I'm guessing hushed talks have been held with other nations, so this response is likely not done in a vacuum. While the US is hellbent on spending on all its soft power for nothing, what remains is still a powerful and rich nation, which few can stand up to on their own.
There is also the signal effect. A failure to tariff back would be hailed as a win by the US government, regardless of whether this is true or not. This could greatly prolong the trade war.

-On Monday Lutnick said that the tariffs won't be announced until Wednesday, and they might be less than the 25%
-Shortly After Trump announced the Tariffs at 25%
-Lutnick says this is just the beginning of tariffs???
-Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs
-Trump says that governor Trudeau doesn't understand that the US will increase tariffs by the same amount as any retaliation
-Stock market not happy
-Lutnick says the tariffs may end Wednesday and there may be some compromise.
Lutnick doesn't seem to have a track record as being on the same page as Trump, so whatever he is saying is probably worthless.
The big problem is that Lutnick's statement today calmed the futures markets, so if some deal is not reached or announced then the markets will be jittery again.

Nobody thought the trivial 1% of fentanyl problem was a significant problem until your Dear Leader used it as an empty pretext for economic warfare (allowing him to avoid congress by citing it as a national emergency). You never mentioned it, for instance. After the tiny amount was decimated to an even tinier amount, the tariffs still got put in place making the lie that this had anything to do with fentanyl ever clearer.

Lmao wtf is this BS. Last month we were at 1% of the total. We cut that by 97%. Tariffs still came. Because it was never about the ****ing fentanyl - this was always a pretext - and that you dug up a nine year old report about drugs coming INTO Canada (ya know, Canadas primary responsibility, doesn’t suddenly make it even remotely reasonable to attack Canada like Trump has done.
