The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

No, it is not remotely close to "at least as bad". Sure China respond with tariffs on canola oil and a few other things, and that stings, but it is a tiny fraction of the economic damage done by the US. There is also the politics. Canada and the US are - supposedly - close allies. China is an adversary. The adversary doing bad things to us is expected. The friend doing bad thin

we are literally in constant negotiations with US over last 100+ years. They just broke all those terms and are openly threatening to annex us. Arguing that Canada is escalating by not rolling over is a weird take by some ITT.

Tanking the economy and picking a fight with our allies to own the libs

i think we're all in the golden shower now baby. Trumps fantasy playing out.

I wonder if a tipping point is coming, or may already be here.

All the tariff stuff was meant to force manufacturers (auto et al) to relocate some or all of their production from Mexico and Canada to the US. The lure being that the USA is going to off/on and up /down tariffs on other countries in such an unpredictable manner as to create economic uncertainty that would promote the USA as the only safe haven for business.

But, in order for this to work Trump has to convince global businesses that Canada/Mexico/China (and now Japan), etc = unstable and the USA =stable. But, what happens when businesses don't exactly see the US as the safe haven that Trump claims it is, or will become? What if the USA that is not looking stable, and that everywhere is looking unstable.

It would seem that manufactures will just wait it out. No expansion and no movement. R and D goes down as well.....

Especially, in the case of the auto industry, when they are told they better make up their mind by April 2, 2025.

Great job Doug Ford!! But hey at least he won a majority an I right.

I have no issue at all with what Doug Ford did here. Zero.

Yes some businesses will be forced to move operations to the USA but its a small fraction. Try moving an auto plant or steel mill or aluminum factory that will take years and billions . No way the auto sector does that . Look at refining crude to convert those refineries from heavy crude to light crude will take 2-3 years and billions

It may be cheaper just to take out the president

I think its a better strategy than tariffs

Source all i could find was Ford will not back down . Bad move by him if he does

For Canada, it is also not good that this is going on right before an election. As the political leaders are going to be campaigning instead of necessarily doing what is best for Canada. This is an unfortunate thing that happens with all democracies.

Meh it’s just like a month …
Trump is 4 freakn years .

And regardless what our politicians can do for Canada best interest , we still get more facked by stupid trump .

Trump forced Canada to have 88 in blackjack.
Our expectation are limited regardless we are into an election year or not .

This is a poker forum. You guys should understand the basic concepts of sometimes showing strength, of sometimes folding, etc. Like earlier shifty was loling that Ford was doing something fairly minor with alcohol sales. Then he is lolling that Ford was doing something more major. Then lozen is getting mad if he backs down after Trump's escalates but then it leads to promises of further talks.

These moves aren't the end of the game. There are many more hands to play. Just relax and stop trying to say everything is obviously bad always every time if it is done by a Canadian.

This is a poker forum. Game selection is important, Doug Ford vs USA is like a micro stakes player playing Phil Ivey heads up. It's not going to end well for the micro stakes player

Ya buddy if we could choose not to play this game we absolutely would. It's entirely your team's fault we are where we are. But that doesn't mean folding every hand is the only play.

Of course you thought we just had to SECURE THE BORDER but then the already small 1% amount of fentanyl was reduced by 97% to 13 grams and suddenly the trade war is still here and worse?!?!? How could you have guided us so wrong?

No Ford now has shown if we put tariffs or taxes in place Trump just needs to double them and we back off

Ok. Trump has threatened things and backed off many times. Heck he appears to have just backed off again. As have we. There is some obvious back and forth dynamics here. And gains! The current talks being proposed now might be a path forward. I don't know. It's very hard to evaluate. What isn't helpful is when Canadians attack Canadians in these silly and simplistic terms that you can't ever threaten anything ever and just have to fold every time and take it.

trumps tweet today pretty much threatened war and I bet not one European nation has condemned what he said publicly. The world is so afraid to poke the angryman. we might be on our own

The only way to stop trump is with the stock market. its why hes backed off canada like 5 times

Yeah that one baffles me as well . Maybe with Justin gone and Carney keeps Freeland away from him things change . Boo on our NATO allies

Yup

Watching some of the news broadcasts and all I hear is Rob ford caved .

Though DJT saying a strong man made the right decision ....

Steel and aluminum tariffs enacted. Feds counter with another 30 of tariffs. The real question is April 2 imo.

Ok great, EU slaps reciprical tariffs on US for steel and aluminum as well. This is really important. While these hurt Canada much more than european countries, having everyone hurt by the tariff means canada doesn't ALSO have a competitive disadvantage, and having them countertarriff as well makes it somewhat less likely that Trump specifically focuses counter counter tariffs (like the doug ford situation) on us.

Congress would have to declare war. Can you imagine discussions in the House and Senate for a rationale to go to war with Canada? Not Iraq, or Iran or Russia, but Canada?

Threatening to cut electricity to innocent citizens could also been see as an act of war.
