1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
Nye shoutout dumbo. Your thread entertains for sure. Wish you well in 2024!
My thoughts on edges in hold em versus plo…from a different thread on the same topic:
I disagree about less edge as a pro in plo, having played a ton of plo and hold 'em. Sure, your best hands don't always have as much equity when called in all in situations preflop compared to hold 'em, but postflop edges are still huge since the bad hands Vs play will flop second best and will be drawing poorly against your stronger range. Also, there are a lot of bluffing opportunities like in hold 'em that allow you to win pots without showdown and you have more information to use with 4 or 5 cards as opposed to just two.
You might have 55-65% equity heads up and all in as a favorite in plo, but upon closer inspection, that's really not that far off from a lot of flips you see in hold 'em as well - AK/pocket pair, AK/unpaired, AQ/KJ etc. Sure you won't have 80% as when you cooler someone AA v. KK but those spots even out in the long run anyway.
When you become good enough you can actually play more hands profitably than you could in hold 'em imo. There are just far fewer hands in hold 'em, and even fewer +EV ones. I think that's where the bigger edge derives from in plo, is the sheer number of playable hands.
Edit: small sample, but today alone I played five hands in plo in an hour compared to two in hold em.
Slow day so far, some small pots lost at 5/T raising and whiffing then back to plo where won a KK ai pre, but not before losing an AA oesd nfd to straight, now about even at plo now and down a little at hold ‘em for a miniscule loss to start the year.
From game nightÂ…what do you meme:

Yeah playing different places can feel weird, like if the people in Cheers went to a different bar
I found your thread last week And started all the way back in 2018! Keep killing it! Looking to learn about PLO 5. Would you say the books you mentioned way back in the thread are still a good choice, or is there a better one now?

Those are still fine for four card as a starting point. There are a lot of adjustments for plo5 though like playing certain AA. Thank you very much and gl to you!
Last night ended up quitting plo and going back to 2/5 where we were soon graced with the presence of a maniac with $10,000 cash in his pocket on New Year's day (thank you poker gods!). He reloaded a lot. I 3! him big and he always called, like he'd open to $50 and I would make it $250 or some other nonsense. We put the straddle on on my suggestion. I got him for a couple thousand, last one was pretty sick as he actually had it this time, KK on Q-high flop in 3! pot against my AQ, A otr though. He quit after this one.
Ended up getting unstuck from plo and a short 5/T sesh and winning a little too, booking a small W on day one of 2024. Slept a long time last night and had nature dreams, African wildlife and black bears on the same expanse. Pretty wild.
I wrote a 20-minute long post on 2023 in review and 2024 outlook and was logged out...lol.
Basically, great 2023, 2024 keep up the good things like routine and volume, positive table presence, game selection, and getting into big games. And be nice but play ruthlessly.
Cheers!
Got to maryland live early for 5/5 only to find out the game didnÂ’t start until 7pm, but played some 2/2 losing top set against mid set and a third player with wrap nfd and missing my own wrap nfd as well. Left for big o for some fun and quiet enjoyment before the big game (also didnÂ’t want to be stuck too much as I only brought so much with me). Got 7/8th of a big pot with nut low and a flush in a capped pot pre AKJT3ds.
Now grabbing dinner. Since I have a few minutes IÂ’ll elaborate on my year in review post.
It was pretty awesome to over double my annual total profit compared to last year even while learning a new poker variant at sometimes ill-advisedly high stakes. I also traveled a couple times and played bigger games with a bunch of unknowns and realized the value of a consistent player pool where I have long-term reads on players.
I improved my table presence immensely and donÂ’t really care about the money as much as I used to, trying to inflate the pot with whatever hand I choose to play much of the time, especially at lower stakes. Because I take losing better than most I donÂ’t mind, while my opponents may become more frustrated having to see more expensive flops repeatedly and whiffing leading them to potentially tilt. I also worked on trying to win more pots without showdown with the right blockers with good results.
This coming year I will keep up the aggression and positive demeanor at the tables, and keep looking my best to portray confidence and hopefully be a role model. When I feel good I play well.
I think if I keep playing in good games and avoid the worst ones I will come out on top again in 2024. I will try getting seats in the biggest games more regularly as well where my hourly is much higher. And of course avoid the big mixed game and get practice lower.
LetÂ’s goÂ…!!
Made a little back at plo before finally getting a seat in the big game, only for the game to break 45 minutes later. (The host was gracious enough to play with us latecomers for a while even though the action left.) Quickly lost AKKds all in pre in that time to QQ and chopped a smaller side pot with JJ875 (we both made a straight).
Now grinding a little longer trying to make a little back before heading home quite tired.
Edit: lost 66 to KQo 10bb eff. at 2/5 ai pre and then whiffed a dsAA at 2/2 and drunk guy is holding up the game so I’m quitting.
Not the most auspicious start to the year by any meansÂ…!
Resubbed(bankrollissues) sorry for tilting
Welcome back!
Yesterday was a very slow session, the games were not that great either, about breakeven. Lost AKKQ9 on AT2 to 35 in big o in the mix spr 1 and AJ953ds to AA4 all in pre got 3/4. At 2/5, won A6s in 3! pot to(??) on AJ6...but lost A9 to 75 on 9537x at 1/3 (yes I played 1/3 the plo game was that bad!). Was pretty card dead at plo, although I did win QTT97 on JT3ss, turning quads. Someone mentioned I was a lawyer and another player said he could see me in a courtroom, prompting a third to say, "I could see him in a straight jacket." :O I had a private word with him before leaving and he probably felt really bad for saying that.
Wrapping up an 18-hour session, best moment of the day by far was when rec player asks me if he made a good fold, I say yes, and he writes fakes notes in his palm. Toxic pro blurts out “if you take advice from him you’ll be folding all the time,” to which rec simply responds “I just want to be successful.” 😃 I almost died inside. Just the other day in the 25/50 this toxic tard yelled at me to “stfu!” repeatedly over some innocuous joking comment to another player about not folding pairs. Nice to get some neutral party to validate me in front of him like that.
Stuck piles / ran like dirt but small loss all things considered in the grand scheme of things.
Just made quad 8s in plo, funny because that’s part of the reason I got so into poker years ago playing hold em, making quad 8s a lot…but the excitement and joy wasn’t there tonight, I was only a little less stuck, tired and ready to go home.
You're a lawyer?! Unsubbed!
j/k gl this year, great thread.
Guilty as charged! 😀
Thanks!! Your kind words brought me some rungood towards the end of the session and it’s a much more manageable loss now. Got a lot from this dude who owes everyone a bunch of money…including my buddy…felt good.
Last night lost with all my sets early on at plo, lost AKQT8 to TT and 99 on J96T, 9 otr, for side and main pots, won AKJT9ds in 3! pot on AQ2 to A345x, won K8s at 2/5 on 8h8s9s versus 67ss all in on the flop for $1,000 in a single-raised pot, lost with a rivered 6/6 in badacey in the mix to a slightly better 6/6, and lost with two 86s in 2-7 triple draw, also got skooped with 2345 in single draw versus two 8 draws in a capped pot pre as well.
Towards the end of the night did better, winning pair plus wrap plus fd against bottom set and top pair plus gutter in 3! pot spr 1.5, also won an AA pre but lost another AA pre.
Played very well just got unfortunate runouts. Lost a grand on the long session for a $3k + loss on the month so far.
Quickly dusted off $2.5k at 10/10, KQJT7ds lost all in pre and KQJT8ss lost in a l/rr pot spr mini...got it in with just a bakdoor wrap on 932r.
Left for greener pastures and spun it up at 1/2 plo fast, then my buddy said 10/25 was good and I hopped in there, got a triple with AA v. QJ v. KK and got a bluff through against this fear money player, shipped J6ss on 983Qss ott and he folded, said he didn't like the Q. Game broke and mix line up was no good so I played more plo instead and made another$1,200 before quitting up a good amount 13 hours in. Zzz..
Had a pretty good session, slow start and early morning game was no good at plo so I left for 2/5 where I finally flopped a set (!) only for the front-door flush to come in on the river and for my opponent to jam all in...ayeee! What made it a little more tilting was that I had a spade in my hand but I didn't think he'd do this with AA/KK/QQs. Left for 5/T where I flopped a set and got paid, made about $1,000 from the dude to my right wearing a gold rolex, a fraction of what that beauty cost him. Mix ran and I played to help the game started but I wasn't running well so I quit and left for plo again which by now had gotten better, lost a dsAA all in pre multiway, but then made a good comeback and actually won on the plo session too.
Been talking to some folks overseas about plo5 coaching as well, pretty stoked.
Are you getting the coaching or giving it?
Giving. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while and I’m glad I finally have someone(s) who are interested.
My friends suggested I not give away the strat for various reasons but I want to give it a try anyway.
I don’t think I’ll get coaching for plo, I’ve learned enough as it is through self-study.
Yesterday's binge of a session was absolutely horrid, I was never winning the whole time. At my worst I was stuck over $4k due primarily to runbad in 2/5...AQ lost to mid set in 3! pot on Q63hh, JJ ran into AA btn v. sb in straddled pot 80bb eff., KQs lost to 54s in 3! pot, bottom two lost to rivered straight (I assume) at 10/25/50, but made a great rebound at plo making over $2k at the end for a modest loss on the day. Slept all day into the early morning hours. Applied for a mental health law job but haven't heard anything. Coaching continues.
Was losing most of the day until the very end, won some pots at plo (AA held and AKJT8ds held) and ended up several hundred on the day. Ran QQ into KK at 5/T and lost a few hundo there, lost wrap+fd to set as well at plo. Student is already seeing positive results after a few days, awesome to hear! Wrapped up the night with some food with the poker boys and headed home after another long azz 13-hour session.
