1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
I probably made some drawing mistakes in badeucy with a really good starting hand 235r in a big pot tonight and it may have cost me. Also lost with AA to KK in stud 8. I was very mad at myself and quit for plo. Trying to get into a better mood but this mix session already spoiled it. I feel like my intelligence has dropped over the past few years and IÂ’m not learning as quickly as I used to and perhaps even getting worse at the game. My friend said some of my plays in plo are things I wouldnÂ’t have done at my peak. This would not surprise me as cognitive decline occurs in patients with schizophrenia fairly often. IÂ’ve been playing mix for a couple years now with about 750 hours logged and I should be better by now. I’m also missing things in plo more like reading my hand. I was doing better at plo this far in for sure years ago. It makes me sorta sad to be honest.
Edit: just checked my stats and by hours played I am actually doing better at 20/40 mix compared to plo…sweet!
3! KKJT7ds against whale ep open he flats flop 732r one bdfd he pots $105 $550 eff. I just rip to deny equity from his draws like 45 etc. but I stepped in it as he had A9633. Faaak.
Dumbo I hve to ask if you ever take days off? I used to play for primary income
for many years and I found 4-5 days a week was the most I could handle and still play at the top of my game.

I hardly take any days off. Sometimes I sleep extra long the night after a bender but of course that doesn’t really count. I don’t know what I would do with my time outside of poker anyway.
What did you used to do during your days off? I don’t watch tv see movies or read much. I don’t have a significant other to do activities with either.
Maybe I should consider taking days off to improve my performance?
Won a few grand at plo in the end, 99875ds 456r beat ?? Against same guy who flopped a set against my KK, and AAQ87ss held three ways all in pre.
A for table presence. Couple sat at my table and I just sat out until I got my table transfer.

Well I've been married for nearly 50 years so the relationship obviously took up time on my days off, also played a lot of golf (which usually involved bets so not a day off from gambling but a day off from the mental grind of poker).
I definitely think you should consider ways to take days off. GL
I agree that you should absolutely take at least one day off per week. It's good for everyone. Run errands, go for a hike, go to a museum, have a nice lunch/brunch, go walk shelter dogs!!! Whatever -- just don't play poker 😉
Woke up to some weird chest pain, think it was just gas though. Got around 10 hours of sleep albeit a little choppier than usual, enjoying chocolate lattes and a little overcast light through the windows and music (say when, the fray, breathe me, sia). Massage and rowing later.
Last night sat out as soon as the couple joined each other, played a hand or two when he left, won a smaller pot against a grinder, husband came back and I sat out again. Husband and grinder ask that my name in the bravo system be put in lobby so my clock is ticking for when I get picked up and I don’t get comps…felt bad for the grinder because he didn’t know why I was sitting out. My table transfer came in not long after anyway and I moved to a better game without the couple.
Started the session drilling more preflop ranges and running into quads with top boat but I won a side pot and made a little money anyway with A8765ds on 84468. The night is young. My chest pain came back after I ate but it may just be heartburn. Or microplastics. Missed out on the two action players who quit before I got a seat.
Feeling a little off today due to interrupted sleep, wasnÂ’t really feeling like playing. My mom’s lentils and broccoli probably the culprit!

I agree wholeheartedly with the above. At first you may need to schedule days-off, then you'll probably fall into them naturally. Full-time poker can be very intense and monotonous. I'm not one for platitudes but "variety is the spice of life" still retains some meaning.
What activities do poker players do that aren’t poker? I need ideas if I’m really gonna try this.
I’m frugal so emphasis on activities that don’t cost money!
I've been playing full-time for the last 6 months in a location away from friends and family, so understand what it's like to play 20+ days in a row. I really struggled at first because if I was playing in my hometown there would be more natural breaks (e.g. social and family stuff, gigs and so on).
I have multiple books on the go, so can spend a day reading fiction and cooking. Check out unfamiliar areas of your neighborhood. Actually planning a day trip to a museum sounds old-school and boring but you might be surprised. Maybe you could look at doing pro bono legal work again?
Running hot again!! Biggest was AAQQTds 4! pot low spr got it in on T42hh flop and held on A2 runout (faded the heart). Woohoo!

Dumbo does France!
Many years ago I visited France with my family. We stayed in a little hotel in downtown Paris across from a cafe where I proudly ordered my espresso every day in broken French (I took a semester in college). It’s a busy vibrant city with people constantly walking the streets, not unlike New York just a little less congested. There’s a little more poop and pee on the streets though.
One night my parents let me go out on my own and see the city and I happened upon a bar. I was a 20-something young good looking guy and it didn’t take long before I got to talking with a woman at the bar drinking a vodka. She had really bad teeth that were gray and has little seeds in between them like she forgot to floss. Anyway by now I was completely out anyway and not even flirting with that idea. After some small talk things took a different turn and o broke the news to her, “I’m gay,” I said. She was a little stunned at first and then became upset and spat out “your watch is ugly.” I don’t know why she decided to call out my watch in the moment I guess that was the best she could do after getting the bad news.
She left and the cute bartender must have been listening to all this because he asked me if I wanted to join him and his friends at an after hours cigar bar after closing. I agreed and we went over there. I don’t remember walking there with him but it must not have been too far away. We get to the golden colored joint with cigar boxes lining the walls and we’re all sitting on comfy chairs chatting, I can pick up very little of the French. I am just there to be a spectacle American tourist probably. Anyway at some point one of the guys there says in English, “so you’re American? Do you have elephant penis?” Everyone laughed. Eventually we all left and I said goodbye to the bartender a little disappointedly never to see him again.
The hotel played straight porn late at night on public TV, apparently that’s a thing in France. I flipped through the channels but couldn’t keep it on long since my sister and I were sharing the same room and it was too awkward.
The next day I order a baguette from a bakery in broken French and the cashier is very abrupt with me and corrects me and I feel like an idiot. That pretty much sums up my trip to France.
No terrible indigestion woke me up last night, thankfully! Sound sleep. Chocolattes music (warm whispers, missy higgens, volcano, Damien rice ), then rowing and massage.
Let’s keep up this little heater I have going for myself!! Finish the year strong maybe make a president’s salary.
Running decently tonight again, lost at 2/5 KQs in 4! pot to AA but winning at plo and mix. Made a mistake at mix in Badacey and drew 3 with A3 instead of raising and drawing 2 with A73. Otherwise played well. Actually got dealt a pat #2 in 2-7 single draw!
I am lucky and get to go to Paris every year for a conference -- and my husband comes with me. Even better, it's during our anniversary, so we usually stay a few extra days. We love Paris. My husband speaks French pretty well -- thank goodness my conference is international so it's in English 😉 We were just there in October.
We've actually played poker, including PLO, a few times in Paris, but the rake is unbeatable. Very fun, though. Didn't play this year.

Have you visited the Louvre yet? That museum that looks like a train station was awesome too. Amazing artwork and architecture.

Yes. We've been going for at least10 years. We've been all over the city and to many museums, etc., although I'm not a museum fan. My husband is, though, and he loves reading every plaque we come to -- in French 😉 I usually wait for him at a nearby café with a pastis or a glass of wine 😉
That sounds absolutely amazing! I would love to sit in a French cafe again someday.
Today has been slow, lost AT744 to 5TT74 on 455’which was a real bummer and AAQQ3 to a flush draw on KQ2hh. Down just a little on the session, winning enough pots to make up for the runbad.

Edit: lost AT744 to TT753. I was 67|33.
I know you've been playing long enough to know that losing a 2-1 spot is insignificant 😃 When you are running bad it seems like it always goes that way but you are running at least average from what you report on here 😀
I made a good play that hand and check raised all in. It’s a hand that you want to be up against one player but not two and preferably at a low spr. Unfortunate to lose regardless.
I’m under no delusions that I’ve run well enough in my lifetime…!
Just lost AA644ds in 3! pot to whale T9855 T94hhs both my fds turn 5s bringing my bdnfd too…lost a $4,500 pot and I was about to quit my session…bleh …
Gross. The variance in that game is sick.
