British Politics
Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.
hey guys italy just edged out per capita gdp above yours. And we are a failed country with an immense number of corrupt parasites with 0 civic sense and 0 work ethics. We are the blue line you are the green one
50 years of thatcherism has been an epic disaster long past time for something different
A former cabinet minister has said the UK government is “digging itself into a hole” over Palestine Action and fellow Labour peers and MPs were regretting voting to ban the group.
The warning by Peter Hain, who opposed proscription, came as a Labour backbencher who supported it said the issue would arise again when parliament returned in September.
Lord Hain, who was a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and the Anti-Nazi League in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s, was lacerating about the response to recent protests in support of Palestine Action.
“It will end in tears for the government,” he said. “We are seeing retired magistrates, retired and serving doctors and all sorts of people being arrested and now effectively being equated with terrorists such as al-Qaida, which is absolutely wrong.

Bbc has a piece on such an initiative by Surrey police.
I don't think Peter Hain is correct. All of Palestine Action's stunts are criminal. They exist for no other purpose but recreational crime which has no possible bearing or effect on the Gaza war. Once they attacked British military aircraft at a British military base they had to be outlawed. The legislation available is anti-terrorist legislation, so that's what was used, and it's arguably appropriate to a treasonous attack on our defence forces.
If a bunch of elderly crank-left Guardian readers want to get criminal records for supporting these performative bourgeois goons, I'm not really seeing the downside.

The American headline is misleading. The 18 arrests during the one-month exercise were for sexual assault, harassment and theft, not for 'hitting on' the female officers. Harassment of women out jogging (weirdly often it takes the form of spitting or tripping, I suppose because they're moving too fast for the usual grope attack that such men go in for) is a persistent anti-social problem. I doubt the officers did anything that would amount to entrapment.
Yet cabinet members openly express their support for the Suffragettes who ran an actual bombing and arson campaign.
If you can’t see the proscription of PA for what it is - the UK following orders from the US again - I don’t know what to say.

A similar horrible exercise was carried out once in Charing X station in the 80s when a friend of mine (who's sadly no longer with us) noticed a wrap on the ground and when he went to pick it up was jumped on by two coppers and arrested for possession of amphetamines. Fortunately the incompetence and stupidity of the arresting officers saw them contradict each other in court and the case was thrown out by the judge.
The police are famed for such tactics, leading to easy arrests and convictions that boost their terrible numbers. In the case of the Surrey "joggers" the far right have condemned it as a devious ploy by the notoriously leftist Met Police (lol):

In italy we never have this stuff, outside of one specific area of society. Police does that for subversive elements of society, akin to how the fed "entraps" potential domestic terrorists. They propose to , say, sell guns to them (guns are very hard to come by in Italy), and they arrest them all when they try to buy them.
But for drugs, sexual harassment (lol) and other routine daily things, i never heard of anything of the sort so i was dubious it was some fabrication of the media.

The Suffragettes are no longer a present threat, and haven't been for over a century, so people can safely pretend irrelevant nostalgic support for them. The WSPU was not outlawed in itself, no such legislation existing, but its few hundred members were regularly arrested, sometimes en masse, as they very effectively were the day of the Battle of Downing Street.
From August 1914, far from attacking military bases, the WSPU strongly supported the war effort and urged all women to do so. (They received a large government grant in recognition of this.)
Several ex-Suffragettes later joined Mosley's British Union of Fascists, including Mary Richardson, slasher of Velasquez's Venus, who was head of the BUF's women's section. The BUF was not banned, but was effectively broken by the Public Order Act 1936, which outlawed political uniforms. Once Mosley's goons couldn't play soldiers they lost interest.

You clearly regard sexual harassment as a joke, and I’ll cut you the slack of coming from a culture where women are brought up to expect unwanted sexual comments thrown at them and probably parts of their bodies touched too, but here as in other more Anglo Saxon cultures women expect to be treated with respect.
Badenoch refuses to sack London Tory leader backing mass deportations
This is where we’re heading, isn’t it? America will lead the way as usual and this little shithole of a country will use that as an excuse to follow suit, probably.
Going to be interesting to see how they avoid deporting prominent Tories who weren’t born here. Zahawi and Johnson were both born abroad so I expect it’ll be people of Pakistani heritage who will be explicitly targeted, staring with first generation immigrants and proceeding as far back as public opinion allows.

it is compared to planning to overthrow the gvmnt of assassinating all the members of the supreme court or that level of things yes.
you cannot comment from the UK given your country allowed tens of thousands of British girls to be raped hundreds of time each by gangs of Pakistani immigrants for more than a decade because it would have been racist to persecute them for that.
that is possibly the worst western mass raping event in history after Catholic church pedophile raping, but it happened like yesterday, so it's pretty gross for you to claim your country gives a flying **** to women body sexual autonomy.
Luciom logic: It's fine to laugh at sexual harassment because [something about historic cases of rape in the UK].

no that was the answer to your claim that my take is based on Italian culture. Italian culture wouldn't have allowed the rapes your culture allowed.
sexual harassment is a joke compared to actual subversive violent crimes that put the very existence of the state at risk.
especially sexual harassment as defined today by people like you, which includes behavior that shouldn't be criminalized at all.
We realise you think sexual harassment is a joke. You even stated it twice.
At the risk of sounding like Norman Tebbit, if you're living in poverty, one of the last things you should be doing is buying takeaway food. I noticed it walking through South Shields on holiday last month, and again through Turnpike Lane this evening: these places are crawling with fast-food joints. If you're poor, you buy rice and vegetables and figure out how to cook them, right? Not doing so is a lack of basic education, right? Am I missing something?
Do you have kids?
Good answer IMO.
Tebbit was a
boy. That's the Falcon pub on the right. Long gone, of course.

DNA recovered from skeletons buried in a 7th-century cemetery on the south coast of England has revealed that the buried individuals had west African ancestry, raising further questions about early medieval migrations to Europe.
Archaeologists documented significant migration during this period into England from continental northern Europe, with historical accounts describing the settlement of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.
However, the extent of movement from further afield has remained unclear.
To further understand early medieval migration in Europe, researchers performed DNA analysis on individuals buried at two 7th-century cemeteries on England’s south coast – at Updown in Kent, and Worth Matravers in Dorset.
The findings, published in two studies in the journal Antiquity , show clear signs of non-European ancestry in two buried individuals with an affinity to present-day groups living in sub-Saharan west Africa.
While most of the individuals buried at the cemeteries had either northern European or western British and Irish ancestry, one person at each cemetery had a recent ancestor from west Africa, scientists said.

The Romans had some West African ancestry. Wouldn't the most reasonable explanation be they brought some West African ancestry with them during their invasions?
