NCAA Basketball Thread 2024-2025

Quick OP here just to get us up and running

Things to watch for this year:

1. Can UConn 3-peat? Hurley won back to back championships with Clingan, Tristen Newton, and company. Can he make it a third with only one returning starter?

2. Who will be this years national player of the year? Zach Edey was the best player I've seen play college basketball in my lifetime. People throw the term generational talent around alot and Edey was truly a generational talent winning back to back national player of the year awards. But, now he's gone. So who can win the award?

- the 5th year guards in Mark Sears(Alabama) and RJ Davis(UNC) are a good spot to start. Both elite shooters and engines of an offense, they should lead two really good teams.

- the 5th year centers in Hunter Dickinson(Kansas) and Ryan Kallbrenner(Creighton) are also viable options. They'll be the anchors to what should be two really good teams.

- The phenoms: Cooper Flagg(Duke), Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper(Rutgers), VJ Edgecombe(Baylor), and Tre Johnson(Texas) lead a loaded freshman class.

3. Who are the contenders?

And half the fouls are wild guesses by the officials.

Can St. Johns abuse them in the 2nd half as they tend to do? I don't think so.

I think so. SJU aren't going to brick a layup per minute the whole game - feels like they're just better.

Feels like Tennessee should be favourites to come out of the Midwest tbh.

You aren't familiar with Rick Barnes nor did you watch that wofford mess.

I like it. It's akin to being on a yellow card in soccer, adds an extra element of strategy for both teams.

Yeah let's take the stars out of the game based on wild guesses because it increases strategy.

New York mafia clearly in charge of the refs and the game.

Feels like heavyweight stuff. Super strong resilient teams.

Like Tom Brady, you are out of the game for the half based on two early infractions, and we are putting Cassel in. There would be riots all over the country and it would be changed immediately. But the NCAA just can't figure things out like that. Maybe they can do an investigation of it for 12 years or so.

ppl itt asked if St. John's could title, i said not w that offense

25.0 eFG%

Chuck, totally serious, just said he wants to congratulate the officials for letting them play lol. They called the softest F1 I've ever seen but only a technical for a much worse use of excessive force. They're just clicking buttons.

Don't agree that it's wild guesses and I also think that it adds to the excitement.

Spoiler alert - the NBA also has players fouling out. Double spoiler alert - football and basketball are different sports.

You blinked. You surrendered. The debate has been going on for decades and you think you just came up with an angle about the NBA and different sports, thinking that was some kind of gotcha point. What it is is you wading in with kindergarten stuff having never thought about it.

It adds to the excitement to have starting players removed from the game for no good reason? Otay.

It isn't no reason though is it. It's because they're at risk of fouling out of the game.

And yeah if they leave in a big on 3 fouls early teams should be driving at them every time etc

I have thought about it and I like it (and said so), you're allowed to disagree that is valid!

I'm happy for you that you don't think foul trouble should be a concept in existence in 2025. I think removing it takes away some elements of the game I enjoy (including added tension when stars are in foul trouble).

One way around the foul trouble thing might be to allow the first couple players approaching 5 an exemption, and beyond that fouls are restricted. This would keep rough play from running amok -- seeming the only rationale for the foul out thing -- while keeping stars in the game.

There is no reasonable denying that there is a heavy element of randomness to what gets called and what doesn't. And they sit because of it, changing winners.

And so added tension for your viewing enjoyment is the reason you are giving??

There is some level of randomness in all sport and I also don't believe that removing it makes the sport more enjoyable as an overall experience. It isn't chess nor should it be.

There's a large amount of enjoyment that people get out of arguing about decisions/calls etc, people thought that introducing video replay would change that but it did not do so.

Incredible fortitude by a 9th place team. Ever been a 9th place team in the Sweet 16? The Elite 8? I do suspect Arkansas will lose in the next round if they finish this off, but I'll have to look at the match up then.

The reason I'm giving is that I enjoy NCAAB as it is including the foul trouble element of it, and I don't believe that removing it would yield a better "product" (which is all Americans care about lol) for me personally.

You're allowed to disagree doesn't make my day any better or worse

So there we are with you stuck on your enjoyment of the experience. The factor that is taking players out of the game is enhancing viewer experience. So why not with Brady going out of the game for some ticky tack stuff? There just is no defense other than trying to keep the game from getting too rough, and that can be circumvented.

So I guess Pitino will mount a savage rally and Calipari answers that too??

why are ppl engaging w Gaga on his juvenile non-starter topic?

Yeah I'm talking about the sport and he's talking about the viewer experience.
