops with, so they're not going to be bleeding all over the place. The edges are gonna be pretty small relative to a pool where there are a lot of really bad players
But I agree with taking a break. Seems like you've been running pretty bad for sure, but focusing on how unlucky you are doesn't do anything to help you. Take a break, a few days to focus on your personal life or things you enjoy, then do extra studying and review to make sure you're not unnecessarily spewing, then get back into it
You seem solid technically for sure imo, but mental game is super important. It was something I neglected for a long time (and mine was probably way worse than yours), and my results improved a ton once it became a serious focus for me. I also started table selecting super hard and avoiding putting most of my volume in fast fold formats. Maintaining a higher winrate can also go a long way to help mental game since you won't have as many swings. Not that you necessarily need to follow that approach to do well, but I think it's at least something to consider if mental game is a challenge for you, at least as present. Best of luck OP
