Crossnerd's a mod? Wow.

She'll be great. Just never thought she would want it.

Aww thanks, friend Look at us now!

by d2_e4 m

Crossnerd, since you are now our new overlord,

Mistake #1... there is no overlord, only a group of lords (quite a step down for a king)

#2 maybe you should have ####'d them better.

I'm at the airport i'm Asheville, North Carolina and they are doing gate announcements for a flight to Newark, New Jersey and the guy is pronouncing it like "Nork"-- as one syllable.

This is correct.

It's more "Nwerk". The one in Delaware is New Ark.

More and more long-time posters disappearing and mods demodding themselves. Can't be a good sign for the health of this forum.

Are there really? I haven't kept really close track, so you could be right, but my observation has been that there is always a trickle/stream of people leaving, stepping back from moderating, etc. But at some point, the accumulation (which is natural as time passes) becomes more noticeable to us.

Or there's been an increase and I haven't really noticed.

Well, I think this issue is as much about replacement as anything. If forums were still thriving, there would be constant replenishment and people leaving wouldn't be a big deal. But I'd say forums have been surpassed by social media platforms like Twitter and Discord, and for us old people, Facebook. But whatever the reason, if nothing changes in terms of people's preference of interaction platforms online, I expect most forums will continue to decline, some faster than others. The decline here has to be at least a decade old now, so I expect it has quite a while to go yet.

sorry to hear that, i know we had our differences over the years but always felt like you did a great job and always kept your cool relatively well despite how difficult that can be in that job at times

Thanks!

I worked in Newark Delaware for several years. When answering the phone i would pronounce Newark as they would call the jersey city and clients would go on tilt

The original Newark in England is 'Newrk', a bit like the New Jersey one.

As Americans have this thing about 'pronouncing words as spelt' (or 'spelled'), it's not terribly surprising to find a New Ark lurking somewhere over there. Cairo, Illinois is apparently pronounced 'Kay-ro' and if you go there and get it wrong and say, 'The capital of Egypt's pronounced Kye-ro,' they just say, 'Well, this here's Kay-ro.'

Don't forget Mos-coww and Glas-goww 😀

Do not bring the Israel/Palestine thread into this one.

by Crossnerd m

Do not bring the Israel/Palestine thread into this one.

I am bringing a discussion about moderation to the thread labeled as such, I did not mention anything about the topic of Israel/Palestine.

Can we get a discussion about why people who ruin that and other threads can't be banned?

Not at this time, no.

Well, I for one think it is a ridiculous policy to shut down forums because a few people consistently cause problems.

Yeah, closing a thread of an important war over a couple posters is silly. Either hand out multiple bans or extended bans, or not, but leaving it open is better.

A lot of us just arent conditioned yet to talk about this stuff but we are going to have to face it anyway because these wars arent going away.

I stopped participating in the Russia Ukraine thread a few months ago because it had the same posters causing the same problems. Had given up on the IP thread as well, but decided to check it out again under the news moderation.

A few? We've had four bans from that thread alone in a matter of days, an absurd amount of timeouts, an absolute onslaught of PMs, and the post reports, and one poster going on a ridiculous personal rant against me for moderating the thread. The thread is only open now at all because I agreed to moderate it, and I've been as nice as I can be and put as much effort into it as I'm willing to. So the thread is locked for now until some of you can learn to behave, and to give me a minute to collect myself.

I'm willing to assist in moderating it if that helps keep it open.

Thank you, I appreciate your offer, but what would help me is if everyone would even meagerly attempt to follow the very basic rules of not only that thread, but this forum. We will try again tomorrow.

I'm still mad about the Cats movie, FYI.

Truly horrible doc

This aspect of it kinda fascinates me tbh. I’m 38 and this is probably the most polarizing topic (as an American) in my lifetime and what I imagine is the closest this generation will get to what I imagine Vietnam was

From a purely observational standpoint it’s interesting to see how balls to the wall everyone is getting about it when there is no baseline and the positions are super duper extreme

Edit: this post by me added literally nothing to the topic at hand, just wanted to chuck it in there
