Bob Gibson doing that Ohtani thing:

In the 1967 World Series, Gibson wins Game 1 on a 6-hitter 2-1, he pitches a 5-hit shutout in Game 4, in Game 7 he hits a titanic homer and hurls a 3-hitter. For the series, 3-0 record, 3 CGs, 26 Ks, 14 hits allowed, 1.0 ERA.

Anyway, how many pitchers have homered in Game 7 of a World Series?

Gibson actually homered in back to back WS.

Of course he also made 6 starts in those 2 WS throwing 6 complete games. He gave up 8 runs total.

And now a sports gambling scandal hits MLB just like the NBA.

This is only going to get worse.

All the pro sports leagues need to cut all ties to sports betting sites.

Given the corruption we're already seeing, I'd support Congress prohibiting these types of sports betting sites and the prop bets specifically.

The only reason this stuff gets caught is bc of legal sites. Same as point shaving scandals in the old days. It was always betting irregularities in Nevada that would get people caught.

Well yeah, but the old days didn't have individual player props

Radio guys said Clase is looking down 65 years in prison.

That’s the max if you stack all the charges consecutive, which basically never happens.

On the other hand he’ll prob get more than the vast majority of people who ripped off a similar amount of $ cause of the celeb angle.

Woot! That's better than the Leafs are doing right now! They have been deflated ever since the Jays lost.

In the '68 Series that somebody on another site was knocking him for losing, he pitched a shutout in Game 1, homered and won Game 4 10-1, then had a shutout going in Game 7 in the 7th before the famous Flood play. So he had 24 innings and 1 run allowed. So that kind of means in one at bat of his he produced as many runs as the Tigers bats against him in 24 innings, lol.

It was maybe the greatest pitching performance in the history of the World Series. This after doing virtually the same thing the year before: one run total allowed in the first two games, a 2-1 and 6-0 win, so his first 22 innings there allowed 1 run.

These were my first two World Series. Watching it was akin to watching Jordan later, I don't know what else to compare it to. It was trying to super peak there in Game 7 of '68, but it was a little like maybe the Warriors team with 72 win season and up 3-1 in the Finals, and a funny thing happened to not allow the fairy tale. Heady stuff.

His defense is that phone calls regarding cock fighting were misinterpreted by the FBI to be baseball information.

I will fall off my log backwards if Clase is sentenced to 65 years in prison. But a lifetime ban from the MLB and some jail time is probably inevitable.

SKUBZ loves it there too

All Hail!

Unpredictable usage for a reliever/closer

Clase appears in only about 70 of 162 games, doesn’t know exactly which games he’ll pitch, and only faces whoever comes up in the 9th inning.

Because of that, it feels unclear how he could reliably give betting information such as balls/strikes for specific batters or pitch sequences.

At best, he could allegedly say something general like, β€œIf I pitch today, first pitch to batter #1 will be a ball, ” but even that seems hard to coordinate.

The amounts mentioned in the indictment seem oddly small

One bettor allegedly placed around $4, 000 worth of wagers.

You pointed out that this feels small for:

a MLB player making millions,

and the alleged involvement of serious criminal groups.

It doesn’t seem to add up if the goal was large-scale profit.

Sportsbooks aggressively limit winners on prop bets

You mentioned that U.S. sportsbooks quickly flag any account that wins consistently, especially on props.

Prop markets are notoriously low-limit, so books wouldn’t allow someone to β€œprint money.”

In your view, it’s hard to imagine a bettor continually winning off predictable props without the account being shut down or heavily restricted.

If the allegations were true, motives might be personal rather than financial

You speculated that:

maybe Clase wouldn’t want to give people actual money,

so helping someone win bets could be a way to β€œhelp” without dipping into his wallet.

You also mentioned the possibility of a person involved having gambling debts or other pressures.

But again, all speculative.

Sustained cheating would require spreading bets across many sportsbooks

Because any sportsbook with an β€œinkling of an edge” shuts down winners,

the alleged bettors would need multiple accounts/books just to avoid detection.

That makes it even more complicated and unlikely on a large scale.

Your conclusion

You think the situation has a lot of logistical holes, and although anything is possible, the specific allegations (if taken literally) don’t entirely make sense from a practical or bookmaker-operations standpoint.

And, as you emphasized:
Everyone is innocent until proven guilty β€” in this case and all cases.

I missed this paragraph

"According to prosecutors, the two accepted thousands of dollars in bribes to help two unnamed gamblers in their native Dominican Republic win at least $460, 000 on bets placed on the speed and outcome of their pitches."

sounds like they were just being incredibly stupid trying to "help out" friends/family in their circles back home. granted it's two players over a span of two seasons. Did they split 3-4k? lol...it's wrong but jail time seems harsh.

Somehow never saw this Koufax retirement presser. He looks so like Rod Serling.

Who the beep is Dylan Cease and why are we giving him $210 million?

Who the beep is Dylan Cease and why are we giving him $210 million?

Because he is good, very good, and because the Yankees and Red Sox are saying WTF with the Jays. This, rather than past years when we just watched AL East teams spend big money while we didn't.

Also, I wanted the Jays to pay Bo rather than go for Tucker. This signing make Tucker less likely and thus Bo more likely.

If we sign Bo and get one more solid reliever, I am really liking 2026!!!

Big thing is the first 4 can all handle innings...

Very good at what besides getting one over on Toronto?

I predict Red Sox will sign Pete Alonso with the quickness.

And as a Mets fan idgaf, because we’re gonna sign up for endless SCHWARBOMBS!

Kyle Tucker sighting in Jays land!

Edwin Diaz is on the Doyerz
Nimmo got traded, perhaps my favorite Met out side of Lindor, because Uncle Steve became a penny pincher.

maybe I'll just be a Yankees fan now.

The NY radio right now is great re: Mets

And now they let the Polar Bear walk away. Unclear what their strat may be for this year (assume they have one?)

rumor mill says Mets could trade for Skubal AND Tatis.

I guess I'd still be a fan then.
