and i'd go with crown after london. hard to differentiate between crown/ruler, but with pan wrong, crown probably fits what he was going for with grab better than ruler does

They’re both prehistoric and extinct like dinosaurs. And Germany rings a bell for some reason, famous Neanderthal settlement sites there or something. Not sure about the third.
Neil has clued nine words, but we got a freebie with pan. If pan wasn’t a black word, then one of the Neanderthal words has to also hit black. It’s also n-1, so if we think that matters (despite no list), the only other word we mentioned was helicopter.

Yeah, Germany stuck out to me too, even though I can't really explain why. And I agree with everything else in your post.
Maybe ruler for the 3rd neanderthal word? No idea really.
