Now as for the riots, maybe you guys simply don't calculate damage the same way normal rational people do.

BLM riots caused 1-2 blns in insured damage and that's just the direct damage to property. The decrease in economic activity isn't accounted for, the quality of life loss of local residents for those days isn't accounted for.

It's not irrealistic to estimate the total damage at much more than 5 billions accounting for reduced economic activity and quality of life loss. That's equivalent to assassinating more than a thousands people in cold blood by any reasonable estimate of the value of a median life.

I am not an utilitarian when it's about policy (i would not agree with causing harm to innocents to prevent harm to innocents even if the prevented harm is greater), but when comparing 2 sources of violence, well you should account numerically.

And rioting is exactly identical to killing people , it's not that killing is magically worse or non-comparable to destroying property or causing involuntary reductions in economic activity.

If by blocking a bridge you (say, completly random example), cause 60k people to lose 20 minutes, you stole 20k hours of human life. That's the same as kidnapping someone and holding him prisoner for more than 2 years.

Then there is the decrease in economic activity and the rest.

BLM riots alone caused more damage than the totality of rightwing caused damage since ww2 in the USA. And yes that includes the Oklahoma bombing. It's not even close. Single episodes can very hardly be as damaging as widespread rioting is, that's the point. And basically only the left causes widespread rioting since ww2 , at least in the USA.

What's completely deranged is to refuse to accept the fact that our societies already attach a monetary value to human lives all the times and although that number varies a lot depending on the context, it's rarely above a few million dollars each.

The delusion that human life has "infinite value" is debunked every time any society spends money for something that isn't healthcare or that doesn't increase life spans, and everytime we accept tradeoffs between lives and everything else.

If what here you claim to be obvious was actually what people think, speed limits would be far lower for example, and motorbikes would be illegal everywhere.
