NCAA FOOTBALL 2024 MEGA THREAD - WELCOME TO THE PLAYOFF ERA

NCAA FOOTBALL 2024 MEGA THREAD - WELCOME TO THE PLAYOFF ERA

Just 8 days until Florida State plays Georgia Tech!

A lot happened while you were away:

Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC

The Pac-12 went out in a blaze of glory:
Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA are headed to the B1G
Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado are headed to the B12
Cal and Stanford along with SMU are somehow headed to the ACC
Poor old Wazzu and Oregon State are now aligned with the MWC in some sort of in-flux relationship

The conferences are huge now, and the schedules are wildly imbalanced. Florida might have the hardest schedule in the history of the sport, while Missouri's playing a sun-belt slate.

FSU and Clemson play each other, but then play ZERO common ACC opponents

Utah/Baylor and Arizona/Kansas State play non-conference games against conference opponents

LSU and USC play in Vegas!

Boise goes to Oregon, a team they've never lost to!

Texas at Michigan!

Alabama at Wisconsin!

Notre Dame at ATM!

Clemson vs Georgia!

And there are some incredibly juicy new conference matchups:

Texas @ ATM is back!

Texas vs Georgia

Oregon vs Ohio State

USC @ Michigan

USC vs Penn State

And then the bizarre:

UCLA @ Rutgers is now a conference game

Syracuse plays home and away against Cal and Stanford for some reason

Half the teams have new coaches, transferred quarterbacks, or both!

Let's get it on!

Got to be pretty tough champ game for Michigan fans though?

I couldn't imagine having to endure Oklahoma playing Texas A&M in the championship game

I'm not trying to troll you but I wanted Texas to win so badly that nothing can top the pain I felt when Texas pitched the ball 8 yards backwards--or whatever it was--when they were on the 1 yard line. At this point the pains over because in my mind Ohio State won the national championship on that horrific play call.

Now I'm in the acceptance stage, numb to what the bitter mistress of harsh reality is about to impose on me. I'll be ecstatic if ND wins but it's not happening. Unfortunately Ohio State is who we all thought they were. The best damn team in college football.

Eh, not really. Winning it all last year makes this a LOT easier to take, and doubly so since Michigan beat Ohio State again. The rivalry with ND is fading rapidly and ND fans aren't OSU or MSU fans. They're going to be more like SMU or Nebraska or something in your scenario than Oklahoma or ATM.

OSU and MSU fans are subhuman troglodyte pond scum. ND fans are basically us.

I'm gonna laugh like heck when Belichick calls a presser about one of these NFL job openings. "Due to various uncertainties ..."

Yeah, that pitch was a WTF moment that no Texas fan understands or is happy about. Pound it up the middle of QB sneak 4 times and one will get in. Run the same formation as the hike between the legs to Manning but do the sneak, ****ing something, anything but trying to run wide with 11 people in the box. Hell, Ewers doesn't pitch and bootlegs and he's got 1 guy to beat and 30 yards of end zone available.

Never thought about the ND rivalry dying off. When I went to UT in the late 80's Arkansas, OU and A&M were the rivals. When I went to the game at Arkansas in 2004 I got told to **** off and die by everyone aged 3-90 on the walk to the stadium. Friends that went this year said everyone was friendly and hoped they had a fun trip. Guess not playing for a while does that.

I'm already sad enough today. Don't trigger me into missing the legendary Carl Sagan.

Yea it pisses me off man. I want Michigan playing ND every year. I don't even care if it hurts our playoff equity which it invariably would. It's the way things should be. Those two fight songs, uniforms, traditions, should be on the same field every single year. I'm also pissed that the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry died. At least Texas is playing A&M again. Very happy about that. Even Penn State not playing Pitt every year rankles me.

Except now with the 12 team playoff, a single loss doesn't end your season the way it used to ldo, so the hit isn't nearly as painful.

Some day maybe the committee will even value scheduling quality opponents instead of beating up on Ball State or the Coast Guard Academy or Mercer.

I definitely need to rewatch that one. I just remember hating Grbac and Moeller after the game.

Edit: Another example of how vicious college football was back that. That tie ended up effectively eliminating both teams from a national title.

corporate donors want to be warm and comfy

it's like if Wimbledon decided to play the last 3 rounds on clay or the nba lowered the rim for the playoffs just dumb

one bowl game or championship game at the end of the season warm weather OK but three games in domes and none of these teams playing even won conference championships. Makes the regular season pointless

by ArcticKnight k

I have no problem how it turned out. The seedings were flawed, but each team in the CG had to to play an extra game, and faced at least 2 quality opponents. They did not get to the final on resume. Better for the national audience than OSU playing Penn State.
And, no SEC team is a bonus!!

I don't mind 12, as long as they ditch the byes for conference champs, and maybe just assure them a top 12 spot instead.

Also, do people think any conferences with ditch their Conference Championship Game

They’re built into their tv contracts so 2030 might be the first chance for a P4 to change unless someone’s willing to take less money ( har har, hardy har har).

Seems Irish need Big D somehow stop the huge play and turnover margin. To me it feels a bit like Penn State/Miami title game, where Nittany pulled it off way outgunned.

One of the ESPN blurbs Penn State has the first chance to play for the national title in program history I was like 😡

We agree on something. Maybe we agree on the absurdity of Ohio State, who lost their biggest game, lost to their rival, did not win their conference; gets to win the national title for having the best season.

If they get to hang a banner I hope it says "YOUR 4TH PLACE IN THE B1G NATIONAL CHAMPION BUCKEYES"

Meh If I'm an Ohio State fan I cackle with pure Joy at the notion of any Michigan fan or anyone else trying to denigrate this championship. I would look at the loss to Michigan this year--in fact the losses to Michigan the last 4 years--as part of the necessary journey that led to the promised land.

I mean Ohio State has only won 2 national championships in the last 57 years. National championships are ****ing hard man (if you don't have the Darth Vader of cheating). Wouldn't give a **** at all that my team finished 4th in the Big Ten or lost to Michigan. Just like I don't give a **** that Michigan basketball finished 3rd in the Big Ten when they won it all in 89.

If they win, I'll give them due credit for that. But at the same time you bet they're getting a full ration of **** talking along with it. It's part of what makes the rivalry what it is. And there isn't a damn thing they can do about the facts.

No doubt. But if I'm an Ohio State fan my sincere response to the trash talk would be, "Oh I know you guys own us but I no longer care cuz trophy go brrr!!!"

I don't think any Bama fan gives a **** they didn't get the SEC championship a few years ago when they ended up winning the national championship.

I know I wouldn't give one thought to the SEC championship as a Texas fan if we won yesterday and beat ND.

Yep. Same with Georgia 2021. It all just becomes part of their harrowing odyssey to nirvana. It's like that quote from Swamp Thing, "The only way out is through." Ohio State fans will reconcile the past 4 years as the necessary suffering and misery they had to go through to reach greatness. And the endlessly annoying part for me is they won't be wrong.

Hell, last year Texas lost to OU but made the playoff.

Would I trade a win over OU for two other losses that kept us out of the playoff? **** no.

Yep. The new 12 team format basically destroys rivalries. Part of me is sad about that but I'm ok with it. Im right there with you. All that matters now to me is making the playoffs. This is my new standard for success:

1) Make the playoffs = good season.
2) Make the final 4 = great season
3) Win it all = Legendary season.

Beating rivals and winning conference championships will still matter in the short run cuz of cultural inertia but all I really care about is making the playoffs. Everything else is secondary.

My Lord Lane is incredible.

If they beat Notre Dame on Monday, they'll have played 8 games against the Sagarin top 11 going 6-2.
