The "LOLCANADA" thread...again

So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet...i'd be shocked if they lost the election now.

Just shows just how incompetent Conservatives are.

Simmering issue in BC conservatives for a while. For a long time BC united was the de facto right wing party and BC conservatives a far right fringe. Then there was a pretty incrediablt flipping and BC conservatives became the “mainstream” right wing party and absorbed a lot of BC united as they rose to nearly winning. But that far right fringe was still there, just now in the mainstream right party, and it’s caused friction. What do you do with the most egregious racist and anti vaxxer types? It was already problematic during the election and they may well have beat the NDP but for this. One of the more problematic candidates who Rustad had denounced ended up winning and sticking around.

So the news story today is one said a particularly vile and horrible things, and so what do you do? Well she was voted out of caucus, and two more resigned in protest.

Growing pains.

Lmao called it. Remember when shifty was all SECURE THE BORDER only after Trump said it? And I pointed out how impossible this was for our 8k+ border, and that things like the black hawk helicopters was just for show to try and appease Trump.

Well for all those millions spent and hours in the air flying up and down - the black hawks caught one person. One. Secure the border my ass.

Canadian farm and food products

BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday announced retaliatory tariffs on some Canadian farm and food imports, after Canada imposed duties in October on Chinese-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.

The new duties become effective March 20, according to a statement by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council. Additional 100% tariffs will be imposed on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes and peas, and additional 25% tariffs will apply to pork and aquatic products.

In some ways Canada is a bit of a hypocrite . Their are industries it will fight tooth and nail for . They are very protective of all dairy products when I think yeah let the milk and cheese in Im still buying CDN milk . Actually i buy from a local farm .

The electric car one I just do not understand . They by far build the best electric car and at a price that the average person could afford . Sadly if the USA proceeds with Tariffs it may need China more and more as a trading partner

Electric cars are a great example of why tariffs aren't universally good or bad, but something that sometimes make sense and sometimes don't make sense. Cars are a major NA industry, and having the market flooded with cheap chinese EVs IS something that threatens the development of a NA industry. So having Canada and the US band together to impose a NA tariff on China to give time for the NA market to become entrenched made a lot of sense. It's working WITH the americans to be at the same policy level as the americans to do a targeted protection of the industry. You don't have to completely agree with that to see that it makes VASTLY more sense than an across the board attack against your economic/political/military closest ally.

Yup those tariffs against China done to be in conjunction with the US market. Also when you look at the "tariffs" or other forms of protectionism that Canada does vs US they are basically all for 1 of 2 reasons:

1) Canada is integrated with the American market but dwarfed by it. US players have the ability to manipulate and cripple some of our sectors so there are boundaries in place. This is one way defense and are reasonably negotiated.

2) We have different health and regulation standards on certain agriculture products. Imported goods have to comply with these standards. Same way we don't want China exploiting bad labor and environmental practices to flood markets.

It's also like take something like supply management. I've definitely heard cases for it to be reformed, like some people are for keeping it the same, some for abolishing completely, but also some strong cases for reform. But here's the thing, this is a detail that is negotiated at something like USMCA that trump signed. Maybe Canadians should care less about dairy and more about something else and get some different trade-offs in USMCA, that's a Canadian political question. Like maybe the way they treat our lumber should take more or less priority. But all of this is reasonable in the context of a negotiated free traded agreement between the countries, and not to be used as a political cludgel to justify economy-wide tarrifs.

Also I'm glad canadian dairy doesn't have the growth hormones issues of US dairy.

Yeah I wouldn’t buy US milk if it was 1/2 the price
