1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Love the Hunger Games reference. Thanks!

Playing plo and loud talkative Ethiopian dude calls me white Jesus as a nickname. A morbidly obese wheelchair lady is sitting next to him shadowing her friend who is playing. Ethiopian says to wheelchair lady “I’ll do a 360 on a wheelchair sometime.” She says “I’d like that” and licks her lips. :O I say I’ll buy you the hotel room upstairs right now for $220. Ethiopian is silent. lol.

10 minutes later they’ve both left the table.

Up $3,545 last night, $4k from plo and a small loss from hold em A8 v. KT on AT2T4 versus stealth Argentinian pro (I didn’t hear him speak, would have found the fold if I had!), and KQ

$50k Br challenge: $38,114 to go! Two days left to lock in your guess for how long it takes me to get down to zero. Winner gets a plo5 strat guide and coaching session.

Pretty slow day, games weren't great yesterday, managed to eke out a $700 win or so. No terribly big pots either, lost AAnfd to KK on Kxxhh in 4! pot early on, won my own set to AA nfd in single-raised pot, and won nut boat to flush and set to another draw as well.

$37,352 to go. Just to make things interesting, I am going to throw in my own guess as well, and if I am the closest without going over, no one gets anything. May 8th.

Good start at plo, won A77 nut spades on J73ss and some other spots like nut flush over second nut flush, game slowed down so I left for a good 5/T with a legend of plo playing, he proceeds to stack me in a 3! pot with my AsAh to his QTs on 98Jr flop checked through and it went in ott 6c bringing bdfd at spr 1.4. Then he snap quit. 10/10 running, going to grind here until the regs take my seat and play 1/2 plo again. Currently up $1,200 but was up $2,400 before the AA debacle.

DonÂ’t bum hunt, itÂ’s not worth it.

Also, Hold ‘em is really high variance game compared to plo AINEC. :P

Edit. Just got stacked AKT45ds KJ3 my suits..back to about even. Oh ****ing brother. I should stick to 1/2 plo.

Went back to 1/2, easy money again! Crai J2AA7 on 6522J, chipped up here and there…made back a lot of what I lost in the bigger games. Have some faith again now. Happy Easter!

Made $3,230 on the last night of the month, capping it off nicely towards the end there. $5k from 1/2 plo.

Got a table change and everyone there I wanted to play with snap quit.

Br challenge: $34,122 to go.

Couldn’t miss a flop, up $2,394 today. Lost a big one wrap oesfd and mid pair to AAnfd but otherwise ran very well.

Br challenge: $31,728 to go.

Last night, this loud rec is sitting next to me (dude who almost stiffed me on the drink tip I lent him a while back and never let me hear the end of it...we since made up), starts bragging about his "yacht," (35 ft....) and how he banged a pear-shaped chick in it, asks me if I want to see a picture of her, I declined, he says "now you're definitely not invited to my yacht party." Lol. He brags a lot about his possessions.

Got it in against maniac a couple times who stacked me the other day with AA to his QT, first hand I had AKJT5ds and 4!/gii against him, flopped the nut flush and held, second time I had JJ885 and flopped a set of Js and held multiway.

Older Korean dude with a thick accent who once called me "she" played against me too, I bluff T9965 on T76r, he flats, turn T, I x, he jams, I snap and he's drawing dead with 66.

Lose with AAJT4ds on 775 to wrap+fd in 4! pot as well to really nice blackjack player who offered to buy me dinner on his comps once. "These people are bloodsuckers here,"he warned to this clueless first-time player sitting next to his wife, "you might want to play 1/3."

It’s $20. It covers basic strat for various stack sizes but probably 100bb mainly.

Thanks!

I email everyone who purchases it a copy in word format. I only accept PayPal. It’s very easy to set up an account for free.

Up $955 today, $1400 plo, -$500 2/5 with AJcc v. 34cc in 3! pot 567cc flop, could have been a $5k plo session though but I made a couple bad $500 flop or river calls with strong hands and lost the bigggest pot I played against an action player my KQT95 k-high clubs to his AT94 Acc on J84cc7d turn the last $2k went in on the turn and he made his nut flush on the river. Sometimes playing a little looser preflop can catch up with me…. Then his wrap got there against my top set straight blocker double back door nut flush draw and he quit. AAQQ8 on A57, 4 right on the turn and he actually showed me 86 while I was tanking and I just folded. Bleh (but also sorta relieved I could get some sleep). Horrid end to the session, lost $3k in the last hour.

$30773 to go.

Things have slowed down a little and I’m folding pre a lot, and I have a slight food coma from my kung pao chicken, so mid-session update it is.

Running very well today, no tough spots, all bluffs getting through except one and my value is getting called. Rivered nut flush AQQ65ds double flush draw double gutter for big side pot with a short stack all in to top set. One top boat to same player’s underfull as well QTT77 on T22Q5. Then he quit for the hold em tournament.

Grinding it out, picking up a lot of pots uncontested against capped ranges helps a lot. Sold another start guide to someone I knew from bar poker fays who has started playing plo with us.

At this rate it’s looking good for whoever guessed earliest for the br challenge. I’m running well and playing very much above the rim. My buddy told me I’m the best player in the field the other day and he’s a very good player too.

Not sure if I should be playing the bigger games when I do so well here.

Up $4,078 in 11 hours at plo, very good run, won nut flush to second nut flush towards the end against a guy who says his dick is bigger than mine..(yes he actually said that at the table)….whatever you say…I’ll have all the money, thank you for your donation sir. :P

Br challenge: $26,695 to go. About halfway there now.

You’re a little late (the challenge cutoff was supposed to be April 1), but I’ll make an exception just for you. No more guesses!

Good luck to everyone who participated in the challenge.

My buddy is in jail after a mental health breakdown went south and we’ve been chatting lately. I was reminded how quickly things can turn around. 8 years ago I was in a hospital and today I’m living a successful life that looks nothing like I could have imagined back then. This too shall pass indeed.

Mid-session update…very slow day, lost AA to AA pre and after the third AA v AA all in pre I got into I decided I was in the wrong game and changed tables. Better here but card dead and not able to set up a good opportunity to get the whale who is potting overpairs no draw on 986 flops lol. Currently stuck $900. Made $100 at 2/5 at least while I waited for plo.

The grind goes on….

Wrapping up an extremely slow session, very few playable hands today, a couple bluffs got called as well and my value / sets didn’t hold. Only stuck a few hundo so not bad all things considered.

Thanks! I was in Vegas so no following along like usual 😉

So sorry for your friend, and so glad you are doing well.

Ended up losing $600 on the dot last night, biggest pots at plo were KK v. V's 22 + nut hearts on K92 all the money went in on turn when bd hearts appeared and I crai. Also lost a pretty big one with 97744 on 234dd to two people with 56 and a third with 43. Extremely card dead though, it was quite frustrating!! The games weren't really that good either. Happens.

Got a solid night's sleep at least, so that's a plus.

br challenge: $27,295 to go.
