1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

I’m embarking on a $100,000 bankroll challenge, my biggest challenge to date. I don’t want to predict how quickly I will complete it this time given that I’ve been running mediocre lately. Just felt like I needed another goal to get me out of the poker doldrums and keep up my motivation.

Given that I completed my $50,000 challenge in under a month my hopes are to finish this goal in two to three months, but only time will tell.

Gonna have a prediction challenge again for those of us on the rail? haha

Yes, good idea. Taking guesses until July 20. Closest without going over for when I’ll complete the challenge. Answers should be “month / date.” Example, “August 31.” Not “two months,” etc.

Prize is the same as last time: one free plo5 strat guide and a coaching session.

Thanks! Running meh today again, draws missing value not holding etc.

I made around $750 yesterday, not terrible given that I ran bad in the big pots. Raised pair+nfd for aside pot against wrap no pair and lost to V's bdfd, gii pair+nfd versus another wrap and a worse pair and he got there. Also playing a little off in certain spots lately due to the runbad, raised with a straight flush trying to target boats and killed my own action, checked trips on the flop allowing someone to turn a bigger boat, was worried about my kicker. At least my mistakes (if they are mistakes...not to be results oriented) are infrequent. Got really good sleep, woke up early with the sun, lattes and music now as usual. can't be too hard on myself, I am holding my own and winning this month even in a rough patch, and that takes a lot of skill and a great mental game.

Br challenge: $99,250 to go.

Keep it up Dumbo! Excited to follow along this new challange.

Thanks! You’ve been great to work with.

All the run bad lately has started to take its toll and I got a little too aggro in certain spots today, started my session losing top set to middle set and gutshot…still winning a little but not as much as I could have. Gonna finish strong and play disciplined.

Game got good all of a sudden and I was able to finish strong, up $2,500! Very proud of myself for wrapping up well and powering through when the game got good. Iced coffee helped.

Challenge: $96,750 to go. Now some well deserved rest.

Had a somewhat rough sleep, woke up with an racing heart rate at one point and some fleeting chest pain but eventually got to bed, maybe related to playing a few long sessions in a row. At least I was greeted in the morning by some beautiful sunny weather! Also feels good to wake up after booking a nice win. Now for some lattes, music, exercise, sunlight, and grind.

If I am going to complete this challenge in a reasonable period I need to start caring about $100/$200/$300+ bets. I’ve noticed lately I don’t care about the money enough and this can lead to small losses here and there and occasional loose calls that really add up over time. Money saved is money earned. Honestly if I am being self-critical (which I am), this is probably a big reason why I am not doing as well thus far this month. I am also losing a lot of big all ins as a favorite, but that’s only part of the story. Tighten up Butter cup. . . !

Won top pair nut wrap three ways, double gutter set draw plus nfd to top two wrap heads up, booked a $1,600 win in my short afternoon session. Took a nap and recharged for another dip, needed it after a rough sleep last night. Important not to overdo it, sometimes we just need a break.

br challenge: $95,150 left.

Evening session was very slow, quite card dead, ended up posting a $200 loss or so. Been getting a lot of compliments lately on my game again which is always nice as well.

Woke up a little earlier than expected today, my body is probably used to being awake certain times by now so I'm still adjusting. The schedule of a poker player!

$95,350 left.

Had a really great breakthrough coaching session with toondawg, then hit the felt and played the mix a little, won a pat 9 in single draw to a 7 draw.

Plo going smoothly so far, one of my good friends who I’ve helped improve and sold my strat guide to is having his best month ever, which is awesome. Feeling really happy I’ve been able to help people get better at this game and make a positive difference in their lives…!

Lost with AA nfd in 3! pot at 1/2 plo, grinded it back some and made a little, then left for 5/5 plo which looked like a better game, won dsAA in 4! pot, lost mega wrap to ?? on board pairing runout, lost with top two to a gutshot once and nut flush to bottom set called a big turn bet, both got there by this calling station who once said he could see me in a straight jacket (...). Booked an over $2.2k win on the day when all was said and done.

challenge: $93,150 to go. Still taking guesses until July 20th!

Good sleep for a change (phew!), solid 9+ hours, woke up to sunny day and music and lattes = happy dumbo.

lol, you know I’m over $90,000 away from my goal right?

Running decently today, 5/5 running again. Great pre-session routine helped put me in a solid mental state. Had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Iced coffee to top it off. Nice!

Had a nice session across the board, ended up booking wins in every stake I played (I played bigger as soon as a seat opened up until the game broke or I got too tired). Open ender nfd+top pair beat bottom set twice, AQ877ds beat AKQT3 twice all in pre, among others. QQ in bomb pot chopped with inside wrap gutter and nfd, V flatted my flop raise and when I potted turn asked if I wanted to just play for what was in the middle and run it twice, I said I would run it twice if he put me all in for my last $750 or so, he obliged and he won the first runout but I won the second. Incidentally, he'd been running it once all night with everyone else, lol. (And someone folded mid set which would have given them quads on the second river, and I would have been scooped.)

Won $6,700 when all was said and done. Very nice come up for the middle of the month and putting me back on track for where I want to be in terms of hourly and monthly profits.

br challenge: $86,450 to go.

Solid 9+ hours of sleep, lattes and music and sunlight to start my day, and I picked up a new student in my poker room to boot and sold a strat guide! Looking up.

Good job Dumbo. Love the fact that you're resting as you need it and not pushing too hard. Marathon not a race!

Gonna out in my guess of Sept 13th.

Thanks, I really try to take good care of myself so I am in peak condition when I play. Sorta like an athlete I suppose. Session starting well so far, JJ got three streets from 88 on AJ386.

Hopped in an amazing looking 10/25/50 and it quickly turned into nonstop double board plo bomb pots. I was spot dead and card dead sadly, flopped a couple meh one way hands and didnÂ’t really get anything going. Pretty new to these double boards but from what little I know you want good equity on both boards or a lock on one and I almost never had that. Chopped flopping a straight flush once at least. My friend bought half my action too. Now back at ploÂ….

Got a solid 10 hours of sleep (let's gooo!!! lol, the things that get me pumped up), woke up a little later than usual due to a late session, but game was very above average, ended up making $820 on the day despite the modest loss at the $100 ante bomb pot game. Was playing with a legend who frequents the big hold 'em game often, he called my initial $200 raise, 4! to $2,500 all in, and a a 5! into a dry side pot for $9,000 with 72s. (We both had AKo so he was actually a favorite, Mike Postle!).

br challenge: $85,630 to go. On track! 15% there already just a few days in. I am feeling confident about this one! Some good guesses so far.

Ran well, made $3,640 at 1/2 plo in 7.5 hours, br challange: $81,990 to go. Lock in your guesses by the 20th! Played a shorter session just to treat myself and relax, game was still decent but I need to take care of myself and I wanted to wake up earlier during the day again, had a late start last night. Healthy habits #1!

Woke up early as sorta planned (albeit much earlier than expected), not a ton of sleep but I’ll get to bed early tonight. Feel good enough to function. A solid pre-session routine this morning will help me stay disciplined.

Games look mediocre to bad right now unfortunately, hopefully things pick up later in the afternoon. Lots of nitty retirees and 2/5 grinders. The downside of an early rise is that the games are not as good. Aways a cost to a better schedule and healthier lifestyle. Can’t have it all.

On the bright side, getting some nice reviews in my coaching thread lately!

Edit: was about to be called for open plo game but they were about to open a new game with better players so I asked to wait for the new game, it looks juicy!! Got a seat. Think smart. Game select!

Started running well but then took a bit of a nosedive running big and wrap fd plus pair into set and better fd, may have gone a bit off the reserve with my non nut draw, and losing with top set to fd. Took a break to eat and come back fresh. Felt I was starting to steam a little and I got thrown a couple slow rolls too. Being overly aggro with that draw probably could have flatted and played rivers perfectly. I blame getting only 4.5 hours of sleep.

Making a good comeback, game got better with a couple gamblers. Got invite for seat in big game but it’s mediocre and I’m very tired so will likely pass this time. Better not to play such a big game on very low battery.

Double board bomb pots now at MGM National Harbor???
