1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
Applied to volunteer for a mental health nonprofit. Pretty stoked. May provide some balance in my life, and doing something I enjoy too.
Grinding plo, won AJT96ds to AKK, main game sucked so I left for 2/5. Applied to volunteer while folding, good use of time. Maybe if I get a position I can learn a thing or two and turn my experience into something bigger, like a project!
Volunteering is a great idea. I should do it, but I know myself -- maybe I can find the right fit.
I'm lucky in that I get paid enough for the amount of work I have to put in. Of course, that's because I'm good at what I do and very fast 😉
^^Volunteering is how I found my last jobs actually. Can be a great way to network too.
Started the session yesterday well, slowly lost it, then towards the end flopped quads on J44hh versus 55 and JJ, 5 ott and I got a triple up. Felt it was time to leave before traffic hit and booked a small but respectable win finally. Was pretty slow session, not really a lot of good hands to play. Seems par for the course lately at 1/2 plo. It's ok, still doing very well.
Woke up late, lots of rest, gonna get my lattes plus light work out and food in before heading out. Hopefully the weekend games are good, they are hit or miss.
Haven't been posting a lot of specific winnings lately, a buddy suggested not to and from a privacy standpoint I agree. This year is going a lot better than last year at this time though and I suspect I will be able to make my goal for the year unless anything changes drastically.
Running meh today so far, lost biggest pot, turned nut straight second nut flush draw and pair blocker to AA nfd, river flush, $1800 pot $660 left on the river, paid it off in such a big pot. Against this player type maybe could find a tight fold.
Ran well in other spots though, so only down a few hundo right now. My game is really solid and mental state at its peak. I really credit myself for getting to this point, being very meticulous with my routines and physical wellness.
Lost AA665ds in 3! pot, J63 flop, all in flop spr 1, TJ runout, lost to JT...! Ended down around a buy in, not bad, before finally quitting - too tired, but game was sadly still good. Folded QJT96ds pre to a big raise for side pot, would have won, but V had KKQQ so I was in bad shape, and short stakker had AAJT9 for the main so I really made a good fold despite the result. Also folded AQT85ds to a 3! with shorties behind who may jam and reopen, would have won that one too. Probably played a bit too snug that hand, just lost with the set and wasn't feeling like gambling. Damn!
We had good banter at least, someone asked if I was truly white, I said "more like off white" due to my Greek heritage. Lol.
Re-upped my subscription to plo mastermind for a little brushing up, watched a video, exercised, great morning routine today, gonna be a great day! Mixed game fun later too.
Let’s run good!

PLO went fine, a little rocky trying to get a table transfer (floor was clueless about the transfer list, which was super frustrating), ended up doing well. Got a little tilted this guy made a gutter on me and quit for the big mix, did well there too, making A23456 in stud 8 against kings up, a wheel in triple draw, holding with a pat 87, and 3/4ing in big o with nut low draw and open-ender against a set. Took down a few in plo too and played very disciplined. Quit while I was up and getting tired. Another solid day to round out the end of the month. Found out some poor dealers got the boot, one who I heard had been fired for stealing previously and who I am pretty sure swiped from me in at least one pot, possibly more. Thank goodness and good riddance!
What a month, winning very well across all variants, big o, plo, and mixed games. Holy smokes! I have to say I am a just little proud of myself right about now. Now some poker on youtube and well-deserved sleep.
Got pretty wrecked at plo, couldn’t win a pot, got rivered a bunch, lost the big all ins pre, left for 5/T…gonna try to grind it out until the 20/40 mix runs a little later. Was starting to go on tilt at plo. Raised AAKQTds and got no action preflop. Even got slowrolled by the biggest nit in the casino. Oh brother.
Thank goodness for the day before. Hope you get 'em at 5/T and 20/40 mix.
Thanks… ! It wasn’t a big loss but it was a super frustrating session for various reasons. I hadn’t felt so upset in a while actually. Hopefully it turns around. Still a great month all things considered and can’t complain at all. Best month ever last month and second best month ever this month so far.
Won $850 at 5/T, opens were to $100 with a crazy 100% Vpip player playing and calling any two. Left for mix after she quit and lost a little, plo must move looked good so I jumped in and lost nut straight in 3! pot spr 2 with two back door flush draws to his straight redraw and he hit his redraw. Back at mix now…plo main game sucked. Lots of table changes today, often the case when I’m losing trying to find a good game to get unstuck.
Reminding myself how well I’m doing and not being hard on myself right now.
Made a good rebound after being stuck $800 at mix, won a couple big o pots and a triple draw hand, made a 76 on the end (the 2 slid right in there!). Then went back to plo where I ran well, making a couple boats in 3! pots, winning with top two, rivering top boat, against either a worse two pair or a set (got this dirty angle shooter). Won $2k, so ended down just $600 on the night! Way overslept for home game, oops! Was expecting to sleep 10-12 hours, slept 17. Go figure.
Lost a few hundo at the home game mix this time, then headed to mgm and lost AKs
Getting sorta excited about moving, would be cool to host a game of my own there if it works out surrounded by people I like and playing games I enjoy. What I’ve dreamed about for a while now.
New Kirby from my sister!!

Started running good then lost a 4! pot with top pair nut gutter two back door flush draws to top set against action player at a low medium spr…super frustrating. He bets very light too so it was an easy get it in for me. Grinding it back now. Won AKQ42 nut clubs on JT25cc. Got another student too. And someone edited my strat guide for me without asking. Going well all things considered.
Interesting hand just now…bet of $100 and a raise all in for $295 on J723ccc and bettor is tanking. While he tanks reg to his right says to her bf “I folded the naked Ac and top two.” (She claims she thought they were all in.) After hearing this, bettor calls it off and wins with Q-high flush. Guy who went all in was a brand new young sorta scared money player who had a 9-high flush. I called out the reg for influencing the action and she said sorry but the floor didn’t do anything. Feeling really bad for the dude, I gave the guy his river bet back to make him whole, since the reg wouldn’t do the same.
Newbie says thanks and “you’re a legend man,” I said no worries “just come back and play again sometime, I don’t want new players to have bad experiences.” The reg and her bf were stone silent. Go dumbo!
In some good karma, got downstairs and the comps system was down so I got my breakfast comped! 😀
The lady and bf shouldn’t be playing at the same table ever at this point and she should get an insta 24 hour ban I don’t care if they are huge fish themselves.
Problem is mgmnh has the dumbest, most apathetic floors in the country. I remember when the transition lenses nitwit would grind 1/3nl constantly table change, talk basic strat at the table, and call out fish for playing bad lol like could he be a bigger loser.

It’s annoying to play at the same table with them, very true.
The good karma continues this morning, after a good morning routine and a productive coaching session with someone in Thailand won almost all of my AAs pre and a dsKK pre too for good measure. It’s cool coaching really experienced and accomplished players who want to get into this great game. I learn something from them too.
Trying to have fun while playing too lately, fun action guy plays long sessions, when he scoops a big one yells "swing the money!" and I told him I hoped he won a big one so I could hear him say it lol. He won one against me and said it. Lol.
Later backraise dsAA982 with nut clubs, three way all in, someone asks about clubs, I say "we're going clubbin'!" and flop is KJT one club. Second club ott, "we're goin' clubbin'!" I repeat over and over as the river rolls off: a third non-pairing club. Even the loser of the hand had to chuckle on himself. "John, did you ever go to a club anyway?" "I went to a lot back in the day." "Name one." "I went to so many I can't recall...."
Early morning session started well, winning two pair to fd plus wrap, but losing fd plus wrap of my own to top set and top set to wrap. Currently stuck a few hundo from being up $1,900. Very annoying but as my buddy said I’m doing really well anyway. He’s right.
Ended up losing with a bluff towards the end, saw some places with friends, then dinner and much-needed rest. Woke up and watched some more training videos to brush up, super validating to see the concepts I already identified being relayed by the experts! (F the haters...monikrazy, you were just wrong on the hi low discussion you arrogant bag. The omaha subforum is worse off because of you and it's too bad I swore myself off from posting there anymore because you chose to attack my coaching abilities.) Also makes me wonder whether I need to be paying for something I figured out on my own lol.
Made a hell of a come back at 25/25/50, from stuck $6k to even, then lost some back at 5/5 and game was bad so I left for 1/2. Feels like a win all things considered. Lost top two nfd in big 3! pot in the beginning then folded runner runner outs that got there twice in another big one.
At end of the night lost yet another all in at 1/2 plo, this time bottom two sd plus fd to q-high fd op and got slowrolled on top of it...was a little stunned and took a few seconds to process the loss this time, dealer called the floor on me for not paying the bet fast enough..apparently while I was looking at his hand I unconsciously took back my chips and before even asking me for the bet the dealer just yelled "floor!" Omg! Like I on all people actually wasn't going to pay the damn bet. The dealer fake apologized for overreacting.
I don't think I've ever been this disrespected by a dealer since that dude said I didn't belong in the men's restroom. Fitting end of a horrid day of poker I guess? An annoying but manageable loss overall but still sucks to run bad after breaking even in the big game.
My friend says he gets a lot out of the hands I post here, and he's a great guy, loaned me $3k last night when I was losing and low on ammo, gave me some bullets to keep firing and I started winning with the backup in my pocket!
Anyway, lost KKJJ3ds in 4! pot with top set to AAQQ+fd, lost AAT9hhhh on J82hh to J8, lost AJT95dd on T86dd versus T866 and a worse draw that went runner runner boat, and lost T9865ss on 9TJ spr 2 versus aggro bluffing QQ+fd and his fd got there. He said "I hope you don't have spades," so when the As hit I fastrolled the flush and he said "what does he have?" and turns over second nut spades...this was the hand the dealer insta called the floor on me for pulling my chips back, I was in shock losing yet another pot in quick succession and getting slowrolled on top of it. Yeesh! What made it even worse was my friend was sitting behind me watching so I was embarrassed on top of it all in front of her. :/
