1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Cool I also found 9 hours of Chopin and **** on Youtube and listen to that **** all them time.

I’m enjoying the classical playlist on my internet radio station a lot lately. Very calming. Sometimes I want heavy metal though. Slipnot etc.

Winning all my big draws against made hands or worse draws so far today, losing some big hand preflop spots but against relatively short stacks, made a couple bad lay downs too in smaller pots but it was only because my opponents were not valuing their relative hand strength appropriately under the circumstances and I leveled myself into thinking they were stronger than they were (and should have been, for the action). Still profiting extremely well. People have started commenting to me about how well I am running lately. The big games were running tonight but I did not bother joining this time, they looked so-so anyway and my game was much softer and very profitable.

If I can make just about as much as a decent night in the bigger games here with less risk, it seems like a no brainer to me. 😃

Reflecting today about the breakout start to the year, and realize it's mostly because I stopped working the day job and am focusing my energy on just poker. I am making better decisions at the table (for the most part, I do give action preflop sometimes) and the results are following. Happy I made the transition to full time, and now just wishing I'd made it sooner! Not playing the big mix helps, as does maximizing my playing time in my best game.

Overdue haircut today, gonna look fresh!

Ran ok today, lost with some draws, made a few hundo on the session. Given how I ran, a win is amazing.

Played at md live as lists at mgm were too long, dimly lit poker room as usual, saw an old poker acquaintance and talked, he said I was looking good (push ups ftw!), and he had been busy with business. Won some small pots but nothing huge, saw lists at mgm settled down and left for a brighter poker room with hopefully better games tonight.

Ran well to start there, got a compliment on my hair and beard trim, up another $1,500, rivering boats and getting paid, bluffs getting through, flopping boats in 3! pots against smaller boats like A5442 on 552 against KK22. Game slowed down so I left for 25/25 where it was really a nitfest, saw one hand go down Q74r 356 against QQ33 (I had 77 and folded to flop x/raise), 2 ott, A otr, $10k pot went to the wrap holder. Didn't seem like anything too out of line was happening so I left not long after arriving for 1/2 again, lost nfd top pair nut gutter bd wrap to mid set, lost inside wrap top pair and an over to top two, quit that game and transferred to one where I wasn't losing every pot, and there soon won KQJT6ds pre but didn't realize I went runner runner boat and almost folded the winner, only saw the flush on AKTQQhhh, apologized to the loser a shoe store owner, good guy. The game broke soon after I got there. At last table, lost nut wrap double bdfd to top and bottom pair but won an AA pre and the fun players left so I finally did too after a long 12-hour session that I should have wrapped up sooner when I was up $2k.

Sorta frustrating session yesterday (then slept all day), was very card dead and kept folding seemingly nonstop. Got an invite to the big mixed games (whale was playing), but declined. It was tempting when I was running bad at plo but not right now when I am on a heater. Played with a lady in black leather outfit and sunglasses, she normally plays 1/3 and was upset when her Q7 lost to JJ on J7Q7. She lost a small pot to me and she said "I'll meet you in a dark alley." She seemed like she wanted some male attention with her outfit so I replied, "you say that like it's a bad thing." She fist bumped me and said "that was good." "You're kinda cute in a sorta way." I replied she looked like Halle Berry in catwoman (seemed like compliment but what do I know). I started losing and left the table though and she said "he can go." ...

Folded some more in a good game with a big donor, finally got AJ986ds and shipped pre to get a side pot against a big gambler, she got it in with me for $1,200 with J7543 and she won. Won here and there and got AJT82ds and there was a 3! and we went multiway, TT5, shorty shipped, whale isolated $700, I ship $900 and lose to whale's T5. (He later did the same thing with AA nfd on J55 so my jam was very reasonable).Later got AQQds and raised, a 3! happened, donor flatted I made it $800 and he folded after a long tank, somewhat surprisingly. I won with trips versus the shorty on KT553, and someone who flatted the initial raise said they folded TT. After this hand after being down then up a little and now up almost $1,000 it was definitely time to go home after a 12-hour session.

Ram pretty meh at plo, finally threw in the towel 12 hours in for 5/T and most everyone snap quit when I got there. Grinding down some rec now trying to get a little more out of the hole. Lost AA pre, KK88 pre, AKQJ4ds pre, mostly getting it in good, all for stacks. Got outdrawn and draws missed. Usual way to lose, but only $1,200.

From the description it sounds like you moved to 5-T nlh. If they really snap quit you need to work on your image in that game. Did they bolt because you are seen as a total nit or as a total crusher?

I’m a tight winning player, not really a draw for the regs to stick around. They may have been getting ready to leave anyway. It’s ok the table filled up anyway. I don’t mind regs wanting to avoid me, it’s actually a good thing.

For all the runbad yesterday, it was a good time. Arrived 3:30am, played a little 2/5 while waiting for plo at a table that made me want to quit poker and reminded me why I am thankful I don't grind 2/5 anymore (utg limp raiser suggested he had TT...another player kept saying things like "QTo is a trash hand" and "I should have folded" top two on K42Q8 when he ran into 44). Summoned to plo (yay!), lots of raising and jamming from two short staks on tilt, getting it in with almost anything and I gambled with them whenever I was able to with something good-ish. Set up a raise/jam/re-jam with one of them, I min-raised he raised, we did a "secret handshake" lol and I jammed. We were having a good time. At one point this tight player flatted my open and said "I'll give you some action Johnny boy." I said I didn't want his action and he said "I just want to test a theory, someone said you were the best player at mgm." (I didn't mention my big mixed games results, lol.)

Got loads of sleep, very well rested and no headache I sometimes get after a long slumber. Doggo petting, lattes, music, good start to the day. Ahh...feel like it's gonna be a good day.

Just finished watching rampage's latest vlog about the hustler live stream . . . he was happy with how he played yet said things could have gone better . . . . I'll go with the latter (under)statement. Cannot fault the dude for pushing his limits like other vloggers have been doing lately, and he brings amazing entertainment value, but he needs to make serious adjustments to his strategy or he's going to go broke if he continues playing the nosebleeds, and who wants to watch him play 2/5 again i

Called it. Rampage on $1,000,000
Downswing and may be quitting. Should have listed to dumbo!

Maybe he's just running bad

Maybe he's just running bad

LOL.

Taking a break from a mediocre game, lost two pair fd to naked overpair in 4! pot, lost nut flush to rivered full house in 3! pot, swagger personality dude raises $10, I 3! to $15 mainly for information and he flats, says “John’s trying to measure dicks,” we chuckle, he folds flop and says “I guarantee I’d win.” I say we can go to the bathroom and find out (in my head)…lol. Don’t give me any ideas especially if you’re cute hehe.

You realize he has over 6 figures coming in monthly from raping his followers with high rake illegal app games right?

I mean he is part of some Poker stable I can't remember what it's called but he probably has backers and people supporting him too much to ever stop at this point.

I guess he had too much money and lost respect for it.

Played 10/10 big o with $50 straddle, ran really well when it counted, multi-way all in fest with AAKQ5 held on 999 flop no low, scooped AQ235ds to AA, lost 3/4 with AT72 to AT42 on AA8T3, got scooped in 3! pot with AAJ46 to AQ93 on JT285, but won some other pots to finish up good. Organizer said jokingly he never invites me anymore because I break the game. Nice little month I have going here now. And it’s not over yet! Using my box, came in handy tonight. Feel much safer traveling now.

Had weird dreams last night, guess that good win got into my head and I was overly energized in my sleep...first one I was worried I failed some exams and wouldn't have enough credits to graduate by the following year (recurring dream). Then I write a stellar English essay and my teacher tells me I was top 9% and she's "noiring" my essay, i.e., giving me an MGM black card as a reward. (But a plo5 rival player got top 6%, she told me....)

Then I am in a cathedral trying to turn on the lights with a group and a midget gets on top of the chandelier to try to rotate some light bulbs but someone pushes him off and he falls down.

Finally, I arrive in a kitchen and some students are cooking breakfast and I grab some, then a professor walks in and she says we are using her food she needs for her class later in the day, I say we should leave some money for her and she says good idea. Phew!

Market is steamrolling ahead...!

Your dreams sound almost as bizarre as mine.

Your dreams sound almost as bizarre as mine.

Do tell...what's the weirdest?

I forgot to mention last night a vet pro said there are no "best" big o players, and this guy pointed to me. Lol. (I was just running hot, still a somewhat big o newb here.) Veteran also said tournaments were like work, and he played poker so he didn't have to work.

Someone asked me about my gf, I said I was single, vet pro says don't assume gf these days, I say yeah, I'm a goat fukker. "New 2p2 username," someone added. Haha.

They are so bizarre I can't even begin to describe them. I used to be able to "pull up" the dreams I wanted from the past and lucid dream. Haven't tried the lucid dreaming in many years, and don't really have recurring dreams anymore.

I hope I make it to your area to play poker someday. Been wanting to forever, but don't travel that way much.

Stop by! It’ll be fun.

“Morning” latte for the win!

Exercise in, short jog in the brisk late winter air, squats + barbell. Sleep good, coffee good, gonna be a good day.

Dad said he has to go back into office 2-3 times a week now, rather than 1, with varying incentives or punishments (depending on how you look at it) depending on how often you are in the office. I am so glad I am not in a coercive employer-employee relationship anymore...! Most laborers are powerless, they don't make enough money and they can't escape their jobs either. The salaries most people get do NOT justify what they have to give in return. A very one-sided relationship. Self-employment for the win. The only good thing about my old job was that we were helping people who needed it. Everything else made it an unpleasant experience. Maybe it was for the best that I didn't get that new job I was so happy to get an offer for. This arrangement is better for my mental health for sure, not to mention my retirement savings - very empowering! I'm with the the veteran pro, I play poker so I don't have to work.
