1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Beast mode activated! Got a request to quit the game again today. KKj95hh best 66 on J962hh K river, dsAA held multi-way too, and AJJTT in 4! pot won on J-hi flop.

I think I’m close to playing like the best 1/2 plo5 card player I know. And he’s taking a break, thankfully for the rest of us!

KJT98 multi-way rivered nut boat, and then in limped pot QQ v. 88 Q83r got it in for $1,200 in a $30 pot. Flop went bet c/r 3! 4! 5!. …?! Holy smokes! V was probably tilted at me for beating him with AAT77cc on J42ccc, 5! Pot pre, all in flop, 7 ott, 2 otr. I didn’t see the board pair until he tabled J2 and then realized I rivered a bigger boat.
He got me with J2 2p earlier when I had AA nfd, so I said “Jack deuce isn’t gonna cut it this time.”

Started losing at 1/2 plo5 with AQQTTss on A95ss to A9 and 4!/gii with a low hand against AA so as not to play oop, a bluff was looked up, then left for 25/25/50 where I soon lost a bomb pot with top set and AKQJ2ds on K87r my bdfd to mid set, but made some with AJT97ds jammed pre and flopped 977 versus two Vs, one of who said he had AA. Big game went south and I quit up peanuts and headed to 1/2 again where I 3! dsAA held on an A-high flop and ended up making around $1,000 on the night somehow after a rough beginning.

I think 8 hour sessions are about the sweet spot for me, enough time to be dealt plenty of good hands and win but not so long that I begin to fatigue. I might even try a little shorter moving forward to see how I feel.

Slow session, mainly AA cracked three ways all in pre, headed elsewhere tonight to avoid very long waits at mgm, ended up in a lame must move so I quit to play the only other game with open seats, 1/3, where I saw this kid get his AA cracked and in a very similar fashion as mine…many years ago now…club flush when he had the nut flush blocker, same suite even…brought back memories!

Sorta card dead so far, stuck a little, biding my time. Definitely not as much action here compared to mgm. It’s ok, I needed a slow day, it’s been pretty exhausting these past couple weeks betting so big so often.

Sending it your way...!

Ended up on a slightly higher note, winning AAKQT on AJ3dd versus nfd. Also won AA > KK at a good 2/5 game while I waited for the plo to improve. I announced it was my last and and was dealt AA UTG...!, limped to trap the action and instead got the nit who raised, I l/rr, he shipped $750. I thought I was going to be stacked for sure, the curse of the rack lol. (I played a while longer so as not to hit and run.) Lost some playing heads up at plo too, getting dealt a bunch of trash while V was dealt good hands and smashing flops. Overall a sorta slow day. I needed an easy day anyway.

Woke up very tired for some reason, maybe the weather. Sorta want the month to be over so I am able to book the month on a record high note. Already at 250 hours, really don't need to play a lot more anyway.

Took a nap after celebrating dad's 70th (omg!) bday a few days early to accommodate sister's work schedule (she works a 9-5, thankfully from home). I get a lot of my work ethic and smarts from dad, a lifelong doctor and cancer researcher. (Unlike him, I didn't quite get through undergrad chemistry when I went to Cornell though). Family got into a political debate over dinner that I stayed out of entirely and just tried to keep the peace (who's worse, Trump or Biden...), but everyone made up by the end over dessert and wrapped up playing the game what do you meme again. I was totally beat after and took a nap even though I'd only been awake a few hours and had plenty of lattes. Just woke up after a sexy dream more refreshed, I was about to get ready to go out and play earlier but decided not to force it.

Given the stellar beginning of 2024, I think it's fair to adjust my annual goal up a notch but not get too greedy. We'll see how February and March go first. If they are anywhere near January, I will be stunned. Might even finally buy a home which was on my to do list last year but got pushed back after I realized all the condos I was interested in had high monthly HOA fees. Not interested in a house that is going to drain my savings, want something that will appreciate.

Had a tamer session last night, not a lot of money to be won anyway from the looks of the tables, booked a $575 win after all was said and done, mainly due to a dsAA holding multiway against he only action V who didn't last long. He got into a pissing match against some other guy who called $25 out of turn before V raised to $100 just before him, and V demanded the $25 be dead money. I got a floor ruling which sorted things out for the best, but not before the $25 guy cursed the other dude out.

Gambled my first (min) buy-in with QTT88 three ways and lost that, otherwise played snug. Bought in short at first as the table was all regs, but a few non-regs showed up and I topped off. Only played 4 hours too until the morning players started to show up (most of whom are quite nitty). Got plenty of sleep, trying to get more rest the last few days to make up for my hard work the rest of the month.

Good session, good games and ran well. K9877 3! pot flopped Q77,Q turn and 6 river versus Q6…! Lost AATT nfd to Q4Khh on Q43hh in 3! pot but overall did well despite that loss. Coaching continues, really enjoying the sessions.

My friend’s gf made this shark origami for me!

Just heard about yet another robbery of a poker player from MD Live, this time outside their house. As with the other examples over the past few months, the robbers targeted players who had won big. Just be aware of your surroundings, don't bring/flaunt large sums of money, use a box or similar akkount at the casino, or get a check cut. Do not talk to strangers on your way out, and do let them follow you to your room/parking. This random sweaty girl and her pimp approached me at the table last night and she said "ooh winner" "it's my bday" "wish me happy bday" and brushed my arm and I turned to her, gave her a little smile and wished her happy bday, turned my back around and that was IT.

Silly like a drunk fox!

Held my own today, played a little 5/T and got the double QQ>>AKo and then 1/2 plo hold em mix opened and won JT96ds all in pre and KKT9 top set versus ?? on K94r, the smaller plo5 was no good but thankfully a 25/25/50 plo5 seat opened up where I did so-so, got bluffed in a pretty big pot, then started running bad and left. Won a KK pre and split AKQT9 versus another AQ in 3! pot on QQJ. Not a bad night overall though.

Great thread!! Do you play poker apps? Would you take a stake?

I don't mess with online anymore, want to ensure game integrity most of all at this point and live is where it's at for that. If it's a trusted game I might dabble if it's juicy and big enough and I wasn't playing with my own money. I don't stake anyone else, I really want maximum control over my money as I feel like I make very good poker decisions.

Got a little out of line preflop once and ran trips into trips in a 3! pot, missed some nfd and gutters and pairs and the like against straights, lost KK to AA co v btn in straddled pot right after topping off, and lost AKcc on JT7cc in 3! pot at a low spr on both run outs to AJo…!! Trying to grind it back up at plo again now, bothersome start to the month!

Rampage's latest vlog where he plays plo as a noob made me lol, especially when he is dealt AA preflop and considers just folding (maybe in plo5, not plo4 man):

Lost all my 60/40s and 75/25s yesterday at plo, really annoying. Lost T9754sshh against AAT32 no flush draw on J95ss in 4! pot spr 2.5 for example. Lost J9764 on 953r versus AK952 as well. Lost AA pre against KJT99 for $1,100. At 2/5, got there against top set with 87dd on 6d9d2h and got paid but lost 88 v. AKo pre so broke even. Did not get a seat in the big plo game until the very end when they were about to break and just didn't take it, I was so annoyed with the host for asking every other player in the room if they wanted to play even though I was on the list and waiting all night. I suspect it's because I've been winning too much lately. Game looked so-so anyway, not a huge loss. Slept 20 hours, guess I needed it!

Still losing this month, but really a blip on the radar and how last month started too before that insane heater.

Running bad in a good game, got it in against action player with hands like AJT98ds and AKQ97ds - I really don’t mind doubling him up - and he woke up with actual hands a couple times, lost a dsAA pre for $900, lost top set nut straight and flush draw blockers to a wrap, and lost top set open ender to naked nut flush draw and mid set to wrap against same player. Just riding it out, at least the game is still decent.

Edit: fish quit time for a table change.

Just one of those sessions from hell where you run bad with your good hands and are otherwise card dead, what a bother. Doubled up the whale three times with A-hi rundowns and he miraculously had AA or KK (he gets it in and 3! with worse too). By the end the fish had left with my money and a slow dealer sat down and I had enough 15 hours in and less to show for it.

Noticing a little pattern emerging here, like getting it in with my nfd+pair+gutters at medium sprs, a little on the aggro side, maybe a symptom of winner's tilt as my friend suggested the other day, might want to tone down the aggression preflop moving forward before a little runbad turns into a major downswing. One time I got it in against the whale with AJ975 trip nut suited, a little light, even against someone like him, and AQT74 trip nut suit (granted it was against a blind open/jam). I've been sorta punting preflop lately. Definitely time to reign in the aggression.

Maybe even a little frustration seeping in not being dealt the premium hands as often the past few days.

Forgot to mention last night while in a hand multi-way a player bets first to act and the dealer says to him with action pending “nice hand,” taps the table and then adds“good bet.” :O I was in the hand as were others and we were like wtf?! lol’d to the guy next to me in the moment and said “I wish I could get congratulated when I bet!”

I play with a guy sometimes who is super cheerful and chatty when winning but sweating bullets when losing. You remind me of him a bit.

I generally keep my cool when losing, it’s getting easier as my bankroll grows. Back in the day when I was relatively poor and the money meant a lot more to me I was more visibly upset when I lost a pot. Now I lose much bigger pots and don’t really sweat it most of the time.
