British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

The rest of my post addressed that. Young people are under huge amounts of pressure and face miserable and uncertain futures, and see their parents often working two jobs just to pay the bills.

But if you're trolling with some kind of German supremacy line, wp.

Edi: Nice edit.

Hope people are laughing all the way to the polling station at this clueless entitled prick's difficulties:

Sunak's struggles 1

Sunak's struggles 2

There is an interesting phrase that Sunak keeps using, which is that Keir Starmer “thinks he can just waltz into Downing Street”. It is as if the Labour leader were somehow illegitimate in contesting the election, a bit of a chancer. You want to sit Sunak down and explain how this democracy lark works; if enough people vote for you, then, yes, you are indeed the rightful holder of the office, and therefore entitled to waltz – or, if you prefer, walk normally – into its residence. Sunak should know that, except he did waltz into Downing Street without the preliminaries. Now he looks, talks and acts like a man trying to waltz back out.

not trolling just wondering what was going on in london since it keeps popping up in the news.
your post might explain why it happens, thanks

Ok. It's not only London. Youth stabbings have been happening all over the country for years.

The UK is pretty much over as a credible country now, and these are the symptoms, as was Brexit. Starmer will do absolutely nothing to change anything about that, and probably doesn't even recognise the problems let alone show any ability or desire to think of solutions.

I've depressed chezlaw enough now, so I'll go to bed.

ok thanks.

Pretty sure it's largely done to very destructive policies on drugs.

We faught the war and the war won.

Meh. That’s a factor but other European countries have strict anti drugs laws but not the widespread knife crime, whereas the two countries that took the Monetarism route and abandoned social cohesion in favour of the cult of the individual have rampant drug related gang crime.

When teenagers are faced with a future of delivering wealthier people’s food for them or cleaning jobs some will be attracted by the lure of working for themselves by dealing drugs with the dream of becoming rich one day. Young people need to have a dream, even if it’s a lame one centered around Lambos.

Where is the cost benefit analysis on this?

This was my first question. I'm pretty ambivalent on it, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand as a bad idea if the social and economic arguments stacked up.

Obviously if Sunak has just pulled this out of his arse it's a bad idea (extremely likely), but in the (extremely unlikely) event this has been well thought through, I'd be interested in the details. Way too many 18yos waste their time going to university, and I'd like to see better/alterative options for young people.

Obviously not well thought through because of the reaction of ex armed forces chiefs to it, among others.

A little good news. One down, only 170 to go…

First non dom billionire ****s off

Where’s his house so that the homeless can squat it?

yes please send them all here

Great. We need to advertise it so more can take advantage of it. Good riddance to parasites.

Italys stupidity, the legacy of berlusconis kleptocracy, will be the UKs gain. I don’t know why they’d want to stay here anyway. Can’t really compare the Isle of Wight to Capri.

lol parasites, they still generate more fiscal revenue with their presence (direct and indirect) than they cost the state.

just excise taxes on the fuel for their yatch is more than what a normal person pays in net taxes in a lifetime

I think the average Briton probably thinks the country can do a little better than as a petrol station for billionaires' yachts.

I'd still much prefer to tax their wealth via their property/land, but if they want to go I'm fine with it.

Afaik land is taxed regardless of fiscal residency, it's not like they are property tax exempt (are they?).

Now if you want to tax them because they own a company in India or Canada or wherever else... That's just bizzarre, others won't and they will move (which is what is happening).

They'd pay council tax on their property, but it's loose change to them and the way the value bands work now it's become a regressive tax.

I'd prefer to scrap income tax completely and generate most private tax from well-formed property/land taxes.

No. The UK's homicide rate is low and well within European norms. In the last year it was significantly down on the previous year, though of course the overall rate is so low that small changes appear large.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationa...

England and Wales had a relatively low rate of homicide (9.9 per million population) in the year ending March 2023, compared with the global average, and is similar to most EU countries.

As regards teenage knife crime, it's the aggressive idiots who carry knives who are more likely to get stabbed, though this is not always the case.

Not all knife crime ends in death. Can't believe you seem to be saying that knife crime isn't a problem here. Are you feeling ok?

Knives are like guns in making the carrier more likely to be their victim.

by BOIDS k

great quote from cabinet minister steve baker today

'The Prime Minister told everyone we could go on holiday and then called a snap election. So I've chosen to do my campaign work in Greece.'

The Tories, knowing they won't win, have gone into end-of-term, Alice-Cooper, school's-out mode and are just playing Ludo on their desks and chucking ink darts and waiting for the bell.

If the situation was that bad it would show up in the homicide rate, and it doesn't. Remember you said society was disintegrating.

The UK is pretty much over as a credible country now, and these are the symptoms...

This is not the case.

Let's make owning a metal knife illegal that would surely fix everything

offences involving knives or sharp instruments (excluding Greater Manchester Police and Devon and Cornwall Police) increased by 7% (to 49,489 offences) compared with the year ending December 2022 (46,153 offences), but remain 3% lower compared with the year ending March 2020 (51,206 offences)

So 50,000 knife crime offences p.a. (the reported ones anyway) is nothing to be concerned about. I guess if you live in leafy NW London you're able to close your eyes, hum a tune from WW2 and pretend it isn't really happening.

We already have age restrictions on sale of knives.

Don't be silly. And I've seen and tended someone stabbed and bleeding to death on the pavement and I suspect you haven't.
