Climate Change - increasingly horrible disasters loom
...............
there is so much out there about this - I don't really need to provide a lot of sources - a quick google
I usually ski 70-100+ days per year. I believe I will hang up my skis at 32 this season.
But... is it Really an up side?
Did Eldora on Friday, morning was good but afternoon was like skiing through sand. Did see my first set of shirtless guys and bikini topped women.
Hoping to get to Copper next week and supposedly Vail the following but that may be lol.
I skied Whistler a few years ago when it was 80 degrees at the base. Some great scenery that day.
The ice shelf in front of Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is likely disintegrating in the coming months.
What does this mean ?
Ice shelves are floating on the ocean. Their collapse does not in and of itself raise sea levels. The relevance is that the shelves provide buttressing or resistance to the outward flow of the land based glacier behind it. So the Thwaites Glacier, which already contributes ~ 4% of sea level rise, will move more quickly into the ocean.
The Thwaites Glacier itself holds enough water to raise sea levels by about 65 cm or 2 feet. Thwaites is part of a system of glaciers which hold back the West Antarctic Ice Sheet which holds enough water to raise sea levels by about 3m or 10 feet.
These rises would take place over the course of decades and centuries so there is no risk of immediate coastal inundation. But every inch of sea level rise matters, especially since these rises are not equally distributed. They amplify the impact of coastal storms and associated storm surge. Anyone who must purchase homeowners insurance in a gulf coast region has to deal with rates increases that are far exceeding general inflation.
I lived up at Tahoe for years. The whole ambiance really changed and not for the better. Like the Eagles said, "You call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye."
I've skied Tahoe since '93. '22 and '16 were the 2nd and 5th largest winters on historical record. And these were low elevation snow events.
Sunshine Village in Alberta will remain until July 5th . Base of 869 cm 28 ft base
May temperature records being set around the world at the moment
UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Florida Keys
The previous UK high in May was 32.8C (89F). Earlier today hit 35.1C. (93F).
Florida Keys has recorded an overnight low of 29C / 84F 4 times this month.
Regions in India are forecast to experience conditions approaching wet bulb thresholds.

Each year in the last 30+ years it has mostly been in the top 20 all time. Top 10 a lot too and sometimes highest. It will keep getting worse until most of the countries on the planet go clean energy. My guess is that it will be unlikely in the near future. I think some bad things will have to happen before we all get together on this.
The odd thing is that in 1998 (if I remember correctly) it set a record and the following few years it was much lower temp and Republicans started arguing that there was no global warming because temperature averages (which were ten year averages) were dropping. That was when it changed from global warming to Climate change...

Can we do without the slight dishonest and sensationalism pics?
Slightly dishonest is being kind
Lake Poopó—once Bolivia's second-largest lake and an important
fishing resource for local communities—has essentially dried up.
News reports blame recurrent drought and the diversion of the lake's water sources for mining and agriculture.
It will keep getting worse even after we shift to clean energy. There is a lag time between the reaching of a new atmospheric GHG level and the Earth reaching equilibrium to that level. Roughly half a century.
We need to figure out how to reduce GHG levels if we want to stabilize the climate.
I mean, it is not dishonest, it is reality. As the world gets hotter, climate change will create more and more disasters like this.
If the point is that this case is a compound problem with other contributing factors, both from human action and environmental issues that is certainly true. However, you don't get to ignore the consequences of reckless driving just because there was a bend in the road and it was wet that day.
A lot of human settlement rely on fragile ecosystems that will be affected by global warming at a faster rate than less exposed locations. Pointing out the dangers this exposes us to is not being dishonest, it is being realistic.
People are also often blissfully unaware that they live is such places, and assume that such dangers are merely for people in foreign lands.

My point is this particular lake has a history of completely drying up.
The problem, or disaster if you will, as of now is primarily that the lake is very unlikely to rebound, even with human intervention. Which is not solely down to climate change, but also down to human practices and geography.
However, that is how climate change will tend to affect us negatively around the world, by being one of many factors and the proverbial thumb on the scale. We still need to take it seriously.

You are missing the point so much it's quite rare from you.
I'm talking exclusively about the steamraise post and your response here.
No one argued there is no problem and we must not take it seriously, that was a given ( but I guess not so much if you had to word your answer that way).
My point is you absolutely need complete transparency when talking about climate change, and avoid at all cost sensationalism and approximatives claims, considering the idiots and forces you are trying to convince.
They will absolutely use every single angle you serve them in bad faith.
Bad faith or idiocy / greed / whatever you want to call it is what you are against.
That steamraise post is the equivalent of that idiot with the snowball in senate,
edit: I suspect natediggity is an immediate result of this bad approach (I might be wrong, haven't read much of his opinions on this)
I don't have strong opinions. But "facebook" as a source of anything will get my radar going.
I do my part for the climate. Walk wherever I can. I've done my share of travelling and cannot believe the amount of trucks and SUVs in USA. I don't enjoy having to drag 4000 lbs of metal with me to go buy milk.
Part of me wants to move somewhere where I can ride a horse everywhere instead of driving.
