I guess it could go either way. Marcellus doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would hand that job off to a couple of crackheads. And he does seem like the kind of guy who would have access to more reliable people for that sort of work.

I had always assumed the implication was that a couple of crackheads would have no compunction about being gratuitously sadistic and would have Zed suffer as much as possible for their own entertainment.

I don't see what else "pipe hitting" could mean to be honest. "Hitting the pipe" predates Pulp Fiction as a term for smoking crack, I'm sure, and if "pipe" refers to a weapon, I could see it being "pipe swinging" but not "pipe hitting". I mean, you wouldn't really say "hammer hitting" or "axe hitting" when describing a deranged maniac, would you?
