The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Freeland negotiated that for Justin and its basically the same deal

Lol. Right. Anything good Trudeau did all the props go to Freeland. Anything bad Trudeau did all the blame goes to Trudeau.

Can we just say "the liberals" did a great job getting that passed? All this talk from conservatives about liberals ignoring interprovincial trade, like no they made huge strides forward on it. You can say not enough, but can't say ignored.

Prediction: Prior to the election, Carney can't really dramatically change cabinet because its the same slate of people and why change things just to cause chaos in the short days/weeks before an election. Nevertheless, conservatives will (are) going to endlessly act like this means he is exactly like Trudeau when no, no, no, nothing about his messaging thus far indicates that.

100%

I do a lot of work for a certain cabinet minister (non-political work, likely to grow under Con gov FWIW) and was just thinking that I hope there is no shuffle but that this is an unavoidable trap for Carney

That's cool. I'd love to hear any perspectives you have from that work that you're comfortable sharing.

by ligastar

why did Carney come straight out poking the bear?

that isn't the tact you want to take w DJT, no?

well it is if you want to win an election in Canada

the speech was made after his election victory

that was just the internal liberal party election. There is national election that has to happen before end of October.

BTW I am hearing he is going to call it next week and the tentative election day is going to be May 5th

I heard the same

ahh ok

Omg the Charest choice is not good.

Timing makes sense. It would be super awkward to wait until the 24th and have someone else have to read a throne speech that gets defeated....if that is the path just call it the week earlier.

It's shown me how difficult the job of the Feds here is in this country. Despite some suggestions that the current government is a woke socialist mafia that lives to oppress, I've seen a government that is full of decent and intelligent people that are doing their best and are representative of Canadians.

I think criticism comes from trying to please everyone and negotiate every decision, sometimes at the cost of the bigger policy framework. I completely respect the principles and values that guide this kind of consultation (see environment regulation, Indigenous involvement in energy infrastructure etc) but I feel like it has slowed down development. Some of this is further complicated by the Provincial fiefdoms and limitations to Federal power.

My perspective is that Canada really needs to push resource and infrastructure development and build out the vertical industries of its natural advantages. And obviously diversify its markets. Carney seems like a great economy first leader with good integrity and values so I'm hopeful that he gets some runway.

Also I have learned that government IT systems are god awful. I would be all for a DOGE style IT update of the entire government.

He almost has to choose a new cabinet or your right the Conservatives will say he is just like Trudeau. I was watching the Front Page and one of them was saying that Carney has instructed that he is never moving forward to be in the same picture with Justin

Its a campaign the conservatives will point out the fact he is not even a true CDN with 3 passports just like the Liberals did with Scheer.

Love the Liberal Campaign add making it sound that Pierre will remove the border and do whatever Trump says

I think in many cases those that hold extreme views like this of institutions would see them dissolve after a short time working with them in the real world.

Same for those that indulge in conspiracies around central banking, academia, health policy, etc.

It isn't getting the press or the political reaction as the Trump tariffs, but Canada quietly in an escalating trade war with China at least as bad as the one with the US.

For years China has strategically been destroying key Western industries by heavily subsidizing specific industries, selling products at uncompetitively low prices (in fairness those products might actually be higher quality on top of being uncompetitively priced lower) and flooding the market, driving prices even lower.

Currently, China is using this strategy with EV cars, and by all accounts it is working well, as they are taking over much of the 3rd world markets. Canada (along with the US and EU) has put up tariffs to combat this, and China is retaliating with tariffs on Canadian imports. Of course in this case Canada is on the opposite end of the trade imbalance as they are with the US, as they import much more than they export to China. So the leverage is different.

Still, interesting to note the vast disparity in how this "trade war" is politicized compared to the one with the US. You certainly dont see Canadian politicians doing press conferences declaring how they are going to go after their political enemies in China.

Only one country has publicly threatened our sovereignty...

Only one country has publicly threatened our sovereignty...

Well, Trump's basic premise is the rest of the West should allow themselves to be subsumed by the US (under his leadership) to be competitive with China. For a long time (the last 500 years or so) Western society being organized into small units under hyper competitive mostly free market situations was arguably beneficial; as Western dynamism and innovation allowed the West to dominate large centralized stagnation empires such as in China, Iran, Turkey and India.

Now that most Western societies have basically becoming socialist, over regulated social welfare states, they are still divided, but without the dynamism and ingenuity. And except for the US they are mostly stagnant and uncompetitive with the rest of the world. And even US competitiveness is declining.

Canada can maintain its autonomy if it is that important. And declare economic war on the US. But under these conditions I would not expect to be winning trade wars with China. And I am not sure turning towards the EU is going to work either. For all the current rhetoric of becoming more dynamic, there is no indication European countries are going to do what is necessary to actually achieve this. They seem to be too addicted to their stifling regulations and social welfare programs and open borders (bringing in more welfare recipients); which are incompatible with increasing their competitiveness on the world stage.

Trump doubles steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%. Insanity.

Never forget lozen thought Trump would be “good for Canada”.

For good or bad Trump sees himself as a Tony Soprano type mob boss, and sees western nations like Canada as rebellious lieutenants who are not showing proper deference publicly, and need to be put in place. The worst thing you can do as a member of a mafia family is show division and fight in public.

Compare what is happening with Canada to Israel and Mexico. They are playing the game with him and showing proper deference in public (even if they are standing up to themselves behind the scenes) and getting much better results.

FWIW he also sees Putin and Xi as bosses of other families, and treats them outward respect accordingly.

Now I am not saying this is a defense, I am just describing what seems to be happening. FWIW I dont think democratic nations should be run like mafia families.

Yes and I have admitted I was wrong while you still insist Trudeau has done a great job

But they make a better EV. Canada subsidizes the EV market as well with rebates and also the billions for EV battery plants . Sadly Canada needs a trading partner and that may have to be China

For Canada, it is also not good that this is going on right before an election. As the political leaders are going to be campaigning instead of necessarily doing what is best for Canada. This is an unfortunate thing that happens with all democracies.

What is Canada going to offer China? They don’t need or want Canadian exports. Trudeau tried to negotiate them importing more to address the trade imbalance, and they told him to get lost.

Well Trudeau has had a rocky path with China just as he has had with the USA . China needs our coal and USA coal which ships through Canadian ports as the west coast of the USA has banned it. Many of our farm products go to China as well.

50% on steel and aluminum is going to kill the USA . I like Fords strategy . The one big thing we could hold back is Potash . As much as I am not voting for Carney I think Canada is better off with him that Justin negotiating

No, it is not remotely close to "at least as bad". Sure China respond with tariffs on canola oil and a few other things, and that stings, but it is a tiny fraction of the economic damage done by the US.

There is also the politics. Canada and the US are - supposedly - close allies. China is an adversary. The adversary doing bad things to us is expected. The friend doing bad things - much worse things - is outrageous.
