A couple additional thoughts:

Laser, because there are laser guided missiles (though not, to the best of my knowledge, laser guided torpedos). One additional step there, so not great
Bed, as in ocean bed
Spy, because they used to travel by sub sometimes, at least in old Tom Clancy novels
Lead, as in bullets

Still don't feel good about any of these, but do feel very good about my top 3

Missile is the only real lock, but I agree that fish and whale are probably the next two. #4 is really tough. I don’t like laser because of what you said. I don’t like bed because the clue is torpedo and not submarine. Spy seems most reasonable to me and I’m not in love with it at all.

I guess if we needed a backup I’d go with lead, but that’s super thin. And there’s really nothing else on the list that even peripherally hits the clue for me.

Bell - "tolling of the bell", i think this is also obvious
Dress - funeral known for having a style of dress, all black, etc
Bed - laid to rest, coffin as a kind of bed

Police - police escort for a funeral procession
Park - this one is kind of weak, but a funeral can take place in a cemetery which kinda resembles a park
