There have been 267 popes, as listed by the Annuario Pontificio (Pontifical Yearbook) under the heading 'I Sommi Pontefi

That's one hell of a punishment

Incorrects:
Anthony (Saint, but never pope)
Augustine (Saint, but never pope)
Bartholomew (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Cyril (Coptic pope)
Matthew (Coptic pope)
Otto (holy Roman emperor)
Timothy (Coptic pope)
Vilnus (sounds made up)
The good intentions of k-man paved his road to perdition.
eb gets it wrong, but has a chance to redeem himself this round with two correct answers.
No more indulgences will be granted after this round, so xander and DZ need to remain perfect from here on out.
START ROUND SIX
Thanks for running, IBD! Like old Thunderdome times. Might even try running one myself soon if the spirit hits me right.
Time to shoot from the hip
constantine
James
Simon
Lucius
Incorrects:
Anthony (Saint, but never pope)
Augustine (Saint, but never pope)
Bartholomew (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Cyril (Coptic pope)
James (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Matthew (Coptic pope)
Otto (holy Roman emperor)
Simon (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Timothy (Coptic pope)
Vilnus (sounds made up)
James and Simon were respectable answers, but also wrong. Hope eb enjoys the smell of sulfur!
DZ and xander showing some real papal knowledge here. Look who paid attention in catechesis!
Now that weβre out of indulgences, the rounds will run more quickly and will be revealed as soon as each participant has submitted an answer.
I just realized I shouldβve been using Roman numerals for the rounds! Thatβll be ten Our Fathers and five Hail Marys for me.
START ROUND VII
Pretty ****ed here
septimus
Augustus
There have been several popes called Septimus. Unfortunately, it wasnβt their papal name, it was that they were the 7th with that name.
Augustus was made Pontifus Maximus in 13 BCE, making him βChief Priestβ of Rome. However, he was never pope of the Catholic Church (which wasnβt a thing yet) and this is incorrect.
We’re not gonna end on a tie here if I can help it. We have 27 out of 81 guessed so far. Go ahead and each of you submit three names and we’ll play sudden death. 14 of the unguessed names have had multiple popes with that name. We’re definitely getting into some obscurity - the most recent unguessed pope ruled in 1555.
START SUBITA MORTE
Ovtavius
Ivan
Lucas
Literal guess work so....
maximus
Martin
Julius
Julius has already been picked.
George

WE HAVE A NEW POPE! DZ takes it home with Martin! There have been three popes named Martin, the last being Martin V (seriously) in 1431. DZ will surely join Christ at the right hand of God on judgment day.
Incorrects:
Anthony (Saint, but never pope)
Augustine (Saint, but never pope)
Bartholomew (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Cyril (Coptic pope)
George (The Quiet Beatle)
Ivan (Terrible, but never pope)
James (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Lucas (Traditional author of Luke and Acts, never pope)
Matthew (Coptic pope)
Maximus (Coptic pope, champion gladiator under moniker βThe Spaniardβ)
Octavius (Given name of Pope John XII, but not a papal name)
Otto (holy Roman emperor)
Simon (Member of The Twelve, saint, but never pope)
Timothy (Coptic pope)
Vilnus (sounds made up)
Unfortunately, xander was not selected in conclave and will have to suffer everlasting separation from the Lord Almighty.
Thanks to all for playing!
