1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Having another rough go at it today, lost top top to bottom set on flush draw bricking runout at 5/T, at 25/25 lost bottom set open ender in bomb pot when flop checked through and action drunk player bet turn, lost mid set to rivered gutter to same action v, lost A63 to 66 on 633AK in limped pot as well against action v (I was in bb). Got a double with AA at least. All these players have it and I am paying them off. Maybe IÂ’ve become the action!

Now at smaller plo game to grind it up again for a bit before calling it a night.

Seems like lately all the whales had a New YearÂ’s resolution to quit poker because the games have dried up a little lately. Gonna tough it out and keep playing my best. Honestly feeling a little off my A game lately as well, lots of sets getting cracked and losing the bigger pots as a favorite. All things considered, it could be worse.

Yeah you're probably right, although last year this time I don't recall similar, I really ran pretty well too.

I was starting to eye the big mix last night I was getting a little over losing at plo and hold 'em, but I stayed strong.

Lately I have been paying off with 2nd best more often that I should...the money does not mean what is used to to me and big bets for others seem like meh small bets to me, esp. at 5/T and 1/2 plo5. I've been playing bigger hold 'em games to leverage my bankroll in those games more.

Bottom set is normally a trivial fold for me but last night I think I was a little tilted by my smaller plo session and losing in hold 'em too, some dude who beat me in a few pots at plo said he "owned me" and I was pretty upset that he said something so unsportsmanlike. I told him since he was such a big guy he could come find me at 25/50 at md live and we'll play there.

On a funnier note, this drunk Indian player lost a pot and blurted out "don't do that to daddy." And we repeated "don't do that to daddy" the rest of the session every time we lost. Lol.

Just when I thought it was going to be a horrible month: 25/50 plo two hours in, in for $1,500:

Record session, game turned into 50/50/100. Yippie!

Good Job Very Inspiring!

Thanks!

Some bigger pots were AhAT84hds 976hh versus 99 in 3! pot, gii flop held both runouts. Didn't realize I flopped the straight at first, thought it was a split pot when I made my flush on the bottom runout. Oops!

KKQQ3ds in 4! pot $1,700 pre, Q53 my flush draw flop, donk at spr 1.25, fold.

AK653 A24hh flop x through, turn 9, donk, I raise $3,000, folds around.

Open / jam KQT93ds otb versus 3! squeeze, win both boards top two and straight against bad AA.

Took friends out for breakfast afterwards and including this guy I had some bad blood with previously who had been playing. Good times.

Played night session, very good game, was up $5k at peak but lost some with AA nfd in 3! pot to top set and QQJT9 v. AAT98 in 4! pot on J83r.

Biggest win of night was T9875ds on K76 my suits versus KK77 and 66 for the massive side pot. Very good month, let's keep it going...!

No heads up match but we'll sort it out other ways.

Snowed in, just dking around on here arguing with trolls about what qualifies someone to teach poker...good galfond jungle heads up compilation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls1L3Mz0....

My first paying student is already doing incredibly well! Hooray!

Running well today, a little tired earlier than normal, probably because I was exhausted arguing with Monikrazy all day in the Omaha forum and had to shovel snow.

Might just call it an early night. The galfond jungle compilation is pretty good and entertaining and instructive as well. I was blasting every blocker I could today at the tables, that’s for sure!

Sometimes you’re so tired you start suggesting to the whale sitting to your right that he call it a night, so you can go home….

Monikrazy guy seems sick in the head, very odd duck. You seem to still play a lot of nl, do you like 2/5nl or 1/2/5card more? I’ve thought about picking up 5card at mgmnh but have only ever won in 4card live in super soft west coast lineups, buying in short and playing super tight pre.

Definitely like 1/2 plo5 more, no comparison. More action on average, if you’re able to handle the swings, and much bigger skill gaps.

You can win using the same strategy you employed out west in these games as well.

Best 1/2 plo session ever! Got high fives from Vs too, people here are starting to like me, it's pretty neat. Helps to not be grumpy working two+ jobs.

One legendary V 3! GII everything against me and I held with most of them, won some big side pots with shorty jamming and me "isolating" for a side pot with the legend too.

Looking like it will be another best month if things keep going well. I've definitely grown even more as a player, no question.

A good session, no records broken but I didn't have it in me to play my usual 8-10 hours, just 5 last night. My lady friend visited again, we got dinner on me to celebrate my rungood. We got to talking about meeting people and she asked if any guy had ever approached me in the poker room and I said no. It's a tough place for gays to meet. But you never know...there's definitely one dude I've been swiping left on tinder who plays hold 'em but he slow rolled me the first time we played together ("said "good call" and had the obvious winner) so I'll pass. He's out of shape too and sorta a nit. Next!

Another good session last night, 25/25/25/25 plo5 (yes, 4 blinds), lost set over set at 5/5 as a shorty first, lost AA v. AA v. non-AA, made it all at the smaller plo game until I was summoned to the big one and literally first hand I am dealt AAJT8 and get it in against a loose player for my first buy in and hold. Won flush over flush later on as well, and nut straight nut flush draw straight redraw versus?? in a bomb pot for a tidy profit on the evening. Looking more and more like another very big month.

We all joked and bad mouthed one another, someone asked if I was buying new sweaters with my profits lately as I was wearing one, I said this one was a hand me down from my dad, "vintage," I said. Then someone said don't use that word just say it's old...I said ok, it's a historic sweater. As I left the same guy hollered "please give that sweater back to your dad!"

Yet another solid day, ran a little bad at the smaller plo game against a legend, losing wrap+fd against his straight in a $3.5k pot, but more than made up for it at 25/25 where I won AA in 4! pot and QQJ97 to KT998 on T84r...V said he didn't see how much I was playing and misclick raised after I jammed on him and since we are on better terms now than we used to be I agreed to just play for his $1,200 raise amount (I scooped). Also lost K-high ds rundown in 4! pot to bad AA, flop A55...lol. All in all a good session though, and officially my best month ever (so far)! I got a little ool at the smaller plo game with the legend, 4! AQ765ds against his presumably looser than most 3! and got punished for it this time but otherwise played fine.

In the beginning of the session people were getting stacked so fast and the fill wasn't arriving quickly enough and due to a new rule that does not permit using lamers in lieu of chips, some of us were finding creative ways to reload. Quite the annoying rule, have to keep more chips on me from now on it seems.

Have made up with the pro I had bad blood with for a while there, his friend talked to him for me. Hopefully the truce lasts this time! I was at my wit's end. A general trend lately, smoothing things over with some old foes. Feels good!

Word dt everything smoothes out over time.

Had another good session, what a big heater this month! Woke up late with a headache today, took a tylenol.

Main hands were AKKT9 in 4! pot low spr Q-high flop K turn J river for the scoop and nut flush draw nut gutter bdfd and pair versus two nut straights, a lot of other smaller pots I don't remember now as well. Demolishing my last monthly record so far. At this rate I will destroy last year's profits, please poker gods keep the rungood flowing! I have my eyes on a few townhomes.

One thing I attribute to my higher profits is betting bigger with my good hands and not being worried about losing, upping the variance in spots too. Helps to have the bankroll to play totally fearlessly.

Yet another great session...yeesh...blessed. Best hand I have played in a while...quite proud of this one...

overly aggro V raises over a few limps and me, I flat on btn JT977ssss, we go multiway to Qh3s5s, x through. Turn 8s. Prf $100 into $125, I flat, another V flats. River: 2d. Pfr jams $250, I raise to $600, folds and I win versus pfr's naked Ks. Was quite sure pfr was bluffing but didn't want to let third V in there with a slightly better flush on the river, so I raised. Worked out! I think.

Some high stakes plo...live game...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ekmmvaJ....

A bit slower than normal today, still booked a modest win and it all adds up. Played a little bit of everything, started off losing at plo with top and middle pair oesd and fd versus bottom set nfd, but made a good rebound. Games were only so-so today. Sorta my fault for not going to md live for 5/5, but probably wouldn't get a seat there until way late anyway. And I saw a few regs from there at mgm tonight, maybe the games at live weren't good either. Getting more inquiries about plo lessons, hope I get some more students. I enjoy it a lot (and at my rate it's sorta a steal if I may say so!).

Another night of utterly filthy rungood…it was abominable really. I am a little ashamed of how good I ran in most of the big pots actually. A little bit getting there a little bit holding. Just sick really. DsAA scooping a multi-way shove fest, top trips rivering flopped top full, AAQQ3 runner runner JJ on J73r TK runout. AKJT7ds scooping multi-way and huge side pot against action with a Q-high rundown. Just to name a few.

Someone said they wished they could play as fearlessly as me. I really couldn’t care less about the money or results at this point, it’s true.

What a ridiculously insane start to 2024. Easily the best I’ve run in such a short span of time … ever!

omg!
