People are saying that magats are torching Teslas. Are they saying it's because they are extreme racists mad at Elon because he is a foreigner who supports H1B or because the torchings are false flags?

The joke is that some of the least informed or intelligent people here could somehow know the specifics of what Tesla is doing with their 9 figures of inventory out there. Akin to the logic of just saying Apple obviously won’t just go to Aetna for health insurance for their employees they're rich so they just do it themselves to save on premiums!

Doesn't "self-insure" just mean "not insure" though. Like when you pass on Obamacare, they call it "self-insuring" if you have whatever millions of dollars just because it's in the context of a discussion about insurance. If you're just going to lose out when your cars get torched, and there's not even some law mandating this insurance where you check the "self-insure" box...you're just not insuring. Just because you happen to have enough money to absorb the loss doesn't make that self-insuring.

Mostly correct. You can have insurance for something and also elect not to engage it in the event of a loss, to avoid it affecting your future premiums. Anyone who thinks this doesn't happen is a fool.

When you do business with an insurance company, your premiums are factored in part based on how much of the risk you're willing to take off their hands. Think of it like your deductible on your personal auto policy. If you have a $500 deductible, your premiums are going to be a lot higher than if you had a $7500 deductible. If you can easily afford the $7500 repair on what should be a rare occurrence, you should probably sign up for the much cheaper policy. You'll come out way ahead in the long run.

You can think of it like you're "self-insuring" anything under a $7500 loss. If you had the $500 deductible policy and get yourself into a $700 accident, based on your history you might also be making the correct play by just paying out of pocket to avoid the incident appearing on your internal loss report. If you get a reputation as a frequent filer, your rates are going up. If you're a very infrequent filer, you may be able to negotiate refunds/dividends on premiums, further lowering your overall insurance costs.

You own rental property, so surely you've had these discussions with your own insurance broker. If not, they're probably ripping you off.
