1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

If you have any questions about 8game hands, fell free to ask me here. I played up to 2k 8game MTTs, and still grind the 109 on Pokerstars on weekends, sometimes.

Id also love to hear more in depth hh of baduci and badacy etc

I’ll try to drop more mixed games hands here, I don’t play super often though. Maybe a few times a month.

Ok I have a question for you:

In badeucy and badacey, the goal I presume is to make a strong one-way hand for one half of the pot or a strong scooping hand for both halves of the pot. Sometimes we have the option to draw 2 or 1 to improve our badugi chances or our low chances.

For example, in badacey we are dealt A24r and draw a 6 after the first draw, still without a badugi. We can keep the 6 or pitch two again and draw to a stronger overall hand, or one which reduces our badugi chances but improves our low chances.

In badeucy, we might have 234r and draw a 7 or 8 with no badugi yet, and have a similar choice.

Now, when we arrive after the second draw and still have no badugi, but improve our low, does that change things?

I also wonder whether these decisions change depending on whether we are heads up or multi-way and the number of cards others are drawing.

…thanks!

Im drunk now, might find a long answer tomorrow 😉

When its multiway, and you have a one way nutty hand, you wanna keep all players in, but that doesnt always mean you cant raise it up and cap, depending on positions...

When you have a semi-pretty-strong one way hand on river, and are in middle position, you can sometimes squeeze out the third guy that beats you your way, when raising or checkraising the initial bettor. That might wont fit those games, tho... Same concept sometimes helps you squeezing out third guy on earlier streets, too.

Depends... I really need to invest half an hour tomorrow to think about it. Im a european, only playing Pokerstars with old-school games...

Thats just my stud8 knowledge.

I just said he shouldn’t be mad about me giving him more action and plus he won the pot. I said I don’t soft play anyone and it wasn’t personal.

That’s why I hate playing with friends at the table I had this one friend who would always call me light thinking I will give him free cards and free showdowns cuz we’re buddies but if I continue to barrel he gets pissy. **** that.

Did well last night, winning a few AAs pre at 25/25 but losing KKQT9 to an A-high hand and losing AKT87 to AA on 87322 versus a capable bluffy opponent who apparently just doesn't bluff as much as he used to (doh!). Did well at 1/2 plo5 as well, running pretty hot in ways I cannot even remember now.

Had a nice chat with a friend on the drive home about hands which is always nice. Sold another strat guide too. Finally winning decent this month - again! Phew.

I'm curious about this hand. He bet the river and you called with counterfeited top 2? Were you expecting him to check his overpairs and bluff his missed draws, but he bet AA for value?

It was a loose call just because he used to over bluff. He flatted pre and flatted flop. I block AA and KK and I don’t think he’s value betting QQ and JJ/TT, he has lower missed straight draws in range too that I unblock. But I can’t beat some bluffs either like 699, he could also have a random 2. I could have been beat the entire time too by 33/77/88. Probably should have found a disciplined fold but my history with this V led me to call wider than usual.

Won some at 1/2 plo but lost at 25/25 with flush over flush in 3! pot to the "blaster" who had the nuts again, and lost oesfd and top two to top set, also lost nfd nut gutter to straight for a small loss overall on the night, but very disappointing because I was up a lot at my peak. I will probably stop playing this 25/25 game for the time being, my hourly at 1/2 is very high this year at $180/hr. and although my hourly is over double that in the big games the volume is much lower and my winrate is much lower as well - and it's an extremely small sample. If I keep making bad river calls against so called whales I will not be winning much at all. For such a big game it should ideally be softer than it is.

IMO, many whales are capable of playing nitty PLO when not tilted. Just these guys go completely off the rails if a couple hands don’t go their way and they lose 2 or 3 BI.

Played the 150/300 mix for a while until a seat opened up at plo, was winning but then lost with 239 in 2-7 razz and AJo in limit hold em and 27 in triple draw made a 9 to a 87. Was pretty annoyed I lost my profit and quit for 5/T/25 where I ran it up until plo opened up.

Very upset, two days in a row up a few thousand and lost. Feeling like I am very off my game and the money doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. At least I caught a bluff in hold em, live read for the win. Woo-hoo… .. Still feeling very second tier right now.

poker is 90% mental.

Wrapped up the night losing top two+nfd to wrap plus worse fd against my friend who gets upset when he loses to me (I wasn't upset lol), then lost top set to middle set+fd and AQJ54 to QTT83 against whale maniac and called it a night down a few hundo on the day. As my friend said, this too shall pass.

Note to self: JT966 is never a 5! / GII according to the solver. But when you’re on tilt running bad for a month…let’s get it in! I mean, everyone limped in so they must have crappy hands anyway and the short stack who raised only has $100. It’s a good idea to isolate and try to get it heads up. Everyone called my small raise and the short stack jammed? Now I bet everyone will fold, gotta put in another big raise. Oh wait, the dude with more jammed? With KKT52? What a fish. I’ll show him.
Wait, the runout was QJ544? Da *** ??

Was getting super frustrated at plo so I left for mix where I lost a big o pot with AKT63ds but by now the plo must move was absolutely divine so I left for that while I could still play with them. Before I left, got dealt a pat 7 low in Badacey and won a small pot heads up.

Super card dead all day omg…help!!! The game was so good when I was being dealt strong hands and flopping well. Now doo-doo.

PLO game got much better, but lost AA644ss to AJT98ds for $1,200 pre ($500 main pot $700 dry side pot where we're printing in both), then won AQ997 nut hearts on 953hh three ways and rounded out the night down a grand after the whales quit. Slept 9 hours, woke up groggy and decided to "hit the snooze button" and slept again, didn't wake up for another 10 hours lol. Not the worst thing because I have some important things to take care of during the day the next couple days.

Also I am doing a $50,000 BR challenge. Taking guesses until April 1 on how long it will take to earn it. Winner gets a plo5 strat guide and coaching session.

2 months.

Up $5,966 today from plo mainly in 7 hours, a little 1/3 while I waited for a plo seat. Won AAQ98ds multi-way was the biggest one. Good start to the challenge! 😀

$44,034 to go.

Nice decor mgm in spring.

Nice keep it up! At this rate you will finish the challenge in seven days!

Youll need more than two month, but less than 100 days.
Now other people can only guess less than two months but more than seven days, or more than 100 days, right?

Thanks for the optimistic guessesÂ…lost with top set twice today, lost nut flush draw overpair and triple gutter to wrap plus two pair, and a bluff got caught. Lost gutter top pair and nut straight blockers to nfd and overs. Won top boat plus over card to similar hand in a nice win, but still stuck due to the runbad with top sets to draws. Still on the grindÂ…still taking guesses!

I felt like this BR challenge might motivate me to play better as IÂ’ve started losing my mojo lately with all the runbad and some loose preflop play to go along with it.

June 6th is my guess! gl!

$41,659 to go, won a couple draws against made hands to wrap up a tough start to the session for a $2,300 profit or so. AQ986ds and AA876ds were the big ones. I got the same obnoxious boasting loud player both hands which felt great. He even got a table change, to my delight. Lots of regs I’ve been beating up lately have been leaving my games actually. Hehehe.

Completion in July. Good Luck OP

Just a heads up to those who gave more vague answers - we are doing the closest to the actual date without going over, not just the month or number of months. Acceptable responses would be e.g., April 19, or June 28. Otherwise it would be too easy!

April 20th I really wanna plo5 for free lol. So make sure to win on that day.

Also if you posted "X number of months," I will interpret that as X months from your post. So, if you posted "2 months" on March 27, I'll assume you mean May 27 as the end date. If you just posted "May," that's not accurate enough.

Best bet is to just guess a month and date.

I'll do my best, no guarantees! That's an optimistic guess. Thanks for the encouragement!
