With kiwi being out, what I’m left thinking is that other animal and fruit words are safe.

Well, the clue isn’t New Zealand. It’s Zealander, which is a person who lives in New Zealand (also known as a kiwi). Because he’s saying no to kiwi, then I think it’s a fair bet that other words on the board that would commonly be clued with kiwi should be safe, i.e., fruits (a kiwi is a type of fruit) and animals (a kiwi is a type of bird).
If we’re not guessing fruits and animals here first and foremost, we’re doing it wrong.

yeah, if he wanted to avoid kiwi, green woulda worked also, but green gets you off of apple and orange so I figured that was why he did it this way; to get the non-kiwi fruits
0 clue to start can be strong when you have multiple words in a category with the assassin; you clue away from the assassin in a different way and then your team can guess the others in the other category that the assassin belongs to that you didn't clue against

A lock is where they raise or lower the water when two bodies of water that are different heights meet
So you drive your boat into the lock and then wait while water fills up or drains to the level of the next water and then you drive out into the other water
