when we buy their goods, we transfer our dollars for their labor - essentially buying their lived lives
this was seen as a "deficit" by people who fantasize about swimming in towers filled with gold coins
now instead we are facing ruined retirements, empty storeshelves, and an increased lag in technological development

I do agree that if the Federal Government doesn't start controlling spending and the deficit, there WILL be economic hell to pay.
What is the magic mechanism by which tariffs on the entire world don't decimate the US economy?

Yes. Plenty of closed manufacturing plants that moved to Canada and Mexico. Just look at Michigan.
