1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Well done, but you could have held off a week or so! LOL. (I've been in training the past couple of days, so haven't been on 2+2.)

Congrats

Thanks ya’ll. 😀

Couldn’t have done it without the support from everyone!

Just as soon as I finish the challenge I run bad lol…not terrible but I got bluffed off the best hand in an almost dry side pot in a pretty big pot, then lost mid set to a wrap, then flopped nut straight and two pair and got it in against same straight with nfd against aggro dude and lost, then made a come back with AJT96ds but lost AA544ds. Stuck a couple grand right now.

Staged a stellar comeback, won around $600 at plo from stuck $3k. It was getting very late (early) and I want to keep a semblance of a sleep schedule so I booked the small win and called it a long night. dsAA helped a lot.

Nice comeback!

Good start today, took a coffee break and came back and lost a couple pots KK to A4 on AAK4 against a short stack whose chips are definitely in play. Reminded myself how well I am doing regardless.

Ran AT into AA in a 3! pot spr 1 AT5 my back doors, won 87654ds all in pre to AA, won nut straight bdfd bd boat draw to wrap and same straight making my flush, won nfd nut open ender to colluder husband’s top set. Wrapping it up on another W.

Congrats you're a living legend!

Congrats you're a living legend!

You’re too kind. I look forward to our coaching session! Congrats on nailing the guess for the challenge!

Mid-session update: lost a couple AAs early on, lost top and bottom pair and aces to top two against a short stack, but then got a big double with KQ998 against presumably AA on gin flop JT7r and held getting the rest in on the flop. Winning right now.

Losing some at big games tonight, game is still pretty good so grinding later than usual until the big action quits. KJT98ds all in lost, biding my time..pretty card dead.

Played as long as I reasonably could until I started misreading my hands from exhaustion, almost mucked the winner in a $100 waterfall for time, won an AA and a wrap + nfd before booking a decent win.

Late rise today but plenty of sleep importantly (yesterday I cheated a little and only got 7 hours…was pretty miserable). Latte time now…might do a poker lab later with some friends from the mixed game.

Time chatting poker was a fun change of pace, then left for a quick session. Won a dsAAQ86 all in pre multi-way, flopped quads with KK and got a little value out of AA. Lost KKTT2ds to maniac and going to call it a short session soon hopefully up a decent profit.

Please describe the waterfall. My guesses are either multiple boards or revealing one card at a time until the current best hand is beaten or everyone has revealed their cards.

Some people flip them all up at once, some wait for the runout, some do one or two cards. We weren't doing one card at a time, probably to save time. There are side bets too, the other night they were doing $1,000 for the actual nuts (on 99843 but be quad 9s not just 98) and $500 for the best hand among the side bettors. I had T4332 once and the runout was A45T4 and saw my neighbor had K4 and I almost mucked until I realized I filled up with my T. There were a lot of jokes about nutting on people's faces during the waterfall since you needed the nuts to scoop the biggest side bet.

Dinner with family, then was sad to see the plo games tonight were quite below average in quality so it’s gonna be a little 2/5 and mix tonight unless the plo heats up and some of the nits are replaced with whales.

Mix went so-so, got a sugar high from my iced coffee for which I asked the waitress no sugar…played a hand I shouldn’t have in 2-7 a little hyped up, then lost in big o with two pair open ender bdnfd meh low draw. Back to plo where games look better now down a little.

Stopping working was a great decision. Now that all my energy is focused on one thing I’m excelling at it. Been great for the bottom line and my mental and physical health! Lattes extra sleep last night, feeling good.

Last night PLO ended well, won nut straight straight redraw to wrap and fd and nfd for side pot, was going to quit but played an extra hour when an apparently big donor joined the game, stacked him twice he quit and so did I. Both times with nuts, top two nfd and top boat.

Now that the BR challenge is over I am looking for ways to keep the blog fresh. If anyone has ideas let me know. Or if you want to ask me anything that is fine too!

Mid session update…up a few hundo, table got slow and better game was a couple tables down so I table changed. Left my old Indian friend who is a little slow but funny mannerisms, betting $5 into a $300 pot for example. Left annoying hold ‘em player who asked old Indian man to show his hand to the entire table when he exposed it to me (I had folded) and said it wasn’t fair to give the best player more info, and also gave Indian man a hard time for touching my shoulder after he beat me…lord. Happy to be grinding at this game instead now.

Actually, pretty happy to be around a lot of these characters. I fit right in to the crazy. When I was working and playing I wasn’t very happy doing either.

If you actually think about improving the viewing experience of this blog (you shouldnt... Cause its very nice, as it is), i think playing more mixed games is the way to go.
I dont know how new games like badeucy etc play, but regarding 8game or horse, there are lots of ABC players and worse in the games. Especially high low games are usually very soft.

Maybe post some in depth hand histories whenever you scoop a huge pot, or lose one.

Id like that.
And for 8game, i might sometimes have good advice.

I used pen and paper to analyze 2-7 no limit single draw, for example, to know exact odds of dealt seven low, 8 low etc for preflop, went from there, and shipped my first hundred dollar tourney i played.

Just put in some work for the usual suspects (games) in your area, and youll soon crush them like 5card.
Just do it. The gained confidence will get you further than you could imagine, not to mention the actual technical edges you gain by doing smth like that...

Only raise first in needs to be somewhat close to GTOish, the later streets just need an exploitative approach in most games, in my experience.

Oh... And regarding caffeine, you should wait at least an hour after waking up before having any caffeine. And get +5 minutes of day-light before first coffee, too.

Helps to avoid crashing, and your body will also get to sleep better 16 hours after first day-light, due to better melatonin produduction and whatevs

I would post more mixed game hand histories except that would involve playing much more and I am not as good at the mix as plo, so my bottom line would suffer for sure. I’ll probably keep playing from time to time when the game looks good but that’s about it.

Thanks for the lifestyle advice!

Last night was an extremely slow uneventful session, folded a TON, my three aces got cracked, at least got one bluff through against the serial bluffer TT988 on 68935, c/r all in river he folded what he claimed was a small straight. Broke about even on the day.

Session going fine so far, played 10/10/50 for a little in a mediocre game and lost AKJ98ds all in pre to bad QQ and open ender Q-flush draw and pair to a better draw. At least I won a couple AAs. Smaller game going much better so far.

Lost a couple AAs and correctly folded dsKK and would have won, then won A9865ds to ?? on 942r, V bet I raised flop, perfect 3 on the turn and I held. Started getting tired so booked the win and a fine end to the month.

Sorta slow session so far, won top set JJ to two pair and top boat KK to AA and an underfull, otherwise pretty card dead just waiting for another good spot.

I like how you write this thread, so I hope you keep it up.

Thank you. And so I shall.

I lost a couple KKs pre, but ran well elsewhere and booked a tidy $2.4k profit on the first session of the new month. Two short stacks at our table kept min buying and punting, it was a sight to see. They both hit a gutter on me once, one time a 2-outter when I had top set and two of his 7s and the other time with a 2-outter when I had nfd and two pair and he hit one of the only off-suit Qs left What donks!
