1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

What do you think of plomm 5c video content? How you study 5c?

Mastermind is fine starting out, some of the videos are hard to sit through though, listening to the same voice for hours. I enjoyed the mental game stuff a lot actually. A lot of the stuff they suggested I was already implementing in game so it wasn’t new, but some concepts were helpful. Using purely gto preflop ranges is leaving money on the table though, I wouldn’t use the plo trainer ranges in my live games. Postflop, opponents are not playing anywhere near gto either.

A little politics again trying to get into the 25/25 big o game, seats were open for hours but organizer said go fly a kite even though players said I was good in their book. Claimed I hit and run and wasn’t good for the game, when he is the biggest nit around and the last time I won big in his game I played well after he and the other losers left. lol.

Jokes on them because I’m not even that good at big o. Doing well tonight at bread and butter plo5 anyway, game is good.

Started rocky isolating AQT86ds and ran into AA922, flopped top pair two back doors to bottom set spr .1. Then lost AKKQ8ds to a limp raise and a jam from a shorty.

Now with coked out dude in town for meeting who got it in $2k flop with top and bottom nut gutter and hit the miracle gutter on the river. Then a dude was all in five ways and got to the river with six cards in his hand which would have scooped but
lost it all - dead hand, man. Grinding it back…!

Made some but lost KKT77 to whale's AJT92sss on 922, 5! pre, he donk potted flop and I just folded, but not before he literally exposed a 2 in his hand for me. Ended up just under $1k after a long day, theew in the towel when rush hour was about to hit and the whale said he was playing until noon before his presentation...wanted to hunt him more, but wanted to book a win and wake up relatively early (for my standards) even more. Overall played more snug and got to fundamentals.

Slow grind today, not a ton of premiums and running bad losing a dsAA all in pre and KQJT5ds and KK2 to 33 on K3232sshsd against loose action player. I guess I was due for a little runbad after that massive heater! It’ll turn around soon enough. At least the market is raging bull lately.

Getting more student interest in coaching too which is cool. Probably will have to increase my rate soon. I think $50 an hour is too cheap.

A steal! I would potentially consider but never play five card.

Surprised kkt77 is a 5 bet.

Surprised kkt77 is a 5 bet.

It is against an 80% vpip whale for a large side pot. 😀

Thanks!

Ran meh, top boat into quads 2x, AA didn't hold 2x, a few other preflop spots didn't go my way either, but did well enough elsewhere to book only a small loss on the long session. Finally quit when I was around even and started getting 3! every time I opened by this aggro young dude who is a good player, lost with wrap to set and lost an AA to him in a 4! pot as well. Figure I wasn't getting unstukk and better to sleep and return fresh when the game is better. Still a losing month so far.

Games are unusually slow for a Thursday night, missed playing with the action players today apparently, won nfd multiway versus two straights and just coasting now trying not to give too much action in this tight line up.

Brought on another student which is cool, he got a lot out of my guide already too.

Focusing on letting the game come to me and not forcing it.

Did alright for a slow night around $1,500 profit, just 6 hours of play time, games were whatever. Got to play 25/50 plo for a little before the game broke and made a few hundo there, split the pot with wrap nfd pair against two pair (unfortunate) and otherwise played small ball and made a little here and there, even won two $100 waterfalls. Rounded out the night talking the law with my poker friend/law student while playing 5/T, good times!

DT Just curious as to when you prefer to play? Late nights, early mornings, afternoon evening sessions?

My friends and I talk about this from time to time. Night games are more aggro and you can win bigger, while day games are more passive and you're more likely to just win smaller. Interestingly, weekend games are a little tougher as the weekend warriors play who are generally more skilled.

Personally if I had the night games during the day that would be ideal so I had a regular sleep pattern and was always up with the sun!

Games are good, just hopping around a little tonight as games broke or got bad. Had another coaching session, went fine. HeÂ’s in Vancouver! Good reminders for myself about first principles when teaching others too.

Only caught the tail end of the big plo games tonight unfortunately, so didnÂ’t have time to make a whole lot. The smaller game is good, played some mix again too but ran meh.

Not getting a ton of good hands today either. Missed a raise with an AA, it limped around unfortunately so I couldnÂ’t spring the trap. Ran well in other spots so itÂ’s ok. Still coasting in the red this month but not terribly so. Very standard. Will turn around, just gotta be patient.

Could tell the frustration starting to build at one point in the session when I 4! dsAA and got a bad flop and had to fold.

Finished strong last night, even made an extra $150 from someone desperate to switch tables even though I told him I was leaving soon anyway, lol. Won two all in pre spots and a 3! pot with KQJ96ds on T94ss my suit, rivered two pair against presumably AA.

Just took it easy and played a 20/40 mixed home game with some familiar friends, ran well after a rough start and booked a good win. Really fun to finally get dealt a few good starting hands in stud 8...! I don't think I'd ever seen A23 until tonight. Made a nut flush and 6 low one hand, pretty sweet. Probably helped that we are dealt 4 in this variant rather than 3. Was pretty beat not getting my usual sleep two nights in a row so didn't play super late.

My poker friend was there tonight and I was really stoked to learn he's getting into the plo5 streets again after a break to play mix (I followed him there lol). Have learned a thing or two from him over the years.

Ran fine today so far at plo, started losing a little back with trips against a flush draw and A7K88 to AK9T5 on AA7, decided to get dinner but not before this obnoxious smelly drunk wanted to fight me over whether my legs were in his way when he asked to sit next to me. He probably just wanted to impress his girl.

Year of the dragon:

^ such a cool place!

Yeah it’s great.

Ran really well after dinner break, decided to use my casino box now that there have been some high profile robberies. Not taking any chances…!

Won double flush draw two pair against straight on the turn, AKQT5ds all in pre too.

Had another good session, ran good, gambled with the loose players preflop also and won a lot of pots, AKT32ds and AKQJ6ds, dsAA too multiway. Top set nut gutter got there on the river A9877 on 75326 and beat 84. Someone jokingly said I was not playing fair and I said I'd do a strip search. Later a fun player said of me, "if you aren't careful you won't have a shirt." Fun times. Finally winning this month.

Edit: Mariano wouldn't name Q3 as the "gay waiter" on his last vlog...said it had a different name but wouldn't say it on his vlog...wtf?? Hater.

Running like fire today again, won a dsAA pre multi-way and a couple ds J-hi rundowns one flopped big wrap and scooped. Also scooped a couple ds K-high rundowns. Won KQJJ8 inside wrap against two action Vs too. Can’t be stopped!

I feel like I’m finally the one martingaling everyone else rather than the other way around back in the day, lol. Couple players have said they want to be like me when they grow up. And they’re old…! Haha.

Had a dream I flatted a flop raise on QQJ with KT in hold 'em and bet river when x to but by mistake bet $2k more than I meant to, he looked me up with a Q and I asked to take the $2k in pumpkins back that were stuck to the bottom of my bet lol.

Have milestoned again this year with a phenomenal start, but not really feeling the happiness. It's really more like an absence of sadness I have when losing. May have said this before, but I don't get a lot of joy out of winning anymore. Maybe that just is part of being a pro, the dumbness to the money. Browsing for things that might make me a little happier, like a watch or something. Would rather invest it though.

Maybe a new home where I have friends over for a fun mixed home game...that would be awesome.

Ran well at plo, wrap plus fd beat set, lost nfd pair plus gutter to straight with flush draw blockers. Lost set to nuclear wrap too. Won QQ4 to Q4 on Q44. Finally got a seat in the mix and made a 6 dugi 7 low in razzdugi to start things off. Finally it’s a good month now!

Checked my stats for the past two years in plo, winning 57% of sessions at 22 bb/hr. over several thousand hours. Holy smokes!

Got another nice shout out from a student in my coaching thread too, nice to see people are getting something out of the sessions! My first student reported he was up $17,000 for the month after we started working together after months of losing or breaking even.

Not everyone is salty like Monikrazy was lol…https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/290/c....

Lynne Ji spotted coming out of the high limit room tonight! *starstruck*

Sorta wanna take a picture with her but don’t want to come off creepy.

Running fine so far…night is still young.

Wrapped up well, won a multiway with QJ988, won KQT86ds to dsAA, among others. Dealer who shipped me the pot on the QJ988 hand said I deserved it, and she got a good top for that!😀

Running above EV lately in many spots, especially all ins pre, a very warm welcome.
